Smith was drafted by the Cardinals in St. Louis in the third round of the 1985 draft.

He started five games his rookie year, but then became a rock at right guard. From 1986 to 1993, he played in all but two games. He played in and started every game for the first six seasons the Cardinals were in Arizona.

He never made a Pro Bowl, but he was always on the field. He wasn’t great, but he was good enough to start for 11 years in the NFL.

The Cardinals did not re-sign him after 1993 when Buddy Ryan was hired as coach. He went on to start three more seasons with the New York Giants.
