Etymology of Aira:
Gk. aira = an ancient Greek name for a weed; probably referring to a different European grass, Lolium temulentum, known as poison darnell.
Etymology of cupaniana:
From the Latin ‘cupani’ / ‘cupa?’ meaning ‘cask?’; and the Latin ‘iana’ / ‘ianus’ meaning ‘adjectival suffix’.
