Etymology of Haplocarpha:
Gk. haplo- = simple, single; karphos = chaff, any small dry body. The pappus is uniseriate. William Henry Harvey (Flora Capensis) states that the name is from apolos = soft; karphos = a scale, again referring to the pappus.
