Florida's lovebug season lasts about four weeks in April through May and then again in August through September.

An inventor in Hobe Sound told CBS12 News he thinks he created a decent defense against the bugs.

Frank Sheldon's spray is called Bug Shield On Demand, which creates a coating on your car, so when the lovebugs stick to your car, all you'll need to remove them is water.

Lovebugs are small black flies with a dull, somewhat velvety appearance with a red head. According to the University of Florida's study of the bugs, the males are especially a nuisance to drivers because the flies are attracted to highways and spatter on the hood and windshield of vehicles. They can also reduce visibility, and etch automobile paint as the body fluids are slightly acidic.
