The native range of this species is Mexico (Chiapas) to Tropical America. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is has environmental uses, as a medicine and for food.

Belize, Bolivia, Brazil North, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico Southeast, Nicaragua, Panamá, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad-Tobago, Venezuela, Windward Is.
