| Description |
basin whitecup spring parsley, Cymopterus purpurascens (=Vesper purpurascens), California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 2073 m (6800 ft). This member of the Carrot Family is found through most of the southern and eastern Great Basin, northern Mojave Desert, and Colorado Plateau regions of western North America. It has a preference for clay-rich soils in the sagebrush and pinyon-juniper zones below about 2300 meters (7500 feet) elevation. This and five other species of Cymopterus have recently been segregated as the genus Vesper, characterized by the broad papery bracts subtending (and initially surrounding in bud) the inflorescence, and grayish-green glaucous leaves with relatively broad and thick segments. |
