Summary[edit]

Medieval heraldic stud: 'gules a water-bouget or'

Title
Medieval heraldic stud: 'gules a water-bouget or'
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy, enamelled heraldic harness mount with traces of gilding surviving, 'gules a water-bouget or'.

It is shield shaped, measuring 17.5x14.2mm with an integral rivet 4mm in diameter 8mm long. The shield depicts a gold water-bouget, a leather water bag (the heraldic design shows two bags and a wooden yoke for carrying them), on a red background. It weighs 4.14g.

Three water-bougets in various colours were the arms of the various branches of the ROOS family, most of whom lived in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. John Roos of Youlton (around 20 miles NW of York) and Sir Richard Roos, are both recorded with 'gules 3 water-bougets or', c.1345.

Nick Griffiths comments, "These little studs are the type used on stirrups (see Griffiths, N; 1989, Finds Research Group 1700-1700 Datasheet 12a, fig.4a & b). The heraldry on these little studs is often abbreviated because of the limited space, so I'm sure the stud belongs to the Roos family of Youlton".
