Description

Rhizocarpon eupetraeum (Nyl.) Arnold, 1870

Photograph of an ascus from Rhizocarpon eupetraeum taken through a compound microscope (x1000), showing 8 immature spores per ascus.

This specimen of R. eupetraeum was growing on rock along the trail up Black Mountain, just S of Tunk Lake, NE of Ellsworth, in Hancock County, Maine, USA (44o35' N,   68o06' W,   elevation 200 meters).

Collected and identified by E.C. Uebel (No. U-533, 11 Jul 2005).
