Summary[edit]

Description Introduced, warm-season, annual or short-lived, erect herb to 80 cm tall. Leaves are to 7 cm long and diamond-shaped, with entire or shallowly toothed margins. Flowerheads are subumbellate, with 4-12 white with yellow centred flowers 4-12 mm across. Berries are initially green, becoming dull black at maturity. Flowering is in spring. Common in a range of habitats, including roadsides, wasteland, horticultural crops and near habitation. Prefers moister habitats. Seeds are spread by birds and water. Can be very competitive in crops and may contaminate harvests. Contains toxic glycol-alkaloids at certain stages of growth (e.g. green berries), although stock poisoning is rare - more common in children. A number of control methods are available: physical removal is effective for small infestations; mulching can prevent seed germination; cultivation can disturb root systems; and registered herbicides are available for larger infestations.
