OUR CARCI NO LOGICAL FRIENDS. 95 A common object—indeed, one of the commonestobjects of the sands—is the cylindrical mole crabor * sand-bug {Hippa emerita),whose vertical burrows openup in great number, partic-ularly in the lower tidal re-gion. The animal is a remark-ably rapid burrower, pushingitself head downward by meansof its anterior or thoracic feet.As a rule, but little organicmatter is found within the ali-mentary canal of the mole crab, which appears to subsist largelyupon the nutriment extracted from the swallowedsand. It constitutes a favorite article of food withmany fishes.
