| Description |
Thomas Heeney was born in Gisborne, New Zealand on 18 May 1898. He was commonly known as Tommy gun Heeney and was a professional heavyweight boxer for New Zealand. He challenged the champion Gene Tunney for the heavyweight championship of the World in New York City on 26 July 1928. Although unsuccessful in his challenge he remains the only New Zealand born heavyweight to fight for the world title. Heeny died in Miami, Florida on 15 June 1984.
