Gymnotidae - Gymnotus esmeraldas Albert and Crampton, 2003



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: New species described by Albert and Crampton (2003) from western Ecuador.
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Albert, J.S., and W.G.R. Crampton. 2003. Seven new species of the Neotropical electric fish Gymnotus (Teleostei, Gymnotiformes) with a redescription of G. carapo (Linnaeus). Zootaxa 287:1-54.
TYPE SPECIMENS: Holotype: MCZ-58729 (Museum of Comparative Zoology, Rio Esmeraldas drainage); Paratypes MCZ-162745 (Rio Esmeraldas, collected with holotype).
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2012). Appears most similar to G. henni from the Rio Calima on the Pacific slope of Colombia (Albert and Crampton, 2003).
RANGE ECUADOR: Known from Rio Esmeraldas and upper Rio Guayas (Rio Palenque) river basins (Albert and Crampton, 2003).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: None.
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR: MCZ-58729, MCZ-162745, CAS 164103 (California Academy of Sciences), FMNH-92041 (Field Museum of Natural History).
MAXIMUM SIZE: Grows to at least 309 mm.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Elongate fish generally resembling other gymnotids in the area. Lower jaw strongly projecting beyond snout and curved upward (see figure above). Can be distinguished from related species by the lack of alternating light and dark pigment bands on the anterior 80% of the body. Specimen in type series from Rio Esmeraldas possess a uniquley speckled color pattern composed of pale yellow or cream-colored patches interspersed on a dark brown ground color over most body and anal fin surfaces. Specimens from Guayas basin are uniformly dark brown (without speckles or reticulated pattern (Albert and Crampton, 2003).
