Mashed turnips are a creamy, delicious, low-carb alternative to mashed potatoes. They’re a snap to make and a great addition to any holiday or weeknight meal. Try my recipe. I think you’re going to love it!

Yield: 3 1/2 cups

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. (907.18g) turnips
  • 2 tbsp. (28g) unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 oz. (42.53g) cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup (59.5g) heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 tsp. (3g) salt
  • 1/8 tsp. (0.29g) ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp. (1.98g) green onion tops, chopped

Directions:

  1. Wash, peel, and remove the hard ends of the turnips.
  2. Cut the turnips into cubes. Place them into a four-quart pot, cover them with water, and boil them for about 20 minutes or so until they are tender.
  3. Drain the water from the turnips using a colander placed in a clean sink.
  4. Add the butter, cream cheese, heavy cream, and the turnips back into the hot pan. Use a potato masher to mash the turnips into the desired consistency. I like mine to have a little texture. If you enjoy a smoother mashed turnip, use an immersion blender or put the mixture into the food processor.
  5. Add the salt and pepper. Mix well.
  6. Place into a serving dish and top with the green onion.
  7. Enjoy!
