It’s the first Wednesday of the year and, of course, Decider is going to start it off right. This Woman Crush Wednesday we’re honoring an incredible talent who deserves ALL the praise in the world. Let’s give it up for our first WCW of 2019, Jessica Barden!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Jessica Barden

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Jessica Barden first came into our lives way before we even realized how much we needed her. She starred in The End of the F***ing World, Netflix’s British dark comedy series, and we just knew she was destined for greatness. Now flash forward a year later and Barden is still on our radar. Why, you ask? Because she’s freaking amazing, that’s why! We can’t imagine anyone better to make us laugh at the dark comedic moments in TEOTFW or her newest film The New RomanticBut one of her best skills, besides making us laugh our asses off, is at the same time being one of the most relatable characters on screen. I, for one, cannot relate to being an actual sugar baby like Blake in The New Romantic, but as I watched Barden deliver her lines I couldn’t help but think “wow, same” every single time. Talk about a BIG mood.

2018 was a great year for Barden with the blow up of TEOTFW along with all of her other outstanding projects, but we have a feeling that 2019 will be even better.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: You probably recognize Barden because just about a year ago she captured all of our hearts in the British dark comedy, The End of the F***ing World. The Netflix series follows James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Barden) in their escape from their unfulfilling home lives. Barden’s character Alyssa is a wild and rebellious teenager with an even more ferocious vocabulary. Barden also appears in A24’s absurdist black-comedy, The Lobster (now on Netflix). Barden also is known for her recurring role as Justine in the British drama Penny DreadfulIn 2018, Barden also starred in The New Romantic, a movie revolves around soon-to-be college graduate Blake, who experiments with being a sugar baby in hopes of using her experience to win a journalism competition. This past Christmas, Barden also shared her latest project with the world, Earthy Encounters. The short film is an homage to Steven Spielberg’s 80’s films, and Barden claims it’s one of her “favorite jobs ever.”

But if you haven’t been granted the privilege of watching this star shine yet, you totally can now: all of these options are currently available to stream online.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: If you’re like me and need to fully immerse yourself in all that is Jessica Barden, then you’re in luck. Our girl has two upcoming projects this year. The first is a film called Jungleland, which started filming late August 2018. The film follows a bare-knuckle boxer and his brother as they travel around the country for one last fight. Barden’s character tags along and “exposes the cracks” in the brothers’ relationship throughout the journey. Barden will also be starring in Lambs of God, a four-part Gothic drama about three nuns who must defend themselves and their rundown monastery from being sold.
