Did you know that goats don’t have teeth on the top? Meg’s sleepy yawn illustrates that she has only a hard gummy plate that is perfect for grinding cud.
They do have a healthy set of sharp teeth on the bottom for cutting grass and weeds and shrubs and your favorite flowers.
Dolly is famous for her toothy grin around here, but today when I want to take her picture, what do I get?
That’s not very nice. No worries–bring out the peanuts, and that will get them to open up for a picture!
Thanks, Muffin.
EDIT: Goats do have both top and bottom teeth in the back. They are very sharp and hurt if you get bit, so don’t stick your fingers in their mouths to check this out.
Visit Jan at Murrieta 365 for more photography that is SOOC.
those are the cutest goat pictures I’ve ever seen!
Thanks! I give credit to the cute subjects.
I did NOT know that, it’s good to learn something new. This is mine, for today. These are are wonderful shots.
Thanks for stopping. The goats are always ready to pose for a picture (or yawn and not realize I’m taking their picture)!
Isobelle said I’d better never put a photograph of her doing a yawn like Meg’s! What a sleepy face!!! Adorable!
I figure it’s end of the pregnancy tiredness. I can only imagine how Isobelle reacted to such a picture!
Nope, did not know that, how interesting. Are there any other animals that are like this?
Pretty common with ruminants. I know it’s also true for cows.
That really is a funny yawning photo. Do they eat all of the peanut?
They eat the whole peanut, and a couple would take the finger if you’re not careful! 🙂
For as many “bites” my goats have given me I should have know this, great informational post!
Glad you enjoyed. As much as it hurts when they do chomp, you’d think they had teeth on top and bottom.
So they can chew with only bottom teeth? Cute goat! Friendly, too.
They chew (bottom teeth to cut plants) and swallow a lot of food. Then they regurgitate and grind this cud with the gums on top. Then they swallow again. This is typical of all ruminants.
Wow! Learned something new! Thank you!
I try to do my part to raise the world’s knowledge of goats! LOL
love this teresa! had no clue! your goaties are so adorable!
Thank you so much. They are usually the perfect models!
Very fun! The babies were sucking on my fingers this morning. I could feel the bottom teeth, but had no idea they would never have top choppers. I enjoyed the earlier post on signs of kidding. Saw all sorts of that today as well. Guess it’ll be our turn next year.
Glad you enjoyed. They are so fun when they are little like that.
Oh that is interesting shot.. happy SSS!
Thanks for stopping by!
oh my gosh, these photos are awesome! I love these goats.
They are so sweet…. 🙂
They really are sweet! So glad you enjoyed your stop.
You mean they might eat my FLOWERS ?! 🙂
Flowers, rose bushes, fruit trees. Good fences make for happy goat owners.
O.K. She is a cutie-pie. I use all kinds of goats milk soaps and other products. I get them at Jenness Farm in Nottingham, N.H. I love them.
They are wonderful.
Small correction, yes they don’t have upper incisors (front teeth) but they do have upper and lower premolars and molars for chewing and grinding. Love the pictures.
Thank you so much.
Our girls grin like monkeys – they are so expressive. Love your photos today!
Thanks. It’s amazing how goats really do smile.
Great post – raising goat awareness one post at a time :). I’ve found that roses are everybody’s favorite food. I really enjoy your blog!
Glad you enjoyed. I do have a rose bush they try to prune as often as they can. It’s always a race to save it.
I didn’t know that goat has no teeth on the top, so thank you..Gorgeous pictures of your goats!
Please note I was corrected -they do have top back teeth.
Super cute!
So glad you stopped by.
and those bottom teeth are sharp if you happen to get your finger between them and that upper gummer ROFL
Yes, they are. Maybe you’ve had a goat trying to eat something that needed removed from his/her mouth? That’s usually when I get it.
Well Hi Teresa. I am learning so much on these Farm Friend Fridays. I had no idea that goats didn’t have any upper teeth! And those pics are adorable.
Cindy Bee
It has been a very fun learing thing I agree.
And thank goodness for gumming! 🙂
They seem to eat well with the teeth they do have.
These are great! I did know that about the goats but I had forgotten. 🙂
Thanks so much!
