Three to See Edmonton Events: Hotel Mira, Tim Rechner artist talk and Clash of the Titans

Article content

Hotel Mira: Vancouver alt-rock chart-toppers Hotel Mira had two radio hits last year with Fever Pitch and Dancing with the Moonlight off their latest record I Am Not Myself, which dealt with mental-health awareness — an important topic this and indeed all weeks. Celebrating a new single and a glitzy/sleazy new video for Alone in America, the Sunday night concert is right in the middle of their extensive Canadian tour, and if you’re up in Grande Prairie Saturday, you can catch singer Charlie Kerr and the rest of the band at Better Than Fred’s. Fake Shark opens both shows with Roll the Bones joining in Edmonton.

Silence Like a Vacuum: Besides drumming in Electricity for Everybody!‘s 9 p.m. Saturday slot at Soho (11454 Jasper Ave.) opening for Miesha & the Spanks at Winterruption, local artist Tim Rechner is also having a reception and talk for his ongoing painting show at Yardbird Tuesday. “I am making the best paintings of my life at this very moment,” Rechner declares. And indeed, his quasi-linguistic, abstract-expressionist creations never seems to stop whirling like beautiful monsters into interesting realms.

Clash of the Titans (1981): While suffering from a serious early-’80s stiffness in several of its wiggly arms, this Harry Hamlin-starring action fantasy is still a wonder to behold. Following big-haired Perseus as he road-movies through his tricky odyssey encountering giant scorpions, the skeletal River Styx ferryman and Medusa as a warmup for the simean Kraken, the film showcases the final work of stop-motion animation master Ray Harryhausen — chef’s kiss! Helmet and sandals optional.
