The kilogram is the basic unit of mass in the International System of Units. It is defined as being equal to the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram. The kilogram is the only basic SI unit with a multiple in its name. It is also the only basic SI unit that is always directly defined by a physical object rather than a fundamental physical property that can be reproduced in different laboratories. Four of the seven basic units of the international system are defined in relation to the kilogram and its stability is therefore important. The gram is originally defined in 1795 as the mass of one cubic centimeter of water at 4 ° C, making the kilogram the equal of the mass of a liter of water.
