VL Pyörremyrsky: Suomen Wild Wind.

This beautiful Finn “creature” was designed and built with two main purposes in mind: to palliate the Bf 109’s main drawbacks (above all its flimsy undercarriage) and to achieve some self-sufficiency. The Pyörremyrsky (Hurricane) employed the prop and DB 605 engine of the Bf 109G matted to an airframe mainly built in the material more available in the land of 1000 lakes: wood. The prototype PM-1 turned out to be not only a beauty, but a capable and very manoeuverable aircraft. All weren’t roses though. Problems with the glue used in its construction and the decline of interest due to the end of WW2 left this promising aircraft future reduced to being an unique prototype.
Gladly, the PM-1 is preserved in mint condition at the Aviation Museum of Central Finland, Tikkakoski.
