5.5 Inch Howitzer

The 5.5 Inch Howitzer MK III entered service with the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1941. During World War II, Canada equipped half of the Medium Regiments with the 5.5 Inch Howitzer and the other half with the 4.5 Inch Howitzer. A Medium Regiment was at full strength with 16 guns.

During World War II, the Canadian Army had two centralized Army Groups, each with three Medium Regiments. These six Medium Regiments served in England, Italy, and Northwest Europe.

Canada used the 5.5 Inch Howitzer to conduct long-range fire and counter-battery bombardment. The 5.5 Inch Howitzer remained in Canadian service until 1956 when the M1A1 155mm Howitzer replaced it.
