From French bouillon (“broth”), of both bouillir (“to boil”), from Middle French bouillir (“to boil”), from Old French boillir, alternative form of bolir (“to boil”), from Latin bullīre, present active infinitive of bulliō (“I bubble, boil”), from Proto-Indo-European *bew- (“swelling”), and with the suffix -on, from Old French -on, from both Latin -ōnem, Frankish *-on, *-in, and Proto-West Germanic *-ing.
