Martin Joseph Gately, a long time Manhasset resident, passed at St. Francis Hospital on October 9, 2023. He was comforted by loved ones.

“Big Mart”, as he was known, was born November 23, 1941, to Mary Patricia and Martin Gately. He was raised in Manhasset and graduated from St. Mary’s High School and Fordham University. In 1969, Marty married Mary Ellen Moran, also of Manhasset. They were married for 50 years before her passing in 2019. Mary Ellen and Marty lived in Plandome and had four children who all graduated from Manhasset High School. For decades Marty worked in the financial industry. He was a long-time member at Plandome Country Club and was considered an honest golfer. He is fondly remembered for his big heart and generosity. Marty was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s RC Church.

In addition to his parents, and wife Mary Ellen, Marty was preceded in death by his brother Kevin Gately.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Megan Trotta (Marzio), Patrick Gately, Kelly Gersen (Ted), and Sean Gately (Tara Hines), his thirteen Grandchildren: Brigid, Kelly, Erin, Brendan, Jack, Molly, Teddy, Patrick, Ryan, Connor, Colin, Kiera and Caroline, his brothers Michael and Timmy Gately and sisters Rosemary O’Neill and Tricia Rowe.
