El Callejon Taqueria – Santa Fe

El Callejon Taqueria

I really love the Old Towne Santa Fe Area. In a recent visit I was looking for a spot to eat and everything on the main plaza was a little bit too crowded. I walked a little further down the road and found a door that I knew I had to walk through. That door belonged to El Callejon Taqueria!

For those that know this blog, you know I love the small and out of the way places that some people might miss. Well about halfway down Galisteo Street I found that “hole in the wall” and didn’t hesitate to find my way to a spot at the very crowded bar.

The Food!

Now to the important part…The Food! El Callejon Taqueria has a full menu for lunch and dinner that focuses on their famous taco line-up. They also have a good assortment of appetizers, tortas calientes (hot sandwiches), and entrees including Fajitas, enchiladas, chili relleno and more. I had to find out what made them famous so went with the Famous Taco Line-Up!

The famous line-up features 9 different tacos that all come with red and green tomatillo salsas + signature spicy guacamole, with an accent of escabeche and side of black beans. The tacos can be mixed and matched for three or you can ala carte order. I decided to get four tacos and went with the barbacoa, carne asada, lechon, and al pastor. A great grouping and I wasn’t dissapointed.

Barbacoa

The Barbacoa taco is tender slow cooked beef that is shredded. It is topped with cilantro and onion. I have to say that this meat was so tender and soft and it just melted in my mouth. It was really good.

Carne Asada

Next up was the Carne Asada. This one is top sirloin marinated in beer, garlic, lime and black pepper. Then it is grilled chopped before being topped with cilantro and onion. I thought the meat here was really flavorful. It was more of a chunked meat than sliced but it was just so flavorful It could have been served anyway and I would have eaten it!

Lechon

The Lechon came highly recommended from my server. It is savory slow cooked pork loin. Chopped and topped with spicy guac and served with escabeche and beans. The recommendations were right! The Lechon had a bit of a citrus flavor too it but the meat was so good. It was melt in the mouth again and really nice and juicy with each bite.

Al Pastor

I finished off with the Al Pastor Taco. This one is “Shepherd style,” marinated pork combined with onion and pineapple – grilled to perfection. Topped with fresh cilantro and onion, served with escabeche and black beans, tomatillo salsas and our signature spicy guacamole. This might have been my favorite of all. Sweeter and really flavorful meat and it was really good.

I also wanted to mention that the guac was creamy with a nice spice to it and it made for a perfect topping for the tacos. I also loved the green sauce that came with the tacos. A great kick and really flavorful. The black beans also had a terrific flavor to them!

Overall, a really amazing experience with some great food and a really fun vibe. If you find yourself in Santa Fe, give El Callejon Taqueria a shot!

Finding El Callejon Taqueria

El Callejon Taqueria is located at 208 Galisteo St just off the main square of Santa Fe Plaza. I was walking and didn’t see any parking directly at the restaurant other than some street parking. There are lots and parking around the area though. El Callejon Taqueria is open Friday – Sunday 11:30 – 9pm and Tuesday – Thursday 11:30 – 2pm for lunch and 4pm – 9pm for dinner. They are closed on Mondays.
