Serratia marcescens culture. Petri dish containing a nutrient medium that has been used to culture the bacterium Serratia marcescens. This is a facultative anaerobic gram-negative rod bacterium. The red pigment it produces has been used in research to track bacterial activity. This bacterium is found in water, soil, animal and plants. The diseases it causes include sepsis, meningitis, urinary tract infections, osteomyelits and endocarditis.
