Description
Dye diffusion in agar. Start of an experiment with methylene blue dye diffusing through agar gel in a test tube. The dye was placed in a thin layer half way down the tube. A week later (see C011/4557) the dye had spread upwards and downwards. The movement of the dye through the agar is an example of diffusion, where the thermal energy of the dye molecules causes them to move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. The rate of diffusion depends upon the substance, the medium in which it is moving, and the temperature.
