Hypericum patulum, commonly known as Goldencup St. John's wort, is a perennial flowering plant species in the Hypericaceae family. It is native to eastern Asia, including regions like Japan, China, Korea, and eastern Russia. The plant is known for its vibrant yellow flowers and has been cultivated as an ornamental garden plant in various parts of the world.

Here are some key characteristics of Hypericum patulum:

Habitat: Hypericum patulum typically grows in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, grasslands, and along forest edges. It tends to prefer moist, well-drained soils.

Appearance: The plant features opposite, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green and can have a glossy appearance. The flowers are bright yellow and have five petals, giving them a distinctive appearance. These flowers often have numerous stamens with prominent yellow anthers.

Blooming: Hypericum patulum typically blooms in late spring to early summer, producing a profusion of yellow flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Cultivation: It is sometimes grown as an ornamental shrub in gardens and landscaping due to its attractive flowers and foliage.

Growing Instructions

Stratification (Cold Treatment): Hypericum patulum seeds often benefit from a period of cold stratification, which helps to break seed dormancy and improve germination rates. Place the cleaned seeds in a sealed plastic bag with a damp paper towel or vermiculite. Store the bag in the refrigerator for about 4-6 weeks.

Sowing: After the stratification period, it's time to sow the seeds. Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them down. Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they require light to germinate.

Germination: Place the seed trays or pots in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can take several weeks, so be patient and monitor the trays regularly.

Transplanting: Once the seedlings have grown large enough to handle, typically with a few sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the garden. Choose a location with well-draining soil and good sunlight exposure.

Outdoor Planting: If you're transplanting the seedlings outdoors, space them according to the mature size of Hypericum patulum plants, which can be around 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) apart. Water the seedlings well after planting and continue to water them as needed to establish their root systems.
