RAY ALANVentriloquist Ray Alan, who found fame with his puppet Lord Charles, has died aged 79.
He was best known for his on-stage partnership with the upper class Lord Charles and also Tich and Quackers, the stars of a children's television programme about a young boy's ventriloquist dummies.
Ray was a regular face on television from the 1950s up until variety faded from our screens in the 1980s.
After that he made a living from entertaining on cruise liners.
He and Lord Charles - the puppet whose catchphrase was "you silly arse" - made their TV debut on the nostalgic variety show The Good Old Days.
In 2006, he said of Lord Charles: "Oh, no, I'm not one of those ventriloquists who thinks he's real. When I finish my work I put it back in the tool box and I don't take it out again until the next job."
Born on September 18, 1930, at 13 he became a call-boy at the Lewisham Hippodrome Theatre, where he started to do magic sets on stage between acts.
He toured in cabaret all over the world and performed with Laurel and Hardy in 1954. By 2008, he took a break from the stage due to failing health, and died suddenly but peacefully on 24 May, 2010.

Even today, at the age of 73, I can clearly remember Ray Allen in a regular 5-minute TV spot with his dummy "Micky the Martian", which I found gently superb. I can remember his first appearance on "Tho Good Old Days" too. Along with Terry Hall & Lenny, Peter Brough & Archie, Arthur Worsely & Charlie Brown, Saveen & Psyche, there's almost nothing left in our electronic age of this wonderful, skillful and thoroughly entertaining theatrical art form. I salute you, Ray Allen, for brightening the days of my life.

Like countless others of my age (50+), I have nothing but fond memories of Ray and Lord Charles. Not alone was Ray technically superb - perhaps even more importantly the humour itself was always spot-on. And, of course, Ray himself was a genuinely nice person. So Ray (and Lord Charles) - thank you for all the laughter, the joy and the memories. RIP, You Silly Ass!
