Anamorph: Phomopsis ligulata Grove (1935). Conidiogenous cells 10-15 x 1 µm. Alpha-conidia 6-8 x 2-2.5; beta-conidia 10-21 x 1 µm.
Teleomorph: stromata on host surface as pustulate blackened ruptures through which the ostioles are erumpent, surface of bark blackened over wide areas and often exposed by loosening of the periderm, dorsal zone along bark surface, ventral zone in wood. Ascomata irregularly scattered, ostioles elongate and erumpent singly or in small groups. Ascospores 11-14 x 2.5-4 µm.
Wehmeyer considered this to belong within the D. eres aggregate.
