Family: PhomatosporaceaeGenus: Phomatospora
SUMMARY
Anamorph: Sporothrix-like (Rappaz 1992)
Teleomorph: stromata absent; ascomata are sometimes associated with surface blackening of the substratum, but it is not clear whether this is caused by the fungus. Ascomata 300-400 µm diam., scattered or in small clusters and then sometimes emerging through common fissures in the epidermis, ± globose with a short and sometimes eccentric neck 100-150 µm tall and 70-100 µm diam. at the base. Peridium thin-walled, composed of several layers of dark brown thin-walled angular cells 7-10 µm diam., the inner layers less strongly pigmented, the cells becoming somewhat elongated in the neck region. Interascal tissue of very thin-walled and sometimes evanescent unbranched paraphyses 2.5-3 µm in diam. Asci 60-90 x 3.5-4.5 µm, cylindrical with a long tapering stalk, the apex obtuse to truncate, thin-walled and not fissitunicate, with a refractive J- apical ring ca 2 µm diam. and 1 µm thick, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged uniseriately, (7.5-) 8-9.5 x 3-3.5 µm, ellipsoidal to cylindric-ellipsoidal, thin-walled, hyaline, aseptate, minutely striate, often biguttulate, sometimes with a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
The species may well prove to be an aggregate.
