Common in the southeast US in dry, rocky and acidic woods, Deerberry is a deciduous shrub that grows 2 to 15 feet tall. Small showy white bell-shaped flowers appear in late spring and are followed by fall berries that range in color from yellow-green to pink-purple to dark blue. Fall leaf color ranges from yellow to pale red The bark of mature stems is attractively striped. A highly variable species, forms can be short and spreading or narrow and tall. Deerberry is a good choice for a shady, dry, acidic place.
