This less popular Fritillaria species belongs to a group of true garden extravaganza. Hermonian fritillary is a low growing bulbous plant that develops subtle leaves that take on an intriguing, pistachio-green colour. This plant fits into contrasting arrangements on border edges. It blooms late in spring, displaying small clusters of bell-shaped flowers. A larger flower bed of these plants would attract attention of many garden guests.

Fritillaria hermonis ssp. amana grows up to 20 cm tall. Slender stems are covered with narrow, spiky, sharp-pointed leaves. The stalk branches out at the top part and that is where the blooms appear. The cup-shaped flowers take on similar colouring to the stems. There is a fuzzy crimson pattern on the yellow-green background. This chequered design is characteristic for this species. Plain petals, arranged alternately with the chequered ones create a splendid, eye-catching composition. There are 3 to 4 blooms gathered on each stem. This plant looks subtle, yet thanks to the bright colouring does not disappear on the garden background.

This fritillary would grow best on a moderately fertile soil that does not waterlog. It prefers well lit, sunny sites. It does not require excavating that should even be avoided. It should grow in the same location for at least several years.

Due to its relatively small size, this species is intended for growing in front of the sunny borders. It may turn into an attractive, seasonal edging, too. It forms especially fitting partnerships with the differently coloured alumroots. It would diversify the rock garden landscape and its crawling plants.
