In the world we live in today, there are several products that are made by children in factories that might be working 10 or more hours a day. These kids start to work from as young as 5 to 17.

Electronics

  • Apple and Samsung

  • Ages 13-15

  • Choice is between factories and school

  • Student “apprenticeships”

  • Long hours with very little pay

Clothing

Cotton:

  • Children collect cotton in fields

  • 40,000 to 1 million students are used for the annual harvest

  • Starting at 8 years young

  • Barely paid

    • Money goes toward meals, transportation, and payments to the school

  • Fined for not collecting a certain amount of cotton

  • Must work right in order to move to the next grade

Cocoa

  • Mars, Nestle, and Hershey's

Toys

  • Ages 13-16

  • Guangdong, China

  • Sent through “work-study programs”

  • Long hours under the threat of financial penalty and being fined for any mistakes according to the Department of Labor

  • Withhold wages for months sometimes to assure that children will not leave

Coal and Bricks


  • Kids are used to carry heavy weights

  • Ages 8-17 are forced to produce bricks

  • Without pay and under the threat of physical violence

  • Children are used in coal mines for their size and less pay

Eyeshadow

  • Work in mines to collect Mica for the makeup

  • Mica: makes it shiny
