Glen Affric = Early Start!

I am hoping to go to Glen Affric today but the forecast is a bit different so will see what happens out with some friends and hoping to enjoy the day. I love  Glen Affric it is a glen south-west of the village of Cannich in the Highland region of Scotland, some 15 miles to the west of Loch Ness. The River Affric runs along its length, passing through Loch Affric and Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin.

Glen Affric

Glen Affric – One of the most beautiful glens in Scotland!

Despite the decline in the woodland, Glen Affric is still home to one of the largest remnants of the ancient Caledonian Pine Forest that once covered much of the Highlands. Recognising the importance of Glen Affric to the nation, the Forestry Commission purchased a large part of the Glen in 1951 – the remainder being part of a number of sporting estates or in the care of the National Trust for Scotland (NTS). In the early days restoration work was undertaken directly by the Forestry Commission. This area has some marvellous big hills and is a superb place to be especially in the winter.

The photo is of Ted Atkins who led our expedition to Everest in 2001 . What a guy but the photo shows him two days after climbing Lhotse, The 4th highest mountain in the world and about to set off for the Everest marathon, he has completed the marathon!

  1. I was lucky enough to get a chance to spend an Easter break a couple of years ago walking in and around Glen Affric. It is a wonderful place. I hadn’t realised then it was part of an ancient forest – I can appreciate it even more now.

Great area – no one else about heavy snow only did a wee hill but a grand day in full winter conditions, on the blog tomorrow. Hundreds of deer about though.
