According to Klyn Nursery, “An interesting and unique tree that could definitely be used more in the landscape due to their hardy nature and multi-season interest. Hailing from eastern Asia, Koelreuteria paniculata bears elegant pinnately compound leaves, giving it an almost feathery appearance as they catch in the breeze. Come July it becomes covered in bright yellow flowers, clustered together in upright panicles reaching 12-15″ in length. As the flowers fall they have been said to resemble golden rain and over time form a charming golden carpet around the base. By fall, these golden flowers have given way to papery seed pods that resemble Chinese lanterns. Aside from its fascinating ornamental features, the Golden Rain Tree does well under a wide range of conditions including drought, heat, clay soils, and air pollution although it will give the best performance in well-drained soils in full sun.
