Courage the Cowardly Dog is celebrating its 28th anniversary — the animated show made its debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. as a short on February 18, 1996. In commemoration of this milestone, creator John R. Dilworth has released the pilot episode of the show, which was also nominated for the Oscars.

It’s titled The Chicken From Outer Space, and it is this very short that was greenlit to become the now-classic series, which would end up premiering on Cartoon Network on November 12, 1999. The pilot of Courage the Cowardly Dog is available to watch on YouTube for free. It shows a glimpse into the early design and direction of the series looked like, until it went through changes to become the beloved show we know today. You can check out the pilot below:

Courage the Cowardly Dog was undeniably a success, running for four seasons with a total of 52 episodes. The titular character, Courage, is a dog living in the middle of a fictional town of Nowhere, Kansas. He is adopted by Muriel Bagge, a caring woman, and Eustace Bagge, a grumpy man who is jealous of Courage. The show follows the adventures of Courage as he frequently encounters various creatures such as monsters, aliens, and more.
