Uncaria Tomentosa Extract is an active ingredient obtained from the bark of the tropical woody vine called Cat's Claw, a species of Uncaria found in South America. It is found across the entire Amazonian region from Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, through Columbia, Ecuador, Surinam, and Guyana, and all the way to Panama and Puerto Rico.

The main action of extracts from the root and stem of Uncaria tomentosa aims at the immune system. Various studies demonstrate effects comparable to immunostimulants. There are also reports in the literature of anti-inflammatory action. So far, more than 50 components in Cat's Claw have been identified.

There are three main components responsible for the actions of Uncaria Tomentosa Extract:

  • Oxindolic alkaloids
  • Quinovic acid glycosides
  • Polyhydroxilates, triterpenes.

The synergetic combination of all these components makes the Cat's Claw extract so effective. The indigenous people of South America have presumably known of Cat's Claw's unique properties for over two thousand years. Above all, it is used in Peru's rainforest to promote health. Healing and health tonics are prepared from the inner bark of this liana species.

There are many studies to be found in the literature on the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of Uncaria Tomentosa Extract. Incorporated in skin care applications, it soothes sensitive skin, relieves irritation, and fights against free radicals and oxidative stress.
