    Morphology
    Shrubs, up to 1.5 m tall; branches terete. Leaves simple, opposite, decussate; petioles ca. 0.5-5 cm long; lamina ca. 12-25 x 3-5 cm, elliptic to ovate-lanceolate or broadly lanceolate, rounded or subcordate at base, acuminate at apex, entire, membranous, bristly along nerves beneath, obscurely serrate; secondary nerves 7 pairs. Inflorescences terminal, a cymose panicle, 20-30 × 10 cm, furfuraceous stellate, with 2 leaflike bracts at base; bractlets and bracteole ca. 0.1-0.3 cm lanceolate to subulate; hypanthium ca. 8 mm, narrowly funnelform, longitudinally 8-ribbed, with dense stellate trichomes when young; calyx lobes ca. 0.1 cm, shortly triangular-ovate, apex acute and apiculate; petals ca. 0.7 cm, pink, red, or dark red, ovate; longer stamens with connective swollen; shorter with connective shortly spurred. Capsule ca. 0.8 × 0.6 cm; obovoid, hypanthium narrowly funnel form.
