        Description
Range Description: Labeo dussumieri is endemic to southern Kerala and Sri Lanka. In Kerala, it is known from four rivers, Pampa, Achenkovil, Manimala and Meenachil (Kurup 2000), the southern tip of Vembanad Lake (Narayanan et al. 2005; Kurup 2000), and Periyar (Gopalakrishnan et al. 2009). In Sri Lanka they have been recorded from various rivers (Smith 1991) and reservoirs (Amarasinghe and Pitcher 1986, De Silva 1998). Labeo rajasthanicus from Jaisamand Lake in Udaipur has been found to be the same as L. dussumieri and therefore needs to be synonymised (Gopalakrishnan pers. comm.). The record from Alibagh, Maharastra by Jayram (2010) needs verification. The Sri Lankan population needs taxonomic verification as it may be a different species. The populations from different rivers in Kerala were found to be genetically homogeneous (Gopalakrishnan pers. comm.) but the morpho-meristics analysis of populations from different river systems, showed that the populations are different (Kurup and Kuriakose 1996). Countries - Native: India (Kerala)- Present - origin uncertain: Sri Lanka
