Morphology
Shrub or small tree about 10-15 ft tall. Bark grayish brown. Branchlets pilose. Young branchlets stellate-pubescent. Leaves opposite, elliptic-oblong, 6-9 x 2.5-3.5 cm across, subglabrous above and hairy beneath, base acute, except in the basal part of the leaf margin crenate-serrate, apex acuminate, lateral veins 7-10 on either side of the midvein, parallel-veined, veins are more prominent and deep from the dorsal side of the leaf, petiole purplish red, about 0.6-0.9 cm long, stipules absent. Inflorescence cyme on short leafless branchlets, clustered densely, sessile. Flowers white and pink, sessile. Outer bracts ovate about 1.5 cm in diameter, obtuse, inner bracts 0.6-1.5 cm, bracteoles linear. Calyx tube glabrous, teeth small, irregular, often ciliate. Corolla-tube 0.6-0.4 cm long, lobes about 0.3 cm long, truncate to obtuse, corolla white inside, pink outside, glabrous, about 1-1.5 cm long, corolla tube broadly ovate. Stamens 5, attached to the corolla tube, 2 slightly above and 3 slightly lower but all lower than the corolla lobes, anthers yellow, stigma subsessile. Fruit drupe yellow, reddish when ripe, ellipsoid about 0.6-1 cm in diameter, hardly compressed.
