A Message from the Vice Chancellor
Moving Forward Dear Alumni and Friends of Bethlehem University, On September 12th we celebrated the final ceremony for our 40th Anniversary. It brought to a close a year in which we looked back and gratefully remembered the work and dedication of so many people who have enabled Bethlehem University to grow into what it is today. As we look back at the past forty years with pride, our eyes are focused on the next forty years, always looking to find better ways to meet the needs of the Palestinian people. However, even as we celebrated, we were ever conscious of the context in which we exist. What overshadowed so much of what we wanted to celebrate was the concern for our graduates in Gaza along with their families, as well as the innocent people suffering there. As I welcomed new students to Bethlehem University I reminded them of young people their own age in Gaza who do not have the same opportunity they have. I challenged them to take advantage of being at Bethlehem University to really develop into people who will make a difference in Palestine. While aware of that backdrop, Bethlehem University continued to operate fairly much as normal. We began this new academic year with an enrolment of 3249 students across all faculties. In the Masters degree programs, we have accepted 139 postgraduate students for Social Work and Community Services, Tourism Studies, Biotechnology, and Masters in International Cooperation and Development (MICAD). Developments continue in the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism and the recent agreement that has been signed between Bethlehem University and De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, Manila, Philippines, is a wonderful support for Bethlehem University. I remain very proud and grateful that Bethlehem University continues to serve the Palestinian people through education. This will be more evident as plans for the next few years become a reality. Bethlehem University is set to make a significant move to respond even more effectively to the needs of the Palestinian people as we move towards the celebration of our 50th Anniversary. Thanks to all those who have supported us in such a dedicated way over these past forty years. We look forward to working with you during the coming decade as we reach out to the young people of Palestine to provide quality higher education for them. May God Bless You All,

Business Market Preparing Students for the Real Market
Students and staff of the Faculty of Business Administration organized a three day Business Market to practice marketing and sales skills. As their graduation project, senior students presented twenty eight business plans outlining their marketing strategies and product placements, with both the university and local communities in mind. The students presented their products in decorated market booths to attract customers. Elias Mukarker, lecturer at the Faculty of Business Administration and the supervisor of the Business Market explained that this graduation project aimed at providing the students the opportunity to touch base with the real market and to encourage entrepreneurship. The products displayed in the various booths ranged from food and handicrafts to music, books, digital and electronic devices and other general products. The market attracted a good number of customers and resulted in good sales, a sure incentive for entrepreneurship!

Jane, who marketed Easter products said, “I believe the market gave me a sense of what it means to start a business in real life. It was a great challenge and I experienced what working as a business professional could be like.” Dina, whose business plan also focused on local Easter products described the days of preparation and working together with classmates, saying: “The business market has pushed me from theory to practice, it was a wonderful experience to finish my time with here at BU.”
BU Students Abroad Student Exchange with Handong Global University in South Korea Bethlehem University and Handong Global University in South Korea have been working for several years, resulting in a successful student exchange program and educational and research cooperation between the two institutions. Bethlehem University has had the pleasure to receive Korean students on campus several times and has sent its own students to South Korea in return.
Ali commented on the significant cultural differences between South Korea and Palestine but said that these differences have served to enrich his life. “In fact”, he said, “it is especially the differences in culture between South Korea and Palestine that are making my time here exciting and enriching”.
In February 2014, Maram Abu Saada, an accounting student, and Nancy Konkar, an English language and literature student, travelled to South Korea to study at Handong Global University for one year. A year earlier, Ali al Sharif joined the exchange to continue his accounting studies at Handong Global University. While living and studying in South Korea, Maram said that the exchange had been ”a life changing experience” and Nancy learned that “with determination, you can change the world”.

BU students in the USA with the Sir John McGuckin Internship Program This summer, a group of ten BU students had the opportunity to work as interns with Catholic Charities in locations around the USA. The McGuckin Internship program provides students of Bethlehem University with the opportunity to gain valuable career experiences in an international setting. The internship program works closely with Catholic Charities USA, an organization devoted to help people meet their most basic needs and to advocate for social change to reduce poverty. Through their personal contact with communities, families, and individuals in need, Catholic Charities works to build a just and compassionate society. The BU students attended an orientation session at the Catholic Charities offices in Washington, after which the students moved to eight different locations of the Catholic Charities to start their internship and training. During the course of the summer internships, the BU interns worked closely with the staff of several local Catholic Charities and learned about social justice issues from different perspectives. Learning about issues concerning social justice and poverty in American society helped the students understand the issues that Palestinian society also struggles with. Catholic Charities USA’s drive to find solutions for the needs in American society motivated the students to look for solutions to some of the issues they face within their communities in Palestine as well.
Not only did the students gain experience working with different marginalized communities and supporting the staff, their time in the USA also served as a means to create mutual understanding between Americans and Palestinians. The shared passion for ending social injustice and eliminating poverty forged intimate understandings of the other’s similarities. In addition to their field experiences as interns, the students also said they had been “struck by the ease and freedom of movement” they had experienced in the USA and noted how “different from Palestine” that was. Amjad Musleh, one of the interns, said: “At home, there are so many checkpoints that I must go through to get to my destination, but in America I felt free”.

Graduation Ceremony Encouraging Further Education
Bethlehem University held its 38th graduation ceremony in June 2014. Bethlehem University, celebrating its Jubilee of forty years with the theme “Knowledge, Empowerment and Liberation” celebrated the successful completion of its 697 seniors who received their diplomas during this special ceremony. Dr. Michael Sansur, the Executive Vice President gave a warm welcome to the graduates and their families and Brother Peter Bray, the Vice Chancellor gave the opening speech. He heartily congratulated the graduates, emphasizing how special this graduation ceremony was due to the 40th Jubilee year of Bethlehem University. “I congratulate the students graduating today as Bethlehem University celebrates forty years of service to the Palestinian people,” Brother Peter told the graduates. The Vice Chancellor also encouraged the graduates to continue pursuing their education and become active members in their community to help build Palestine. He said, “You are coming to the end of your time as students here at Bethlehem University, but I hope it is not the end of your desire to learn. You need to be open to continue to learn and I hope you look back on your time here at Bethlehem University with satisfaction. You now move into something different, a life after 6
Bethlehem University. I urge you to take what you learned here and use it. Use it to continually improve yourself. Use it to improve the organizations in which you become involved. Use it to make Palestine a better place because you are part of it.” Mr. Samer Shehada, member of the Board of Trustees highlighted the perseverance of Palestinian youth to pursue their higher education regardless of the hardships they face. Mr. Shehada asked the local industry to embrace the new graduates and give them a chance to work and develop professionally. Mr. Fuad Kattan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, urged the graduates to stay connected with the University, noting that the University will always give them support and guidance as they forge their career in the future. On this 40th Jubilee year, Bethlehem University takes pride in having nearly 15,000 graduates since 1975.
Honorary Doctorates Awarded Honoring Excellence and Dedication This year, Bethlehem University conferred honorary doctorates on four distinguished persons. Two honorary doctorates were granted during the graduation ceremony in June to Dr. Jad Isaac and Brother Rodolfo Cosimo Meoli. H.E. Dr. Talal Abu Ghazaleh was also granted an honorary degree, which was awarded during the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Talal Abu Ghazaleh School of Business at the German-Jordanian University, held on the 9th of August 2014, in Amman, Jordan. Bethlehem University conferred an honorary doctorate on H.E. Afif Safieh during the closing ceremony of the 40th Jubilee celebration on 12th September.
Dr. Jad Isaac, from the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour received an honorary doctorate in humanities. Dr. Isaac was Dean of Science at Bethlehem University from 1982 to 1987 and also taught at the Biology Department in the foundational years of Bethlehem University. He is currently the Executive Director of the Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem (ARIJ), an organization that has significantly contributed to research in agriculture, environment, land use, and water in Palestine. He also heads the Palestinian delegation for environmental working groups in many multilateral talks.
An honorary doctorate in humanities was also conferred upon Brother Rodolfo Cosimo Meoli from Italy. Brother Meoli has been extensively involved in education in Italy for many years and serves as Postulator General of the Christian
Brothers in Rome. His advocacy of the Brothers’ educational mission and his own commitment and dedication to education along with his understanding and support of the unique role Bethlehem University plays as the only Catholic university in Palestine, are indeed exemplary.
Bethlehem University also conferred an honorary degree in humanities on H.E. Dr. Talal Abu Ghazaleh, who has made significant contributions to the Arab education sector. He has worked effortlessly to strengthen the institutional capacities of Arab Ministries of Education and has pioneered educational management systems and teacher trainings in the region. He has also been involved in the areas of intellectual property and accounting. H.E. Dr. Talal Abu Ghazaleh was born in Jaffa and said in his speech that he was “overwhelmed with this distinctive award especially because it comes from Palestine, my birthplace and pride”.
During the closing ceremony of the 40th Jubilee, Bethlehem University conferred an honorary degree in humanities on H.E. Afif Safieh. He has been a long-time friend and supporter of Bethlehem University. In his diplomatic capacity, he has held posts in Washington, Moscow, and London. H.E. Afif Safieh has been an eloquent advocate for the Palestinian cause for many years and served on the Bethlehem University Board of Regents from 1995 until 2005. 7
Jubilee Closing Ceremony
Bethlehem University celebrated the end of the 40 Jubilee year with a great ceremony held at the Furno Hall on Friday 12 September 2014. The ceremony started with a welcome by Dr. Michael Sansur, Executive Vice President followed by a performance by “The Olive Branches Choir” who started their performance with the Palestinian National Anthem, following a moment of silence for those who died in Gaza. In his welcoming speech Brother Peter Bray, Vice Chancellor, said “Bethlehem University is unashamedly a Catholic University where all members of our community feel comfortable to come,” and he added “what we are doing here in Palestine is to provide an environment where people can live life in its fullness”. After the Bethlehem University anthem, Dr. Sansur mentioned the names of the first faculty, staff and members of the Board of Trustees who served Bethlehem University at its beginning in 1973, who were not present either because they passed away or because they were not able to attend. Brother Peter expressed gratitude to those first faculty, staff and trustees who decided to invest their time and energy in serving something that had just started. Their investment made Bethlehem University what it is today. He also expresses gratitude to those 112 students who in 1973 decided to join something they knew very little about. One of the highlights of the event was the conferral of 8
the Honorary Doctorate upon His Excellency Ambassador Affif Safieh, for his service throughout the past decades to the Palestinian people. Dr. Irene Hazou, Vice President for Academic Affairs read the Citation of Honoris-Causa for Ambassador Safieh, mentioning the different important positions that he played as a representative of the Palestinians and a long-term advocate for peace and justice in Palestine. A modest reception prepared by the students and staff of the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism followed the event where the invitees had a chance to chat and exchange greetings. The closing ceremony ended a year of festivities and activities organized through the year. The activities varied in type and nature. The different faculties organized their own activities, the Advancement Office organized a gala dinner in Washington DC and Chicago in the USA, and the Alumni Office and the Faculty of Science organized an alumni gathering for the Faculty’s graduates. A special lighting of the Christmas tree was one of the main highlights of the Jubilee activities in addition to the special Graduation Ceremony and many other activities spiced with the Jubilee year. Bethlehem University celebrated forty years of “Knowledge, Empowerment and Liberation” since 1973 and is now looking forward to the next forty years where it is seeking development, and progress for the benefit of the Palestinian people.
Spotlights Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, Elected Superior General The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools during its 45th General Chapter in Rome elected Brother Robert Schieler as Superior General. His election makes him the 27th successor of St. John Baptist de La Salle. He follows Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, FSC, who served as Superior General for 14 years. Brother Robert, the third American Brother to be elected as Superior General, will be leading the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools also known as De La Salle Brothers, which is the largest order of religious Brothers in the Church dedicated to education. Brother Robert, who is also currently a member of the Bethlehem University Board of Regents, was General Councilor
for the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) for seven years (2007-2014). From 2001-2007 he served as Visitor of the Baltimore District and before his election as Visitor, Brother Robert was the Director of Education for the United States-Toronto Region. He holds Masters degrees in European History (Notre Dame) and Asian Studies (University of Philippines) as well as a doctorate in Educational Administration (University of Pennsylvania). The Vice Chancellor, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students at Bethlehem University extend their warmest congratulations to Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, on being elected as Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Hani Abu Dayyah, Member of the Board of Trustees Hani Abu Dayyeh joined the Board of Trustees in 2013 as a result of his strong belief in the educational mission of Bethlehem University and the importance of higher education for the Palestinian people. “The importance of Bethlehem University in contributing to the development of human resources in Palestine is significant”, he said. As a professional and business owner in the tourism industry, Abu Dayyeh is passionate about the training of young professionals for the Palestinian tourism industry. Bethlehem University’s Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism recently had a Masters in Tourism Studies accredited which Hani believes has set Bethlehem University on the road towards becoming a proactive regional player in the field of Hospitality and Tourism studies. Born and raised in Jerusalem, Hani became one of the key players in the development of the tourism industry in Palestine. In his capacity as co-owner of the Near East Tourism, Abu Dayyeh contributed especially to the progressive growth of the tourism industry in the Jerusalem and Bethlehem regions.
Abu Dayyeh also highly values and supports the genetic studies and research being done at Bethlehem University at the Heredity Laboratory. He has high hopes for the Heredity Laboratory and the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences to eventually expand into a medical school. Abu Dayyeh notes that the role of Bethlehem University in the region is of great importance and wishes for the University “to continue to be effective contributors to the development of Palestine”.

Groundbreaking Genetic Research Preventing Hearing Loss The Heredity Research Lab (HRL) at Bethlehem University is providing genetic knowledge much needed for the wellbeing of Palestinian society. Genetic research and technology are changing the face of genetic diagnosis and counselling. While in the past, it would take on average one to five years to identify a mutation that leads to deafness, today the genetic basis for deafness can be determined within months in a child or adult with inherited hearing loss. Early detection and consecutive treatment of hearing impairment can have a significant effect on a person’s opportunities in the future.
There are several critical components of appropriate genetic services. In recent HRL studies involving a large cohort of Palestinian families affected by hearing loss, three genes with Professor Kanaan damaging changes were identified. What is particularly captivating is the variety of genes and proteins they encode, as well as the types of mutations that lead to hereditary hearing loss. The general aim of HRL is to develop an on-going, integrated clinical and molecular resource that addresses 10

This resource lab currently provides the basis for scientific discovery of new genes, as well as provision of genetic services to affected families and communities. Creation of such services is particularly important in Palestine, as the diseases HRL is seeking to prevent pose considerable human, economic, and logistic challenges. These challenges are particularly difficult to meet with the limited medical resources in Palestine.
HRL’s work currently also provides genome-related practical know-how as well as compute-intensive tools for the entire academic community of Palestine. HRL supports new biotechnological enterprises in the areas of diagnostics, agriculture, combatting genetic diseases, and genetic counselling.
Professor Kanaan recently received an award from Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan for Best Scientific Researcher in the Region for Prevention of Genetic Diseases. According to Professor Kanaan, the work at HRL is indeed important and “aims specifically to develop crucial clinical and molecular capabilities and to create a comprehensive genetic service for the Palestinian population”.
Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Hashem Shahin, Associate Professor of Biology, Bethlehem University Dr. Hashem Shahin has recently been promoted to Associate Professor of Biology. He was also honored with the 2014 Outstanding Junior Researcher Award at Bethlehem University. In his sophomore year at BU, Hashem took a microbiology course with one of Palestine’s premier researchers, Professor Moien Kanaan, who recruited him as a research assistant on a small research project. What decisively sealed his choice in the sciences was a research assistant position he was offered right after his graduation with Dr. Adnan Shqirat, another distinguished researcher in the Biology Department at BU. After his graduate and PhD studies, Shahin returned to the University as Assistant Professor of Biology in 2008. Dr. Shahin has been engaged in scientific research that, in the spirit of the best traditions at BU, serves the needs of the Palestinian people and seeks to make a difference in their lives. His research provides scientific insights into different conditions such as hearing loss, color blindness, CMT, autism, schizophrenia and cleft lip and/or palate. These conditions severely affect many families in our community as a result of the demographic structure and the marriage patterns common in Palestinian society.
at BU, Dr. Shahin has been one of the most prolific and accomplished junior scholars. He has thus published more than 12 papers in prestigious, international peer-reviewed journals such as The American Journal of Human Genetics, Human Mutation, MCB, and Cell. Dr. Shahin is under no illusion about the challenges facing Palestinian researchers in developing their research agenda and their publication record. However, his word to fellow researchers is to work even harder to secure funding from different sources on different topics. This is the only way researchers can leave their imprint on their academic institutions and society.
His research has implications for diverse ethnic and national groups worldwide; the discoveries he has made in Palestine facilitated the identification of the causative mutations in people from Turkey, Europe, and Japan. This research fueled and reinforced his commitment to scholarship and publications. Since his appointment

New Masters Program in Social Work The need for highly qualified professionals in the field of social work became apparent after a comprehensive assessment of the needs of Palestinian society that was carried out by the University in 2008.
came after several years of hard work by the academic and administrative teams at Bethlehem University. The program successfully commenced during the Fall Semester with 19 students enrolled.
Acknowledging the importance of social workers with strong academic backgrounds, the University set out to develop a Masters program in social work in collaboration with and support from the University of Washington, Seattle. Special emphasis in the program is on qualitative and quantitative research methods and program evaluation; skills that are especially important in the ever-growing NGO community in Palestine. Dr. Muna Matar, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, said the approval of the new Masters program

New Appointments Dean of Research:
Professor Jamil Khader Professor Jamil Khader is Dean of Research and Professor of English at Bethlehem University, Palestine. Professor Khader is the author of numerous publications on postcolonial feminism, popular culture, literary theory, and pedagogy, which appeared in various international peer-reviewed journals and other collections. One of his recent books was the well-received Cartographies of Transnationalism in Postcolonial Feminisms: Geography, Culture, Identity, Politics (Lexington Books 2012).
Dean of the Faculty of Arts:
Ms. Hanadi Younan Ms. Hanadi I. Soudah-Younan is currently the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and the Chairperson of the English Department at Bethlehem University. She is a full time lecturer of English Literature. Her primary interests and publications focus on the teaching of literature, critical theory and research that focuses on identity. An alumnae of Bethlehem University, she earned her Masters of Arts in English from Brigham Young University, Utah. She is a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at Stony Brook University, New York.
Dean of the Faculty of Education:
Dr. Hala Rashed Dr. Hala Rashed holds a PhD in Drama in Education from Exeter University, UK. Her long term research interests focuses on the creative pedagogies and the role of drama in pre-service and in-service teacher education. She established Bethlehem University Drama Society (BUDS) and serves currently as its director. Current work includes the use of Forum Theatre and Street Theatre to highlight issues related to gender, human and children’s rights and the environment.

Vice President for Human Resources and Administrative Affairs:
Brother Mark McKeon, FSC Brother Mark served as Provincial of all the Brother’s work in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Pakistan. He brings extensive experience to Bethlehem University, where he will be taking up the task of integrating the current faculty and staff HR offices into one inclusive HR office for all staff and faculty. Chairperson of the Department of Biology:
Dr. Ghassan Handal Dr. Ghassan Handal has been with the University since 28 years, first as a student and later as a part of faculty. After his PhD in Parasitology he became the general secretary of the Palestinian partner committee working for KAAD (Katholischer Akademischer AuslanderDienst) fellowships. In 2011 Handal resumed his work at the University and has now been appointed chairperson of his department.
Chairperson of the Department of Arabic:
Dr. Said Ayyad Dr. Said Ayyad holds a PhD in Psychology. A well-known journalists, he previously worked with Reuters and directed Palestine TV. He has published extensively, including two books. His latest book is titled “The Struggle of the Palestinian Political Mind”. Dr. Ayyad joined Bethlehem University in 2004 as a journalism teacher and will now be serving the Department of Arabic as the Chairperson.
Chairperson of the Department of Social Sciences
Ms. Mineverva Jarayseh Ms. Minerva Jarayseh’s primary interests are in the fields of women empowerment, domestic violence, and family intervention. She has extensive experience working with the local community, especially as a school counselor. Ms. Jarayseh has published articles and contributed to edited volumes on issues such as reconciliation, community participation, and honor killing. She is a member of several community based organizations.
Career Day
Each year the Counseling Office at the Dean of Students Office organizes a Career Day for senior students, bringing students and employers together. More than 60 private and public sector companies and organizations gathered at Bethlehem University to interview hundreds of senior students. The Career Day is in line with efforts invested by the Palestinian Ministry of Labor which has launched a gateway that enables job seekers to find a job in a simple way by accessing a nationwide database of employers. The Palestinian Minister of Labor, Ahmad Majdalani, attended this year’s career day and opened the newly established Career Guidance Unit at Bethlehem University which, in cooperation with the Alumni Office, will assist graduates with finding jobs.

This portal will increase potential employment opportunities for Bethlehem University graduates and match them with jobs fitting their educational backgrounds.
One of the employers present at the Career Day was Bashir Hanani, who graduated from the English Department in 1989. He worked with his father in construction and their company slowly developed to become one of the major construction companies in the northern part of the West Bank that now employs over 300 employees. Hanani was the keynote speaker of the event and attributed a major part of his success to the educational experience he had at Bethlehem University. His college 13

Quality of Education in Palestine The Faculty of Education organized three conferences during the months of April and May 2014 to mark the culminating event of its project “Improving the Quality of Primary and Secondary Education in Palestine” which started in 2010. Issues such as Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Information Technology in Education were high on the agenda. During the three conferences, the Faculty of Education focused on the importance of equipping its graduates with the latest teaching methods, thus enabling them to utilize the latest information technology as well as preparing them to adopt special education techniques. This was an indispensable approach since a majority of BU graduates will eventually become teachers in primary and secondary schools. While the first project from 2007 to 2010 focused on 15 schools, this new and expanded project from 2010-2014 has involved 118 schools in the middle and southern West Bank: 58 schools of which are direct partners while the additional 60 schools are indirect beneficiaries. Experts from various sectors and specialties contributed to the success of these three conferences that targeted school directors and special education teachers as well as specialists from schools in the Bethlehem, Hebron and Jerusalem areas, most of which are partners in the project. A number of recommendations were proposed in planning for new projects. The conference participants recommended increasing the partnership between the civil society organizations and the local schools with special attention to early childhood and special education.

Bethlehem University is grateful to the Fundación Promoción Social de la Cultura (FPSC) and the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) for their support and generous funding. BU also acknowledges the involvement and active participation of the Palestinian Ministry of Education in this project since its successful beginnings from 2007 to 2010.
Palestine Museum of Natural History at Bethlehem University On the 30th of May, Bethlehem University, represented by the Vice Chancellor, Brother Peter Bray, signed a memorandum of understanding with Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh, director of Cytogenetic services, to institutionalize and host the Palestine Museum of Natural History (PMNH) in Mar Andrea, one of the University’s off-campus facilities. A number of staff and faculty attended the signing ceremony which took place at the Faculty and Staff Lounge in the Millennium Hall. Professor Qumsiyeh and others will also volunteer in the program to ensure the success of the museum. These volunteer opportunities will include work in the areas of biodiversity research, taxonomy of different animal and plant groups, collection management, maintaining living ecosystems, administrative areas, fundraising, media work, education, publicity, working with children, art, and exhibits. “This day is of historical significance,” Professor Qumsiyeh said in his speech after the signing. He added: “We started with the vision of my uncle Sana Atallah that now became the collective vision of many people. On Sana’s summer visits to Palestine he would take me and other children to the field. I was impressed as a child by his dedication and love of nature. When he died at age 27, I promised to finish the work he planned to do. One of those was to research mammals in the Arab world and I thus published two books and over 70 papers on mammals, the other a museum dedicated to Palestinian nature”.
Bethlehem University’s role is to provide the location and infrastructure support. On his part, Brother Peter expressed gratitude to Professor Qumsiyeh and his family for their dedication to this wonderful cause. He added that all those who will visit the museum will realize the value of the items that will be displayed there and will have a rich resource for research. Thousands of samples and items will be displayed in the museum. The Palestine Museum of Natural History will carry out high caliber research, provide education to the Palestinian community, and work on biodiversity and environmental conservation.

Palestinian Festival of Literature hosted by English Department Bethlehem University’s English Department was privileged to host one of the most important events in literature, the Palestine Festival of Literature, “PalFest 2014”, last June. An impressive group of authors, journalists and performers participated during the festival. During the first panel on “Women, Identity and Writing History”, acclaimed novelists Susan Abulhawa, Linda Spalding, and Sapphire performed, as well as poets Nathalie Handal and Sabrina Mahfouz. They read selections from their work and participated in discussion about being women and writers.

This panel included Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Ursula Lindsey, Rachel Shabi, and Najwan Darwish. They discussed the new kinds of media and the effects these can have in the way news is reported today. The Young Chef of Palestine Competition
Nidal Abboud from the city of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, was the winner of the first-ever Young Chef Competition organized by the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism at Bethlehem University in coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Five finalists competed for the award of $1,200 donated by Mr. Hani Abu Dayyeh, a member of the Board of Trustees of Bethlehem University. This amount of $1,200 was given not as a cash award but in the form of culinary arts courses to be taken at the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism of Bethlehem University. Mr. Nabil Mufdi, Director of the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism, said the competition is aimed at highlighting the importance of culinary arts and to encourage young chefs to match international standards and to further develop their culinary skills.
This event coincided with the signing of a memorandum of Understanding between Bethlehem University and the University of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde in the Philippines, which will help Bethlehem University develop the curriculum of the Institute of Hotel Management and exchange expertise in the hospitality and culinary arts. The College of Saint Benilde has a School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management, which primes future hoteliers, restaurateurs, and managers for the rigors and precision of the hospitality industry. The signing of this understanding comes in line with Bethlehem University’s plan to develop the programs of the Institute of Hotel Management in the newly acquired Mount David property as part of its comprehensive strategic plan.
During the three-hour long competition, the participating young chefs were asked to prepare an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert, where the raw materials used were kept in a mystery box. The jury was composed of Mr. Karl J. Guggenmos, WACS Global Master Chef, University Dean of Culinary Education at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island in the USA; Chef Peter Hermantas, Chef and Instructor at the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism at Bethlehem University; and Chef Nabil Aho, Master Trainer at the Professional Promotion Hospitality Section of the Pontifical Institute of Notre Dame Center, Jerusalem. The competition is first of its kind and certainly will not be the last, after the successful event held at the University. Young chefs are strongly encouraged to be ready and get prepared for the next competition. 18
