In 1957, one year after Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children opened its doors, the first Glennon Guild was formed. Over the past 54 years, the Glennon Guild has remained true to its mission of serving as the hands of Christ by promoting and advancing the welfare of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, its patients, and staff through volunteer effort. Through the dedication of the 300+ member Glennon Guild, several million dollars and thousands of service hours have been contributed to the hospital. This past June, I began my presidency of the Glennon Guild Board. In the 15 years that I have served on the Guild Board, I have been continually awed by the talents and generosity of the 70 women with whom I serve. “No” is a word that does not exist in the vocabulary of these women. Whether working tirelessly on one of the annual events: the Lobby Sale for Cardinal Over the past 54 years, the Glennon staff and visitors, Glennon Guild has remained the fall Fashion Show true to its mission of serving and Luncheon, or on a spring Showhouse, as the hands of Christ... the Guild Board members are united by their desire to help bring the best of care to the children served by SSM Cardinal Glennon. Clearly, “Our love for kids just keeps on growing!” This fall, the Glennon Guild is launching two new fundraisers to benefit SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. By now, you have probably seen or heard one of the radio or TV spots, newspaper features, or billboards promoting the Glennon Card. The Glennon Card, the result of a partnership between the Guild and the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, is a discount shopping and dining card program. The Glennon Card may be purchased for $50 at one of nearly 50 local merchants. Glennon Card purchasers will receive 20% discount at over 225 fabulous shops, restaurants, spas and salons from Oct. 28 through Nov. 6, 2011. One hundred percent of this tax deductible contribution directly benefits Cardinal Glennon. Participating merchants are listed at glennoncard.org. The second Glennon Guild initiative this fall is Glennon Gourmet, a cookbook filled with more than 450 recipes from Guild members and friends. NEW CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION OFFICES he mission of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, led by the Board of Governors, is now closer than ever to our incredible children’s medical center, literally! On Monday, July 18, 2011, the

Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation offices moved to 3800 Park Avenue and onto the medical center’s campus. The new offices are just 100 yards from the Emergency Entrance and directly across the street from the Pediatric Research Institute and Cord Blood Bank.

As part of a new strategic focus developed by the entire staff of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, we are trying to better connect our operations and efforts with the daily work of the hospital. Previously, the foundation offices were located nearly one mile west of the main campus which made trips to the hospital inconvenient and, thus, interaction with hospital staff and patients was less frequent. “We need to know them better,” says Dan Buck, the new executive director of the foundation. “Our new location makes it easy to attend hospital meetings, visit various departments, give donor tours, host receptions and connect with more patients and their families on a regular basis. It helps bring the mission and focus of our work so much closer, both physically and emotionally,” Buck adds.

The architectural design of the space is conducive to teamwork and multi-department interaction. It is also a bright and comfortable space with an open floor plan and tons of natural light. You also know it’s a children-friendly zone with the colorful window treatments and the bright red sun displayed on the floor of the lobby. We applaud the work of our architect, Zwick and Gandt, as well as the lead contractor, Voss Construction. We have doubled our office space with more room for volunteers, guild members, in-house mailers, convenient parking, increased storage and three wonderful meeting rooms. Most importantly, the move enables the foundation

e are excited to announce the formation of a new Cardinal Glennon youth group that will be made up of past patients of our medical center and several of their siblings. The Glennon Youth Council is made up of kids and young adults who know us best! The role of these young Glennon Ambassadors is to take on projects around the hospital that need a kid’s perspective! One of their first projects is to give their feedback and ideas on what should go into the new playground slated to be installed this fall. The Glennon Youth Council is giving fresh perspectives and some great ideas to our architects to make this new play space a truly kid-friendly environment. SHARES ITS SUCCESS WITH THE KIDS AT SSM CARDINAL GLENNON “My son Jake had hernia surgery at Cardinal Glennon in 1991, when he was 1 year old. Nothing overly serious, but any time there is surgery on an infant, it is a scary thing,” says John F. Eilermann Jr., chief executive officer and chairman of McBride & Son Companies. “The care given by the doctors, nurses and staff was extraordinary. I knew right then and there that I wanted to be a part of the hospital and help support this wonderful institution and its courageous staff.” McBride & Son, one of the country’s 40 largest homebuilders, became a supporter of the Columbia Golf Classic in 1992. A few years later Eilermann became chairman of the event and has led it for 18 years. The 28th annual Columbia Golf Classic was held in September on the Columbia Golf Course in Columbia, Ill.

Those tournaments have produced more than $1.3 million to benefit patients at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. The tournament was launched by golf course developer Lou Mund and his friend Richard Dohack Sr., who was a member of the Cardinal Glennon Board of Governors. Mund donated the course, golf carts and employees. When he sold the course in 2001, “I negotiated into the sale an extension of this golf event for as long as I am alive,” Mund says. “I’m pretty proud of that tournament. When you are able to do things to help other people, and share some of your luck and success, that is a neat thing.” “Without Lou’s generosity, the Columbia Golf Classic would not exist,” Eilermann says. “We also have had many

generous suppliers involved. Schnucks Markets has donated the food for years, Illinois Distributing Co. donates the beer and Coca-Cola donates the soda and water. Fabick CAT has been a key partner since the beginning of the tournament. The majority of the support comes from McBride & Son’s many vendors and trade partners. They are extremely loyal and have become as passionate about helping the kids at Cardinal Glennon as we are,” he continues. McBride & Son, a Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center supporter for a quarter of a century, was one of the classic’s first corporate sponsors. The Columbia Golf Classic typically draws 132 golfers and many volunteers who minimize expenses, Eilermann says. “The committee members put in a long day’s work but have a lot of fun. You’ll find committee members carrying bags from the players’ cars in the morning, cooking and preparing the food, setting up chairs and cleaning up afterwards.” When little Jake underwent surgery at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, “It was an eye-opening experience,” Eilermann says. “We met several families of very sick kids and saw the care and support they were given, both in terms of medical treatment and spiritual support. There were even some kids who did not have parents present — the staff treated these kids with the same love and attention as they would with their own child.” “The Columbia Classic may not be the fanciest tournament, but it is incredibly profitable. It’s very easy to become passionate about an event where 90 percent of the money goes directly to the hospital. are my kids. Taking care of them is my

job.

What do I do? Well, meet my friends Ryan and Madison. They are patients in the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center, where I work. When they started coming here, they were shy and didn’t talk a lot. Now look at them! They laugh and smile. We have tea parties, and play basketball and just visit. Their mom says they feel better when they leave here, and do better at school and around their friends. I hope they come back soon. They love to scratch my ears! How did I learn to be a therapy dog? As soon as I was born they started training me to be calm and comfortable around all sorts of people. My schooling lasted more than 10 dog years – I think you would say 18 months in people years. I majored in child therapy because they already had a job lined up for me at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. I learned a few tricks that the kids could imitate, like drinking tea from my cup, pulling my blankie over myself and demonstrating a physical examination.

I was chosen to go to school to be a therapist because of my sparkling personality and because I’m so calm and cool under pressure. A lot of people in this medical center seem to depend on me. Every morning that I walk into the building, I meet a lot of children, and sometimes parents, doctors and nurses who need a “Higgy Hug”. That’s what counseling is all about.

I love this job.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DOG THERAPY og therapy has long been considered a possible therapeutic tool in the treatment of many patients, particularly those accompanied by anxiety and stress. “There were a few studies done around 1982 regarding the impact of companion dogs on children. It reduced their anxiety and improved their social interaction,” says Rolanda Maxim, M.D., medical director of the Autism Center in the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “A recent study showed that a dog can decrease the blood level of the stress hormone, cortisol, in a child with autism.” Higgins, who is 5 years old, has been assigned to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center since 2007. He was donated by a St. Louis organization called CHAMP or Canine Helpers Allow More Possibilities. Higgins lives and rides to work with Betty Miller, R.N., a nurse at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for more than 30 years. Higgins, a standard poodle and golden retriever mix, was chosen for his job in part due to his size.

“He has a calm personality and is conditioned to handle whatever happens to him,” Miller says. Higgins has worked with rehabilitation patients who need encouragement in their therapy sessions. He has been especially helpful in working with children with autism, who can have many issues surrounding social interactions. “When Higgins enters the room, the children become much calmer,” Miller says. “A lot of children with autism don’t make eye contact with other people, but they will make eye contact

by allowing the techniques to be demonstrated on him. For children who have trouble going to bed and falling asleep at night, Higgins demonstrates by lying down and pulling his blanket over himself. “Sometimes the children will actually lie next to him because they want to imitate him,” Miller says. Why do children with autism relate so comfortably to a dog? “The dog gives unconditional love,” Maxim says. “They wait for the child to give a signal, and then they respond right away. They are kind, soft, cuddly, forgiving and accepting.”

Many children may benefit from having a companion dog, she says. Caring for the dog can boost self-esteem, and walking the dog may help children experience social acceptance. “If you are walking your dog, other kids will approach you to play with your dog, and you might feel more self assured,” Maxim explains. Ryan Rea, 8, and sister Madison Rea, 9, are patients in the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center. “Ryan has classic autism, and Madison has pervasive developmental disorder,” says their mother, Alice Rea, who also is a medical technician in Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center’s laboratory service. “Lack of communication was the big thing that led Higgins goes nose to nose with Madison Rea giving her peace of mind to their diagnoses. with Higgins. Some of the children don’t initiate play or learn by imitation. One child who had never initiated play with another child arranged the tea set and poured Higgins a cup of water. Her father said it was the first time she had ever done that,” she continues. Higgins also has calmed children before physical exams or blood drawing

before she has lab tests.

They just didn’t talk.” Madison’s diagnosis, pervasive developmental disorder, is one subtype of the autism spectrum disorders. Office visits have been calmer with Higgins’ assistance, Alice explains. “Last time we were here, Madison went downstairs to have blood drawn. They had Higgins pretend he was having blood drawn, then Madison had hers drawn,” she says. “It went fine. Two months prior to that, she was kicking and scratching when her blood was drawn.” Ryan has been drawn out socially. “Before Higgins, Ryan was running all over the room and looking out the window. He Higgins has helped Ryan and Madison become more comfortdidn’t want to in social interactions, says participate. They are more vocal and are learning how to interact and do pretend play.” The Knights of Columbus Developmental Center staff has begun a research project to quantify the behavioral responses that Higgins can elicit in therapy sessions. “We have collected data on more than 20 children,” Maxim says. “We tried different activities with and without the dog in the room. We want to see if the child will participate more, have more imagination and follow directions more readily if they are participating with the dog.” So Higgins is not only a therapist but also a scientist? “Yes,” Miller says. “Higgins is a clinical researcher.”

THE MOST VULNERABLE

“We are asking you to love these children as yourself!” proclaimed a Missouri Knights of Columbus newsletter in 1982 upon the announcement of a unique and long-lasting affiliation with SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

ith that, the Knights assumed sponsorship of what became known as the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of children and teens with mental and physical handicaps. “The Knights realized that the availability of developmental pediatric programs in the state was really narrow,” says John S. The organization had long supported Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and other children’s causes before committing itself to the developmental center. “When the Knights were founded in 1882, one of its missions was helping the most vulnerable. I’m sure the focus on children was a natural outgrowth of that,” Appelbaum says. The center evaluates and treats children and adolescents for diagnoses such as autism spectrum and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Recent additions to the center’s staff have reduced waiting times for an initial three-hour examination to six weeks from the national average of 18 months. Increasing numbers of infants and children with a suspected diagnosis of autism are referred to the center. In 2007, the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center was designated as a Missouri Autism Center by the Missouri Department of Mental Health. In a typical week, the center’s staff diagnoses six children with autism. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental

disorders that affect an average of one in 110 children in the United States. “The symptoms of autism are pervasive difficulties in social interactions, and verbal and nonverbal communications accompanied by repetitive behaviors and obsessive-compulsive traits. Most children with ASD have sensory integration difficulties, such as the dislike of certain noises or food textures or the feel of a certain fabric,” says Rolanda Maxim, M.D., medical director of the autism center and an associate professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University Medical School.

Weight Management Program Gives Spencer a New Life, On and Off the Field

Spencer Wells entered adolescence as a typical “couch kid,” one of the estimated 12.5 million overweight American children and teens. “I was lazy pretty much of the time. Didn’t really do anything,” he recalls.

His weight and lifestyle affected many aspects of his life, says his mother, Sheila Hughes. “He laid around the house. He had very low self-esteem. He didn’t do anything except go to visit a friend. A lot of his grades in school were D’s,” she says. “He didn’t start gaining weight until he was 6 years old. That is when his father died. When his father was alive, he was a well-balanced kid. We ate meals at home a lot. He did a lot of things with his father. They played football and basketball, and went swimming and fishing.”

pencer had been visiting SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for many years, says Elizabeth Babusis, M.D., a member of the Pediatric Lipid Disorders Clinic. “I had to put him on medication for his cholesterol. That may be due partly to his genetics, but he was not really making progress. He wasn’t making changes in his food and exercise choices. I thought he needed an extra level of intervention.” Babusis referred Spencer to the Live Right! weight management program at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, where she also sees patients. The program combines input from pediatric specialists, psychologists and a nutrition counselor to deal with obesity and the many adverse health effects it can present. The incidence of obesity among Nadim Kanafani, director children and teens of Live Right!, urges parents has nearly tripled to take control of their since 1980, children's nutrition and activities. according to the

CDC statistics show that the growing incidence of obesity has brought increases in harmful effects such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, liver disease, gallstones, heartburn and musculoskeletal pain and deformities. Overweight youth also face great risks of social and psychological problems such as poor self-esteem and depression. Obesity and all of its side effects can linger into adulthood. “There used to be an attitude that children would grow out of

years of age in obese children,” he says. “Some of the children in our weight management program weigh 80 pounds by the time they are 3 years old. We have a 9-year-old who weighs 320 pounds, and a 16-year-old who is nearly 500 pounds.” According to Kanafani, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University, two trends have created one of the biggest health issues facing pediatricians in the 21st century. “Over the last 30 or 40 years, the American diet has become increasingly layered, complex and

Approximately ONE in SIX children and teens in the United States is obese obesity,” says Babusis, an adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “When we look at the statistics over time, we see that they don’t grow out of it. If you have excess weight in childhood, it is more likely you are going to have excess weight in adulthood, along with all the problems that come with it.” Obesity-linked diseases that once were rare in childhood are now seen routinely, says Nadim Kanafani, M.D., director of Live Right! and a pediatric endocrinologist at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “Kids now have diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. We have documented cardiovascular disease as early as 3 or 4

processed. The availability of low-cost, high-energy, poorly nutritious food has increased and people consume it in large quantities,” he says. Young people also are getting less exercise because there are fewer opportunities to play outside and more temptations to sit before television and computer screens. “Physical activity has been deengineered from our days,” he continues. The average school-age child or teen spends 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media such as televisions, computers, video games and cell phones, according to the

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Approximately one in six children and teens in the United States is obese based on measurements of body mass index (BMI). The index is calculated through age-adjusted comparisons of weight and height.

CDC. The centers also believe that only 18 percent of high school students meet the recommended minimum of 60 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. With these trends, a new term, “obesogenic,” has emerged to describe the environments in which some children gain too much weight, Kanafani says.

with vitamin D deficiencies, which can limit calcium uptake, and that relates directly to bone health.” Kathleen Spranaitis, P.N.P., B.C., of the division of pediatric gastroenterology is a pediatric nurse practitioner who sees patients in Live Right! “Children who are overweight frequently have gastrointestinal problems such as acid reflux, constipation and fatty liver disease,” she says. Obesity is often accompanied by a diet lacking in the healthy fiber of fruits and vegetables, she says. “Some families, because they have low incomes or because both parents work, can’t always have fresh produce or cook healthy meals. They are doing all they can to get food on the table for their kids.”

To depict the empty and harmful contents of popular foods, Helling shows families a series of test tubes representing the fat content of items such as an order of french fries. According to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, the leading sources of calories for children were cakes, cookies,

Three keys to weight management The Live Right! weight management program includes monitoring and treatment for the medical conditions associated with obesity as well as the nutritional and psychological guidance needed to help children lose weight. “Even younger children who are overweight can have trouble getting around and keeping up with their peers,” Babusis says. “Obesity can harm bones that are growing at a rapid rate during childhood. We can see crush injuries in the knee area that will cause the lower legs to grow crooked.” Poor dietary choices also produce constipation and, paradoxically, malnutrition. “Large amounts of calories consumed are not necessarily nutritionally important calories,” says Babusis. “We can see problems

Children who visit the weight management program often suffer from the same dietary issues that plague their parents. “Our kids often have one or more parents who also have weight issues. The parents are eating in the ways they were taught, and the kids will eat the ways they are taught,” Spranaitis says. A family’s first visit to Live Right! begins with a session led by registered dietitian Kathryn Helling, R.D., at which a healthy lunch is served with samples of light and nutritious foods. Many American families lack information on healthy food choices and appropriate portion sizes, Helling says. “We see families eating a lot of calorie-dense foods like snacks and cookies, that are not as nutrient-rich as fruits and vegetables. They need information on how much nutrition a toddler, a school-age child and a teenager need. “In families with weight issues, portions are usually very large. That reflects our social environment. We can go to the gas station and buy a 64-ounce soda or go to the movie theater and pick up a tub of popcorn that holds well over 1,000 calories. That is what they are used to. When we go

doughnuts, pies, granola bars, pizza and soda. For 2-and-3-year-olds, the second leading source of daily calories was fruit juice. The CDC says sugared drinks are the largest source of added sugar and a major source of calories in the diets of American youth. On a typical day, 80 percent of children and teens consume a sugared drink. “Sugar-sweetened beverages are usually something we need to target when we are talking with a family,” Helling says. Many parents mistake fruit juice as a healthy choice when in fact it contains as many calories as other sweetened drinks such as soda. “I encourage kids to drink no more than four to six ounces of 100-percent fruit juice a day,” Helling says. “Anything beyond that is excess calories. The kids can get better nutrition and fiber from eating the fruit itself.” Helling advises healthy meal planning as a benefit for the entire family. “Parents can help to prevent obesity by rolemodeling healthy eating habits themselves. They should sit down and have three meals a day. They can get their kids involved in meal preparation. Repeated exposure to healthy choices is important,” she says.

A visit to the Live Right! clinic includes a talk with one of its two child psychologists, Joel Nadler, Ph.D., or Amy Ford, Psy.D. “We see low self-esteem, teasing by peers or bullying and sometimes depression,” Ford says. “It is unclear whether these issues cause or result from being overweight, but if a child is overweight, he can be teased and can have low self-esteem. Then he feels depressed and turns to food to cope. When children turn to food to feel better, that adds more pounds and makes them feel worse about their weight, which unfortunately continues the cycle.” Ford feels that the first goal of counseling is determining whether a child has behavioral or psychiatric issues that must be addressed in weight management treatment. “The child may be extremely depressed or having significant peer problems or difficulties at home or school. We work on coping skills if those things are happening. If the child is very oppositional or defiant, we help the parents with ways of managing that as well as giving the child skills to cope with whatever is making him angry or upset,” she says. “The child may have untreated attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which makes them impulsive. If they see food, they want it and eat it.” Food also may have become a means of quieting tantrums or winning compliance with other behavioral issues. “Goals should be recognized with nonfood rewards,” Ford says. “Give them extra activities or privileges instead.” As with nutritional guidance, she says, the program’s behavioral counseling stresses family participation. “We encourage change within the whole family to be supportive of reaching the child’s goals. We don’t want the child to feel as if he has to eat healthy because he is being punished,” Ford says. Also, she says, “One of the major psychosocial factors in childhood obesity is family lifestyle choices. Children fall into the same activity and eating habits as their families. Parents need to think of what their behavior is modeling to their kids.”

SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center Joins School and Community Partnership —

Nutrition, Exercise and Tobacco Issues Addressed

he Missouri Foundation for Health has awarded a grant to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and Saint Louis University for a program that will address nutrition, exercise and tobacco usage in the Jennings Public School District. The Schools and Communities in Partnership Project aims to reduce personal behaviors and environmental factors that contribute to obesity and tobacco usage. The Missouri Foundation for Health provided half the funding for the project. Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the university provided matching funds. The project takes the expertise of the medical center into the community to assist the Jennings School District in formulating health and wellness policies for its students, says Nadim Kanafani, M.D., a pediatric endocrinologist at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. The next step will be evaluation of the nutritional, exercise and tobacco environment facing students. “We will train Jennings volunteers to take clipboards and look at each school – their playgrounds and cafeterias – and

the retail environment around each school. We will watch kids eating in the cafeterias. Down the road, as Jennings changes its policies on nutrition, physical activity and tobacco, we will assess outcomes,” says Kanafani, project director for the grant. “The goals are to have kids eat more fruits and vegetables, have more physical activity and be more aware of and think differently of tobacco. Two other keys are replication and dissemination, taking this experience to other schools and being able to report on what works and doesn’t work.” Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the Jennings School District will collaborate with the Healthy Youth Partnership, which connects more than 80 regional organizations in efforts to reduce obesity. The project will include organizations such as the American Lung Association, which has an ongoing program to reduce tobacco usage by youth. The project’s first year will cover technical assistance, policy formulation and baseline data collection, Kanafani says. “Year two will focus on how best to implement health and wellness policy.” glennon.org Fall 2011 • 21

The most important contribution of the Live Right! team’s members may be encouragement. “We are all coaches and cheerleaders,” Spranaitis says. “We reinforce the eating and activity behaviors the others are suggesting. We give it our best shot.” “I usually start discussions with parents by telling them that childhood obesity is not a child problem,” Kanafani says. “No child wants to be obese. Children are placed in environments that are obesogenic. Parents control the nutritional and activity environments in the home. Children do not have the ability to make choices. They will eat junk food if it is there. They will sit in front of the television all the time if it is on.” Encouragement, Psychologist Amy Ford Ford says, must be counsels families on issues given in realistic that may cause or result doses. “We give them from childhood obesity. room for error. I tell families they should never set seven-day-aweek goals. If you want your child to watch less TV or eat more vegetables, doing that five or six days a week is fine. It is too hard if you set unreasonable goals, because it feels terrible not to meet them, and that often gets people off track.”

Taking the next step Minimizing the nation’s obesity issues will require action in many areas, Kanafani says. “Systemic, multi-level changes will be needed, everything from food policy and food supply to the ways we build our neighborhoods.” Kanafani hopes to expand the Live Right! program to provide a greater depth of service to the medical center’s patients and surrounding communities. “We have a strong team of people who are very experienced in caring for families struggling with severe obesity. Then he stayed with it. When we have a successful patient, it is because the child or parent decides to make changes. When there is willingness for change, we can have success.” “It is a real challenge to reach and maintain a healthy weight,” Spranaitis says. “It is tough, really tough. It depends upon how committed the child and the family are.”

Parents need to think of what their behavior is modeling to their kids. and have more in-depth sessions with our dietitian on planning meals, shopping, reading labels and cooking. We could do hands-on learning with different foods, cooking styles and taste-testing,” he says. An exercise physiology lab would fill the requests of parents who desire assistance in supervising their child’s needed activities. “We could collaborate with our folks in physical therapy and athletic training to do monitored, group-exercise sessions,” Kanafani says. “Parents are not sure how to encourage big kids to move and exercise safely.” The center also would provide opportunities to study obesity complications and treatment outcomes, he says. "I am excited that the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation is expressing interest in working with the program and possibly helping us expand.”

“The people in the clinic showed me how to change my diet and increase my activities,” Spencer says. “I’ve changed what I eat, the portions I eat and how it is made. I’m not eating fried foods. Instead I’m eating baked and grilled foods. It was pretty easy. I have longer hours of exercise, and I am able to perform longer in sports. Now I have to stay active. I’m used to it.” Spencer’s life has improved off the athletic field, too, says his mother, Sheila. “Now he gets bored if he has to stay around the house. He has great self-esteem. He has a lot more friends, and he goes to the show, he goes bowling, goes driving, goes swimming. Before he went to weight management he wouldn’t do anything. “It has improved his academics, too,” she says. “He participates more in discussions and is more open with people. He is a really good kid.”

he joy of Caleb Ortbals’ birth suddenly dimmed. He inhaled blood before he could exit the womb and entered the world with a perforated lung. Through the fog of anesthesia, his mother vaguely remembers seeing two women in jumpsuits enter the room, rolling a Plexiglas incubator. They were a transport team from SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. It was Sept.16, 2009, in a delivery room at St. Anthony’s Medical Center,

a partner of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “It seemed like it played out in just a matter of minutes,” says Staci Ortbals. “I wasn’t aware of much. I was so sick. But I remember they waited until I was alert enough to put a transport blanket on him and hold his little hand. My husband, T.J., and Caleb’s grandparents were in the room. We did the only thing we could do — say a little prayer. Within an hour of when he was born, he was on his way to Cardinal Glennon.”

aleb’s journey was just the beginning of a struggle that could have gone either way. “My doctor baptized him at birth,” Staci says. “Everybody thought he was not going to make it. When we realized they were bringing the transport team, it was comforting to know he would be able to quickly get the level of care that he needed. If Cardinal Glennon had not had people on site at St. Anthony’s, we don’t know if Caleb would have survived the night.” Because Caleb’s lungs were not providing sufficient oxygen for his body, he was placed on an extra corporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO) in the pediatric intensive care unit at Cardinal Glennon Children’s

Medical Center. The device circulates the patient’s blood through a membrane to remove carbon dioxide and replenish oxygen. The blood is then pumped through the body. The procedure allows the heart and lungs to rest while recovering from an injury or infection. After four days on ECMO, Caleb moved to the Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Level III nursery that cares for some of the sickest babies born in the Midwest. “We had thousands of people praying for us,” his mother says. “We finally got to hold him when he was 6 days old. We were sent home on day 16! It was completely miraculous.” Just weeks before his second birthday, a bouncy, energetic Caleb returned to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center to christen a new “Cardinal Glennon Air” helicopter with a bottle of

sparkling grape juice that he poured on the aircraft’s nose and into himself. A couple of weeks later, he realized a dream of going for a train ride on the St. Louis Zoo Line. Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center became the first hospital in the region to introduce a dedicated neonatal transport team in 1979. It later added the capability to handle pediatric transports of older children. On July 1 the center placed its own helicopter into service.

It was completely miraculous.” For decades Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center had shared a helicopter with other hospitals. Due to increasing patient volumes, SSM Health Care — St. Louis contracted with Air Methods/ARCH Air Medical Service for the exclusive use of a dedicated pediatric and neonatal helicopter. In 2010, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center brought nearly 300 patients to the medical center by helicopter. Between 600 and 700 patients are transported each year by the center’s

ground ambulance. Patients are transported from community hospitals across eastern Missouri and southern Illinois. Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center is just one of a handful of tertiary care pediatric centers across the middle of the United States. The sickest and most seriously injured infants, children and teens require the care of such specialized centers. “Years ago, people assumed it would be better if kids were transported by special teams that had advanced skills in things like breathing assistance and vascular access,” says John Peter, M.D., medical director of pediatric transport. “In the last couple of years there has been published research that showed a clear value, to transporting kids with specialized teams.” Respiratory illnesses, neurologic diseases and other infections are the leading causes of childhood and teenage transports to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “We transport trauma as well,” says Peter, an emergency department physician and professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “Older children and teens usually receive Karen Zahn, R.N.C., good care from M.S.N., C.C.R.N. paramedics and community hospitals. Younger kids or kids with more serious injuries will come to a place like Cardinal Glennon.” Neonates typically are transported to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center due to infections, lung disease, heart problems or anomalies that will require surgical intervention, says Laura Cerny, M.D., the neonatal transport director and an assistant professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “In the last couple of years there has been published research that showed a clear value to transporting kids with specialized teams.” “Babies who are born prematurely also need to be sent to a tertiary care center,” she says. “Many smaller medical centers are not experienced in caring for the tiny infants and may not have the specialized equipment and services needed to deal with complex disease processes.” Broken bones are a major cause of trips to pediatric hospitals. “If a 15-year-old has an orthopedic injury and their growth plates are closing down, they are becoming an adult skeletally, and an adult orthopedist will feel comfortable taking care of them,” Peter says. “If you have a 2-year-old with similar injuries, the growth plates are in the picture, and they will send that kid to us.”

ON STANDBY Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center’s transport team is staffed around the clock. Its 20 nurses and

20 respiratory therapists have extensive experience and advanced training to prepare for the added responsibilities they face on the highway or in the sky. “They have to have the skills to work in a pediatric intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit and be comfortable taking those skills on the road in a strange environment. They will have limited space, a limited amount of portable gases and miniature versions of monitors with a lot of battery packs,” says Karen Zahn, R.N.C., M.S.N., C.C.R.N., the transport team leader. A transport usually requires one nurse and one respiratory therapist. A second nurse may be assigned to the trip in some cases. In extremely serious cases, a physician will hit the road, too. Transport team candidates must have at least two years of experience in a pediatric or neonatal intensive care unit or a pediatric emergency department. “They have to be calm in emergent situations and serve as the hospital’s eyes and ears,” Cerny says. “They need to be very familiar with the calculation of medications and IV drips.” And, says Peter, “An aircraft can be really loud. Simple things like listening for breath sounds can be a challenge.”

Transport also is physically demanding. “When folks apply, we tell them they need to be able to lift 100 pounds,” Zahn says. “There also are stressors in the travel. In flight there are air pressure and oxygen level differences, and lots of vibration and noise. Those things make you feel tired.” Mary Fairchild, R.T., is the clinical coordinator of respiratory therapy for the transport team, which she joined in 1979, when it was a few months old. “I thought it would be fun to get out of the hospital and make some of my own decisions and save babies. I have always felt like taking care of kids was where I was meant to be,” she says.

FLY OR DRIVE Selection of the ground ambulance or helicopter is based on the patient’s condition, distance and sometimes weather conditions, Zahn says. Many patients brought to the NICU come from the high-risk delivery service at sister hospital SSM St. Mary’s Health Center. That drive takes just 15 minutes. On the other hand, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center serves some hospitals that are considerable distances away, even by air. “Cape Girardeau is 45 minutes away, Poplar Bluff is 55 minutes away and Carbondale is 36 minutes away in the helicopter,” Zahn says. “Those trips would take two-and-a-half hours by ground.” Team members maintain contact with Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the referring hospital by radio or cell phone while heading away from St. Louis. “Sometimes the process is dynamic, and the child’s condition will change by the time the team arrives,” Cerny says. Upon arrival, the team stabilizes the patient before taking off or hitting the highway. “We try to do as much as possible at the referring hospital because we are so limited in space in the ambulance or helicopter,” Zahn says.

“Flying generally doesn’t bother me,” says Stephanie Nieman, R.N. “You are in the moment and don’t have time to think about the situation or how stressful it is. You see kids at their sickest and sometimes think they are not going to make it. Then you see them walking out of the hospital and coming back for follow-up appointments. It is amazing.” “It is very rewarding when you see kids do well,” agrees fellow transport team member Michelle Cunningham, R.N. “You think of all the hard work you put into them.” Occasionally the transport team arrives in time to assist in a high-risk delivery, Cerny says. “They focus on the ABCs – airway, breathing and circulation. The team can act as an extension of our NICU for hospitals that are not used to delivering extremely low birth-weight babies.”

The team can act as an extension of our NICU...” The transporters are the center’s first line of representation across southern Illinois and Missouri. “They have to be real ambassadors for Cardinal Glennon. They are proud to wear that uniform,” Zahn says.

The team’s attention to detail includes little touches such as taking the time to comfort Moms and Dads before taking off with their precious children. “I like bringing a little bit of Cardinal Glennon to the outlying hospitals and helping families through a difficult situation,” says Lisa Ruzicka, R.N., a team member for 18 of her 25 years at the medical center. “When a family thanks me for being there, I love it.”

“CAN I SEE HIM BEFORE YOU LEAVE?” Bradley Ishum decided to enter the world earlier than expected – about four months before his expected delivery date. He arrived weighing only 1 pound and 9 ounces on the morning of February 7, when central Illinois was covered by an ice storm. He was only minutes old when the transport team landed in Breese, Ill. “We don’t know what caused my labor. We went to the hospital, and they weren’t able to stop it,” says Corinne Ishum, already a mother of two. “They called Cardinal Glennon and got a helicopter on the way. I delivered about 2:30 in the morning. The transport team came in and introduced themselves. They helped keep Bradley stable.” “I had to go into surgery. I remember them coming in. I asked, ‘Can I see him before you leave?’ They told my husband that Bradley was stable, and they would wait as long as they could,

but if something came up somewhere else they would have to leave,” she says. “When I was done in the recovery room they brought his stretcher with the incubator into the room and asked me if I wanted to touch him. I couldn’t reach into the incubator, so they scooted the bed a little closer and moved his tiny little hand so I was able to touch him for a few seconds. Then they said, ‘We have to go.’ They wheeled off and brought him here.” Corinne was discharged from her hospital and got her first good look at Bradley when he was 2 days old. “Seeing him for the first time was a shock. He was smaller than my two hands. I started crying that God was taking care of us and blessing us with such a little, bitty baby.”

I was able to touch him for a few seconds. Then they said, ‘We have to go.’ They wheeled off and brought him here.” Bradley was born at the edge of viability, says Thomas G. Havranek, M.D., one of the neonatologists who has cared for him at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “He was very close. He was extremely sick and extremely small. The average survival for 23 weeks is about 30 percent,” says Havranek, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University. “Taking care of him at the beginning was just about survival.” Over the next six months at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, Bradley would grow to 12 pounds while overcoming a number of hurdles that accompanied his prematurity. “He was considered a sick baby,” Corinne says. “He went through bouts of blood infection, pneumonia and a hole in his heart. They were getting ready to do heart surgery when they found the blood infection. When he was done with Corinne Ishum kisses Bradley as he settles in for a midday nap.

his antibiotics they checked his heart again, and the hole had closed enough that they didn’t have to do surgery.” When he was about 3 months old, Bradley received a tracheostomy, permitting breathing assistance to be delivered through a small tube placed in his neck. “Then he was able to bottle feed and snuggle and sit in the high chair,” Corinne says. “Now I bring him over here on the couch, and we cuddle and

sprawl out. He is a happy baby. He likes snuggles. And he definitely likes to sleep.” “He is doing very well,” Havranek says. “He eats quite a bit, and his breathing support is not high. We hope he may go home in several weeks.” The couch in Bradley’s room rests under a wall display of photos of his mother; father Robert; sister Libby, 3; and brother Robbie, 19 months. Sometime this fall he will go home to live with them. He will continue to require ventilator support for a while due to the lung disease caused by prematurity. “The doctors say he may not catch up developmentally until he is between 2 and 3 years old,” Corinne says. “Cardinal Glennon has been absolutely wonderful. He has come through quite a bit. When the transport team left with him, I knew he was in God’s hands, and we just had to pray and trust that God was in control.” “The people on the transport team are very good at working out there,” Peter says. “They’re delivering therapy in the back of an ambulance or aircraft, which is a real challenge sometimes. They do some pretty remarkable stuff.”

Dakota is exuberant and outgoing. Skylar has a warm smile but is typically quiet and reserved. But that game started

another lasting friendship on the fourth floor of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Dakota and Skylar visited the Bob Costas Cancer Center throughout last winter for leukemia treatments. Both were hospitalized for weeks at a time on the medical center’s fourth floor, the usual home for children and teens undergoing treatments for cancer.

“On the fourth floor, the kids stick together,” says Skylar’s mother, Na’Cole Weber. “They have a disease in common. They play together when they can. There are days when they are too sick or weak or have a headache, but they all understand that. They come by and check on each other. Even when they are just in the Costas Center for checkups, they come up to the fourth floor to see the kids who are in the hospital. That is important for them,” she continues.

child life specialist at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “It gives the patients and families extra support. The staff is a huge support for the families, too, but we don’t know what it is really like to experience cancer.” Last winter produced a large number of friendships, Ish says. “Dakota and Skylar are really tight friends, but that is not unusual. A group of kids were diagnosed around the same time and became really close. It was fun to see that happening, and it was beneficial to them. Just having somebody to hang out with helps them through their hospitalization.” “It’s good to have friends here because it keeps you busy,” Dakota says. “When Skylar was sick, I would come over to his room to see how he was doing. If my friends aren’t here, I play with the nurses. I drive them bananas, and that’s fun.”

Childhood Obesity The path to a healthy lifestyle begins at an early age.

he path to a healthy lifestyle begins at an early age, according to Nadim Kanafani, M.D., director of the Live Right! weight management program at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “The place to start is for parents to take control of the nutrition and activity environments in the home. These should not be matters of choice for children. Children don’t have the ability to make those choices.” Food preferences should be established from the earliest months of life, adds Kathryn Helling, R.D., the program’s registered dietitian. “When kids start to move from baby food to table food, that is an important time to implement healthy eating habits. If parents do not provide fruits and vegetables, and kids develop a preference for sweets, it can be a challenge to introduce nutritious foods later,” she says. “Avoiding added sugar is important, even for older infants and young toddlers. Repeated exposure to healthy food is important. Seeing Mom and Dad eat a variety of foods has an impact.” Katie Parker, 7, makes healthy choices with water and an apple for her afternoon snack.

Another key is serving appropriate portion sizes. Portions of many foods have grown larger, and children are likely to eat as much food as they are given, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Role-modeling encourages children to adopt healthy habits in nutrition and exercise. “Family meals are a big benefit,” Helling says. “If you sit down at the table, rather than eat in front of the television, there is less likelihood of eating meals that are not wellbalanced. Everyone should have the family meal. Mom shouldn’t be short-order cooking to let some kids eat something else. You can acknowledge preferences and variety throughout the week.” Snacks are fine, too, if healthy choices are available in the kitchen. “We don’t need to completely exclude the calorie-dense snacks like cookies, but we should try to minimize them,” Helling says. “Parents should decide what the kids are eating. How about an apple or peanut butter on a banana?”

A balanced diet and portion control play a large role in weight management.

Can children develop a “sweet tooth” that will influence food preferences later in life? “Probably, yes,” Kanafani says. “Sweet drinks are a huge problem. Our initial exposure to them can really determine what we continue to consume.” Misunderstandings about portion sizes also are a huge problem, Helling says. “For toddlers, a portion size is about 1 tablespoon of food per year of age. For example, at one meal, a 2-year-old should eat 2 tablespoons of chicken, 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes, 2 tablespoons of peaches and 2 tablespoons of green beans with 4 ounces of low-fat milk. “As children grow older, the greater their calorie and serving needs will be. Referring to the ChooseMyPlate.gov website will be helpful for parents in determining portion sizes,” she says. Entertaining distractions such as television, video games and cell phones are believed to contribute to the recent epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States. Encouraging kids to get more exercise often requires limitations on what pediatricians refer to as “screen time.” “Parents need to set rules about screen time and physical activity,” Kanafani says. “If your child has an opportunity to be physically active, do not let the television or computer screen impede that. If they are sitting on the couch and able to move, turn off the television.”

Take action on the dietary guidelines by making changes in these three areas. Choose steps that work for you and start today.

BALANCING CALORIES • Enjoy your food, but eat less. • Avoid oversized portions.

FOODS TO INCREASE • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. • Make at least half your grains whole grains. • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

FOODS TO REDUCE • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread and frozen meals – and choose the foods with lower numbers. • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

A secondary effect of television time is exposure to food advertising. An article in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reported that nine out of 10 food advertisements shown during Saturday morning children’s television programming are for foods high in fat,

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that entertainment media exposure should be limited to one or two hours a day during childhood and adolescence. In other words, active families are likely to raise active children and teens.

“Keeping childhood obesity at bay can be about improving the environment for parents,” Kanafani says. “Parents need to make a commitment to their own health and wellness. We generally don’t see obese kids who don’t have obese parents.” “If parents come home from work and sit in front of the television, that is what the children will learn,” says Amy Ford, Psy.D., a psychologist in the Live Right! program. “I encourage parents to model healthy lifestyle choices by being active with their kids. Don’t just send them outside – go with them so they can see that you enjoy being active and being with them.” Even in the cold winter months parents can find exercise opportunities, says Elizabeth Babusis, M.D., another member of the Live Right! team. “I love school sports programs because they offer a scheduled activity that is supervised by an adult. The YMCA and other gyms and recreation centers offer programs throughout the year. For indoor activities at home, jump rope and hula hoops are great standbys that don’t require a lot of space. Some kids enjoy being outside even when it is cold, so they can always go walking or play at the park.” “Keeping kids active in the winter is always a challenge,” Kanafani says. “The major thing is removing the number-one barrier to physical activity in our society – television. It is important for parents to know that any activity is better than doing nothing in front of a screen. Even though it drives parents crazy, free rambunctious play is therapeutic for children of all ages and keeps the energy balance in check.

“As long as children are properly dressed, especially their hands, feet, head and neck, outdoor play is OK with the temperature as low as 15 degrees,” he says. “It is normal for the winter months to be a less-active time for children. Then it is especially important for parents to limit empty calories, grazing and junk food to prevent excessive weight gain.” Family structure also contributes to good habits, Ford says. “A child sometimes will be overweight because boundaries are not being set. If a child is never disciplined, he is not going to do what he is told to do. If we can work on behavior management and food then exercise issues will fall into place.”

“If they get good grades on their report cards, reward them with activities rather than ice cream.” But, Ford cautioned, do not allow the family’s food and exercise regimens to become too strict. “Build in room for error. Make sure things are fun. We don’t want kids to think of exercise as punishment.” Ford also advises against the use of snacks and treats as rewards for good behavior. “If they get good grades on their report cards, reward them with activities rather than ice cream. Go bicycling or go to the water park this weekend. If we reward ourselves with food, that lasts into adulthood.” “The longer you wait to manage obesity, the harder it will be,” Kanafani says. “We need to tackle health, nutrition and activity at younger and younger ages. Larry Dallas, 92, benefactor of the Dallas Heart Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center

“ This gift will honor the love of my dear wife and her big heart for children,”

said Larry Dallas in 2008. That year he designated SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center as the recipient of his estate in memory of Dorothy Hennessy Dallas, who had died six years previously. The major gift was dedicated to construction of an advanced cardiac care center that holds the latest in technology and patient comforts. “We didn’t have children, but we love them so much,” Dallas said. “We both came “We both came up with the idea that we’d like to help sick children who sometimes don’t have a chance in the world... “ Left: Dorothy and Larry Dallas

They need help.” The Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center opened in January 2009. Larry died July 26, 2011, at the age of 92. He grew up in South St. Louis and spent childhood summers with an aunt and uncle on a farm in Ozora, Mo., where fields were sewn and threshed with horse-drawn implements. Monsignor Meyer embodied the spirit of SSM Cardinal Glennon Monsignor Louis F. Meyer, a leader of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center since its formation, died May 14, 2011, following a heart attack. He was 92. Meyer was a member of the last class of priests ordained by Cardinal John Glennon. In 1950, when he was only a few years out of seminary, Meyer was assigned to do fundraising outreach for the proposed Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children.

Meyer visited parishes far from St. Louis, driving on winding, two-lane roads throughout the St. Louis Archdiocese, which at that time included most of Missouri. Nearly every Sunday he took a movie screen, projector and roll of film to show people the great need for a Catholic children’s hospital to serve the region’s growing numbers of children. Meyer continued to support Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center throughout his career and

became a member of its Board of Governors in 1985. He was one of the two longest-serving members of the board and chaired the Monsignor Meyer committee on parish relations. ...continued on page G3

Upon returning to St. Louis, he found a job in the marketing department at Falstaff Brewing Co., which, at that time was the third-largest brewery in

the country. While there he met Dorothy, who was an executive secretary. Larry would forevermore call her “the love of my life.” Dorothy and Larry married in 1974. “It was a quiet, middle-aged marriage,” he said after her passing. “Everybody thinks their wife is the greatest thing in the world, and I certainly did. She was a beautiful woman.” Dallas carved a successful 20-year career at Falstaff. After the brewery’s fortunes declined, he held a few other jobs before retirement.

With the Dallas’ generous gift, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center opened the Dallas Heart Center and introduced a three-dimensional cardiac ultrasound system that allows physicians to view the beating heart of an infant or child in real time.

The highly detailed images enhance the diagnosis of cardiac malformations and the planning of corrective procedures. “It’s about the closest thing you can get to the true appearance of the heart other than what is seen at the time of surgery,” says Kenneth Schowengerdt Jr., M.D., director of pediatric cardiology at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“The equipment in the Dallas Heart Center has enabled our doctors to do advanced tests to diagnose heart problems at very early stages and in unborn babies. Being able to

find and treat these serious heart issues early significantly enhances the health and quality of life of our patients,” he says. “The center allows us to provide the best possible care to patients with heart disease in a very spacious and child-friendly environment. We are grateful for the generosity of Mr. Dallas and the honored memory of his wife. Their love of children is evident here.” The Dallas Heart Center holds nine exam rooms, an exercise stress-testing room, a physician reading room and a suite for fetal echocardiography. The fetal suite holds adult furnishings that accommodate ultrasound examinations during pregnancy. More than 15,000 cardiology tests are performed each year in the center. “The Dallas family’s incredible generosity has given the priceless gifts of health and hope to the patients and families that we serve,” says Sherlyn Hailstone, president of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “We were so honored

to know Larry, and we’re proud of the legacy that he and his wife established.” Dorothy’s second cousin, Peggy Hennessy, was a Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center nurse for more than 25 years and often told

Larry and Dorothy stories about her patients. Another relative once traveled from Cape Girardeau to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for a prenatal ultrasound that would provide a second opinion on her unborn child’s heart development. The family feared the worst, but was quickly told that the child’s heart looked and sounded fine. Larry became endeared to the medical center’s cardiology staff. When Larry discussed making a gift to the new heart center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, he was told that his generosity would justify its naming in honor of him and in memory of Dorothy. He reflected on his love for Dorothy and their love for children, and tears welled in his eyes. “All I asked for was a piece of candy, but you’ve given me the whole candy store!” he said. “This gift will give some kids a chance. I will know that we’ve made a difference.”

Monsignor Meyer ...continued from page G1 That committee conducts the important annual Glennon Sunday fund drive in all the parishes of the St. Louis Archdiocese. Meyer also cared for the children of St. Louis through 31 years of leadership of the St. Louis Catholic Youth Council (CYC). When Meyer retired as CYC director, 25,000 young people were participating in its sports activities each year. Meyer, an accomplished athlete in his youth, is a member of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame, St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, Missouri Athletic Club Hall of Fame and

the Saint Louis University Sports Hall of Fame. In 2009, he was honored with the Crystal Wagon Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Board of Governors of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. The Crystal Wagon recognizes individuals and organizations for their support of children’s issues. Recipients are enshrined upon a wall of honor in the medical center. The medical center was one of the monsignor’s favorite causes throughout his life, says Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center President Sherlyn Hailstone. “Monsignor

Wilhelmina (Willie) Luecking

n May 25, 2011, Wilhelmina Luecking, 87, died at Aviston Countryside Manor in Aviston, Ill., after a five-year period of declining health. Willie, as she was known to her friends, decided to donate her body to SLU (Saint Louis University) to help promote education and improved health for future generations. Willie was a woman of charity, not just in her giving, which was significant, but also in how she lived her life. She felt it was important to be “charitable” in how one thought and acted toward one another. This was how she lived, and it had a quiet but significant impact on those around her. Willie was a strong Catholic, a very strong Catholic, and wanted any memorial donations after her death to have an attachment to her faithful beliefs. The Bob Costas Cancer Center was chosen not only in memory of Willie but also as a cause close to the family’s heart. On October 13, 1979, Willie’s grandson, Jason Miller, was diagnosed at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). He endured three years of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, blood tests, spinal taps, and bone marrow aspirations at a time when the successful cure rate of ALL was less than 50 percent. His mother, Dolores (Luecking) Schuette, wrapped herself in the warm embrace that is the essence of Glennon care. The staff became her extended family, helping her when no one else could imagine all her family had to face. Jason lost most of his beautiful blond hair, developed a cute, prednisone round face, and sometimes even lost his normally sunny disposition. Today Jason is a happy, healthy 35-year-old

man. This spring he married Kelly (the wedding was his Grandma Willie’s last outing before her death). Together with their daughter, Trinity, they are making the house that Willie and her husband, George, built for the family — their home. This donation honors Jason and all the Glennon family that made his cure possible. As unusual as it may seem, Willie had a second grandchild diagnosed with cancer at Cardinal Glennon. Her granddaughter Sara Mode was diagnosed on Nov. 11, 1987, with a spinal cord tumor. She was also treated with chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation therapy and had numerous complications. Her parents, Pete and Pat Mode, clung to the life preserver that is the Cardinal Glennon staff, as they battled this horrendous disease. They watched as their baby grew into her toddler years and developed into a charming little girl. Sadly a cure was not to be, and on May 18, 1990, Sara Mode died at 3 years, 9 months and 16 days old. The Glennon family did not abandon the Mode family even after Sara’s death. They reached out many, many times over the years to be sure the Modes would know that Sara was not forgotten. So, this donation is in Sara’s memory as well. Please accept these donations in memory of Willie Luecking, the quiet, gentle lady we called “Mom,” as a thank you for welcoming our family into the Glennon family.

hroughout her nine years of volunteer service, Ginny Nash’s smile greeted visitors to Toy Box, the gift shop at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “She loved to talk, and she loved to laugh, and she could make anyone else laugh, too; the thing about her was that she was so much fun,” commented Patty Nash Johaningmeyer, daughter and nurse practitioner in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at SSM Cardinal Glennon. Ginny loved her family and would do anything for them. She spent every Saturday for 12 years taking her “special” granddaughter, Anna, out to lunch. By creating this tradition, it showed her commitment to loving all God’s children.

“My mom had a bad back, but she didn’t allow that to stop her. She loved Cardinal Glennon, the place, the people and the children,” Patty said. Many people at the hospital felt the loss following her death. Her service was attended by many from Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Two of the neonatologists, Dr. Sadiq and Dr. Noguchi, actually served as pallbearers. Her humor, warmth, laughter, smile and dedication made her part of the SSM Cardinal Glennon family. She felt that the people at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center were part of her own family, too. Her smile and laugh will always be remembered; she is surely missed.

The Guild continues to raise funds and awareness for SSM Cardinal Glennon. She was so very proud that Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center was the only free-standing, Catholic children’s hospital in America and said, “If we don’t support it, who will?” Georgia let her children know that she wanted any memorial gifts in her name to benefit the children of SSM Cardinal Glennon.

John R. Weber

ohn R. Weber was a successful businessman in the family construction business, Fred Weber, Inc., working his way to president and chairman of the board. During his tenure as president, Fred Weber, Inc., became the first company to recycle asphalt. John was proud of the fact that his company built more than 46 miles of Interstate 44 from St. Louis through St. Clair, Mo., and beyond. John’s love for children was reflected in his philanthropic spirit. He was a long-time, active member of the St. Louis Variety Club and served as St. Louis president, international

vice president and was a recipient of Variety Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He also started the St. Louis Variety Club Bikes for Kids program. John served on the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board of Governors for 22 years and was president of the Board from 1987 to 1988. John took a special interest in assuring all children had good health care. He lived the motto, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” He loved the fact that Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center helps all sick children regardless of race, creed or their family’s ability to pay.

his donation is made in honor of the wonderful staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit! The doctors, nurses, etc., – all the staff who cared for our great-niece, Ava Jane Ferris, last March/April were exceptional!!! Our family had never experienced one of our babies being hospitalized and having surgery. Not only did the staff do their jobs of taking care of Ava with skill and compassion, but they went out of their way to include our family in the loop with information. They let us care for Ava (hold, feed and change) whenever they could. Our family tried to stay with Ava night and day — the staff embraced us! We feel like many of the staff became part of our family for a while. All this really helped us cope with what Ava was going through. I am a nurse, and being on the other side of the hospital bed was a new experience for me. I have come away from my experience with (Cardinal Glennon’s Neonatal ICU) staff with more compassion/understanding for my patients’ families and what they are going through while their loved one is hospitalized!

hen your first born son is diagnosed with a rare life-threatening illness that has no known treatment plan or leaves no reason for hope, there is SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center to support you. My son, Christopher, was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy with Encephalitis and Central Demyelination on October 22, 2003. I cannot tell you what it is like to watch your child endure test after test after test for over a year and a half and then come up with a diagnosis that leaves you speechless. The staff at Cardinal Glennon has given Christopher and our family much hope, optimism and love since April 2002. His care team took on this unknown illness (at that time) with all the gusto and energy one could muster. They continually look for new ways to bring new hope to what seems at the time to be a hopeless situation. May God bless you for

When we were told that our 3 month old daughter had a disease process that they saw very rarely and they could not really diagnose, we had never felt so helpless and empty in our lives. Those feelings resolved quickly because the team at Cardinal Glennon never felt that way. They always communicated with my husband and I and we always knew what the plan was. Although those plans had to change many times, they were always trying hard to find the answers they needed to save our child. ur son was diagnosed with cancer only three weeks after he was born. To have just given birth to Isaac and then to hear that he had cancer was devastating. As doctors sat down to speak with us, they were very clear about our options and what was to come in language we could understand. They always made sure all our questions were answered and didn’t rush us when we had more. We were encouraged to get a second opinion and did so. The other doctors’ replies? They would implement the same treatment regimen as Cardinal Glennon and stated that Cardinal Glennon is an amazing hospital! Their first priority was our son. Their second? Our entire family.
