Washington served as keynote speaker at the formal opening on May 5, 1905. Summer school was introduced in 1905 to attract southern teachers from Tuskegee and Hampton Institute to Cheyney. The Institute used assets of $7,471 and the sale of Bainbridge Street Property to support facility upgrades and repairs to the farm. The first two new buildings were named in 1906 Humphreys Hall, Industrial

AARON WALTON

Cheyney University President

Happy Founder’s Day Cheyney Family and Friends, Welcome to Cheyney University’s 2022 Founder’s Day Celebration! Since March 2020 our University, along with the rest of our nation and world, has been navigating these unprecedented times. Guided by our two decision-making filters—what is in the best interest of our students and what helps to advance our institution—we have been able to continue to make significant progress on our transformational journey. I’m pleased to highlight a few accomplishments since our last Founders’ Day Program in February 2021. First, for the Fall 2021 semester, Cheyney University experienced the highest year-over-year growth in enrollment than all the other 13 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and was one of only two universities with an increase in enrollment. Second, Cheyney’s Administration has successfully balanced the budget for the last three consecutive fiscal years. Prior to this, the University’s most recent balanced budget was ten years ago. Third, Cheyney was able to utilize funds received from the federal stimulus package to forgive approximately $400,000 in outstanding student balances, minimizing the financial hardships students and their families have experienced because of the COVID 19 pandemic. This bold action recently attracted national media coverage on CBS Mornings with Gayle King and Nate Burleson. Additionally, our campus monetization efforts continue to gain momentum. We have the first five public-private partnerships designed to give students meaningful paid internships in emerging STEM fields, while contributing to Cheyney’s long-term financial stability by providing nontraditional sources of revenue to the University. Three additional businesses will be joining us in the months ahead. These accomplishments demonstrate our commitment to re-establish Cheyney University as a leader. As I see it, we have an obligation to carry on the legacy of those giants upon whose shoulders we stand today. Please be assured that I continue to be humbled by the opportunity to serve as the 13th President of this legacy institution. I pledge to continue to provide the level of leadership necessary to position Cheyney University as a national model well in to the 21st century. God bless you. We hope you enjoy our Founder’s Day Celebration.

International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame. • Coached training camps at the Olympic Training Center Several of his swimmers participate in USA Swimming Olympic Trials • Serve on the board of diversity in aquatics Had several of swimmers attend college on Academic & athletic scholarship. • American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coached training camps at the Olympic Training Center • Coached and represented USA Swimming in Australia and in the U.K. Was featured in a New York Times articulated on swimming, called “A new pool of talent” which was the catalyst for a movie to be made. “PRIDE” James Ellis was born in 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was a period in American social and cultural history when swimming pools were strictly segregated along racial lines and for the most part African Americans were provided very few opportunities to swim. While the Supreme Court decision of Brown vs. Board of Education officially ended segregation, most municipal swimming pools simply closed or privatized in the 1950’s rather than allow racial mixing. In Pittsburgh, there were two great pools, Highland Park and Kennywood. While Highland Park integrated, Kennywood closed. It was at the Highland Park pool where James Ellis learned to love swimming and eventually became a lifeguard at the pool despite the racial tensions that existed at the time. He swam for Winchester High School and then Cheyney State College, a historically Black college near Philadelphia. James graduated from Westing house High School in Pittsburgh, and he earned his BA Degree from Cheyney State College, and his M Ed degree from Temple University. James Ellis started coaching in 1971 at SAYRE rec center, where he wanted to change the narrative in the sport of competitive swimming. In May of 1980 he moved to the Marcus foster pool. Competitive swimming was not even a dream to the neighborhood teenagers who gathered to shoot hoops outside the Marcus Foster Recreation Center. Soon after James Ellis founded P.D.R. (Philadelphia Department of Recreation)

6

Swim Team, based at the Marcus Foster Recreation Center in the Nicetown section of Philadelphia. For 50 years, James Ellis has been introducing competitive swimming to inner city youth and their families. His coaching and mentoring have provided a healthy and stimulating environment in which the young athletes can grow and compete. It also brings together families from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Through traveling to various competitions, the program exposes swimmers to other parts of the country and different lifestyles. Today, P.D.R. is a nationally recognized competitive swim team, the nation’s best predominately African-American team, and has become a model for urban swim programs around the country. The program has produced several swimmers ranked in the top 20 in the world. In fact, city officials were ready to close the run-down rec center near downtown Philadelphia. But then, in walks James Ellis. Originally hired to help close the center, he changes his direction - and the neighborhood’s - when he discovers a dilapidated swimming pool in the building. After weeks of scrubbing and cleaning up, he invites the local kids in to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

The Teacher By Leslie Pinckney Hill Lord, who am I to teach the way To little children day by day, So prone myself to go astray? I teach them KNOWLEDGE, but I know How faint they flicker and how low The candles of my knowledge glow. I teach them POWER to will and do, But only now to learn a new My own great weakness through and through. I teach them LOVE for all mankind And all God’s creatures, but I find My love comes lagging far behind.

FANNY JACKSON COPPIN Educator and Principal Born an American slave, Fanny Jackson’s freedom was purchased by her aunt at age 12. Fanny Jackson spent the rest of her youth working as a servant for author George Henry Calvert, studying at every opportunity. In 1860, she enrolled in Oberlin College in Ohio, the first college in the United States to accept both black and female students. During her years as a student at Oberlin College, she taught an evening course for free African Americans in reading and writing, and she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1865. In 1865, Fanny Jackson accepted a position at Philadelphia’s Institute for Colored Youth (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania). She served as the principal of the Ladies Department and taught Greek, Latin, and Mathematics. In 1869, Fanny Jackson was appointed as the principal of the Institute after the departure of Ebenezer Bassett, becoming the first African American woman to become a school principal. In her 37 years at the Institute, Fanny Jackson was responsible for vast educational improvements in Philadelphia. During her years as principal, she was promoted by the board of education to superintendent. She was the first African American superintendent of a school district in the United States, but soon went back to the being a school principal.

10

On December 21, 1881, Fanny married Reverend Levi Jenkins Coppin, a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church pastor of Bethel AME Church Baltimore. Fanny Jackson Coppin started to become very involved with her husband’s missionary work, and in 1902 the couple went to South Africa and performed a variety of missionary work, including the founding of the Bethel Institute, a missionary school with self-help programs. In 1893, Coppin was one of five African American women invited to speak at the World’s Congress of Representative Women in Chicago, with Anna Julia Cooper, Sarah Jane Woodson Early, Fannie Barrier Williams, and Hallie Quinn Brown. After almost a decade of missionary work, Fanny Jackson Coppin’s declining health forced her to return to Philadelphia, and she died on January 21, 1913. In 1926, a Baltimore teacher training school was named the Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School (now Coppin State University).

You’ve impacted our (“Chanbu”) lives in so many memorable ways, as that fun loving “Big Brother”, and confidant. Additionally, you’ve been an amazing role model for all of the young swimmers of your many dynamic “PDR” - “Olympic Development Swim Teams”, and countless others. I will be forever grateful and appreciative of your inspirational support and guidance during my professional development years. “The thing I admire most about Jim Ellis aside from his down to earth, all around good guy disposition and unassuming demeanor is his indomitable spirit. His energy, gumption, grit and drive enabled him to overcome huge obstacles and propelled him to successes in areas others have not attempted. That is what made him such an impactful educator and innovative coach in a sport very few Blacks were in, let alone mastered.”

Junious Stanton ‘69

The Cheyney Founders Day recognition given to my friend “Jimmy” Ellis is well deserved! My admiration for my life-long friend of over 55 years is unconditional and boundless. His focus, fierce dedication, personal sacrifice and accomplishments as a role model, mentor, and trail blazer for the next generation of young persons, particularly African-Americans, has been extraordinary. Awards, movie, and national peer recognition for his outstanding teaching and coaching career personifies Jimmy as truly “Cheyney Made”!
