Rise and Shine While the 2021-2022 school year began masked, we could feel the weight of the previous 18 months lift as the weeks wore on. Quarantine guidelines eased, freshmen and sophomores dressed up for their first high school dance, all-school lunches resumed (minus the plexi-glass barriers) and, finally, in February, we invited our students, faculty and staff to return to campus and leave their masks at home. Throughout the changes and challenges, Cor Jesu rose to each occasion and our students continued to shine, thanks to the unwavering support of this special community. With this report, we wish to thank you for your gifts of time, talent and treasure, which have inspired us to rise to new heights each day and shine in many unique ways. LETTER FROM THE
President
Dear Cor Jesu Community, Time. Talent. Treasure. I imagine any Catholic can give some version of the homily by heart —the importance of giving what we can, where we can has been engrained in us from a young age. And in the Cor Jesu community, especially, it seems that homily has resonated. I have been at Cor Jesu now two full years, every month of which has been a little different. Yet, this community has remained simultaneously steady and nimble, ready to respond to changing circumstances and rise to the occasion. Take, for example, our Strategic Plan. We evaluate and renew our Strategic Plan every five years, creating benchmarks that are both attune to our institutional goals and sensitive to the times in which we live. In creating this plan, we have been blessed with the time and talent of two extraordinary alumnae, Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ‘88 and Lauren Schwartze Wanner ‘05. Working with consultants from Partners in Mission, these women led our community through an exceptionally engaging process, one that encouraged participation from all constituencies and demanded a depth of dialogue I had never experienced as a school leader. While we are still drafting the action items that will result from this exercise, I invite you to learn more about the process and where it stands as we embark on the next five years at Cor Jesu Academy, excited to Shine Forward (p. 26). As we worked through the strategic plan, we had moments in which we felt called to act with urgency. One was in the creation of the RISE program. RISE which stands for Readiness, Integrity, Spirituality and Empowerment, is a program for underserved middle school girls. persistence of dedicated faculty and staff. I have no doubt it will be successful considering the passion of its director (meet Galicia Guerrero on p. 8), the drive of the students it will enroll and the ongoing support of our generous community. Neither of these endeavors would have come to fruition without you. Your commitments of time, talent and treasure continue to leave me in awe. Thank you for showing up with what you can, where you are able. The numbers that help illustrate this last year provide us an objective standard. The experience of seeing you in our halls, at open houses, reunions and receptions offer more subjective insight. By both markers, we are blessed to reflect on an exceptional 12 months and offer our gratitude to those who made it possible. To those who gave in some way for the first time—I thank you. For those who continue to show up, year after year—I thank you. Your gifts are making a profound impact on the lives of the young women at Cor Jesu Academy. Chair
Dear Cor Jesu Community, As President of the Advisory Board for Cor Jesu Academy, I have loved writing this letter the last few years, reporting record-setting fundraising and market strength that has led to rapid gains in our endowment, outpacing our goals. This year, I am exceedingly grateful to share that you gave just shy of $1.5 million to our Annual Fund and Endowment—our primary sources of financial aid. In a year when we distributed a record $2.16 million in financial aid, you made a difference! Unfortunately, the market is a less loyal partner. We have felt the wave of this “correction.” We ended the fiscal year (on June 30, 2022) with an endowment valued at $9.88 million. And while I feel it’s necessary to acknowledge that the number dropped by roughly $1 million from June 30, 2021, we remain on track to grow the endowment to roughly $20 million in the next 10 years.
Thanks to your generous donations, Cor Jesu continues to thrive. We have an Endowment worth nearly $10 million when 10 years ago, it was valued at $3 million. This last year, we awarded financial aid to half our student body. Thanks to you, we continue to knock down financial barriers and hold open the doors of Cor Jesu Academy for families interested in pursuing a Catholic education for their daughters. On behalf of the Advisory Board, thank you for demonstrating your loyalty year after year, and for being a stabilizing force in the midst of an ever-changing economy. Your generosity—combined with a sound investment strategy and a dedicated faculty, staff and Board—continues to elevate this institution year after year. RISE to the Occasion In 2021, Cor Jesu Academy admitted two students from St. Cecilia Academy. Famous for its Lenten fish fry, St. Cecilia serves a largely urban, Spanish-speaking population. Though separated only by about seven miles, the parish school had never sent a student to Cor Jesu. Galicia Guerrero was St. Cecilia’s graduate support director at the time, helping students discern their high school paths.

“W
e were unsure about the process with Cor Jesu,” she remembered. “But we were excited to learn about the financial aid available.” The year those two students applied happened to be the year CJA introduced the Blessed Clelia Scholarship (BCS) Program. Inspired by donors seeking to remove barriers to high-quality Catholic education, the BCS Program covers all costs of the full Cor Jesu experience—from tuition and books to dance tickets and a junior ring. Both applicants were invited to be part of the program. Both applicants accepted, and both enrolled in the Cor Jesu Academy Class of 2025. And from that first class of Blessed Clelia Scholars, another idea began to take shape. “I arrived at Cor Jesu Academy in the summer of 2020,” said Sr. Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., president of CJA. “The world was four months into a global pandemic and in the midst of a social reckoning—one that demanded we look deep within ourselves and ask difficult questions.” For Sr. Mary Grace, one of those questions struck at the core of the school’s Catholic identity: “How are we truly honoring a cornerstone of our Catholic faith— our unwavering belief in the inherent dignity of the human person?” Motivated by that question, she began working with members of the faculty and staff, including Danielle Harrison, Director of Mission and Charism, and Katie Magee Thiemann ’81, Director of Leadership Giving.
“We aren’t doing anything to honor our mission if we create a program but neglect to support it with services,” Danielle said. Like all students, the first BC Scholars arrived at Cor Jesu with unique needs. While all were academically capable, some faced roadblocks like language barriers or gaps in their learning history. “Our goal has always been to surround the students in our building with the support they needed to thrive,” Danielle said. “But the real question was how could we help prepare young women earlier, before they become students at Cor Jesu or any other high school?” They looked to existing programs, like the TEAK Fellowship and REACH, based in the New York City area, and the Hurtado Scholars in Kansas City—all of which focus on helping students prepare for high school while still in middle school. And then they turned to a St. Louis-based organization. In 2018, the Boniface Foundation began a collaborative study on how to improve secondary and post-secondary success for students of need in values and faith-based middle schools. The results of that process highlighted academic and social/emotional interventions that could improve outcomes—if initiated in the middle school years. “Boniface believes that every student has the potential to succeed and lead regardless of their life circumstances, and every student deserves equitable access to high-quality education and transformational experiences which lead to a better future and world,” said Kelly Wetzler, Executive Director of the Boniface Foundation.

Leaning into those findings, Katie Thiemann presented Boniface with Cor Jesu’s proposal.
CJA would create the RISE program, which stands for Readiness, Intellect, Spirituality and Empowerment, with 20 rising 7th grade young women from schools in the greater St. Louis metro area. The program, launching in the summer of 2023, would be a tuition-free middle school academic and leadership development program, with the purpose of strengthening learning and development for students from lowincome level households. “The goal of the program isn’t necessarily admission to Cor Jesu,” Sr. Mary Grace said. “Rather, we want to change the trajectory of students in this economic stratum. We want to arm them with the additional academic and life skills necessary for success in a collegeprep high school, and, later, in college.” The curriculum would focus on Math and English Language Arts, two critical and overarching areas. The program would also prepare a student for the transition from her elementary school to a competitive high school, where she will encounter students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The Boniface Foundation responded with resounding support, agreeing to fund the first two years of the program and consider additional funding after that point, provided the data and metrics indicate positive outcomes in the academic performance of RISE participants.

“I thought, this sounds a lot like what I do, and what I could do!” Her interest and passion are largely personal. “I’m a first gen[eration] college student,” she shared. “And I know how difficult it can be to enter these new spaces, navigate them and get the most out of these opportunities.” Galicia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. She then went on to earn her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Equity at Saint Louis University. On August 1, she began as Cor Jesu's RISE Program Director. While she researches best practices and begins developing the curriculum for the summer program, set to launch in 2023, she is the primary point of contact for Cor Jesu’scurrent Blessed Clelia Scholars, serving as a tutor, translator and role model. “There’s a lot of wisdom I can impart to the girls,” she said. “I think it’s really important for them to see women who look like them who have walked this path, and who can help them pave their own."
One application stood out above the rest—one submitted by Galicia Guerrero.
The two students from St. Cecilia who came to CJA in 2021 may have been the first, but more quickly followed. Another two St. Cecilia students were admitted to the Class of 2026, a class that will also include the first student to enroll from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in Ferguson. And if the RISE program is the success Galicia and the administration at Cor Jesu hope to make it?

The Gift of Time
Giving to Cor Jesu has been second nature to Mary Beth Farkas ‘73 since before she was a student, and after many years of service, she just has one ask of the CJA community:
Who can donate their 1989 Cor Jesu yearbook to the Alumnae Room?
M
ary Beth was the middle of three sisters, each of whom attended Cor Jesu. Mary Jo graduated in 1971 and Mary Ann graduated in 1978. When she was in grade school, Mary Beth’s mom, Irene, would help the Sisters cook lunch for the students, and Mary Beth often tagged along to contribute—this began her giving streak. Later, as a student, Mary Beth followed in her older sister Mary Jo’s footsteps and became the president of the Library Club; she and the other members served as librarian assistants during their study periods. They would help Sr. Francine Guglielmo, the librarian at the time, organize the shelves, cards and records.
“I actually thought about becoming a librarian after working in it so much in high school,” Mary Beth noted. While Mary Beth chose a different career path (she’s been a certified dental assistant the last 49 years), she didn’t stray far from the Cor Jesu library. She joined Cor Jesu’s Alumnae Association as soon as she graduated and immediately started helping with the circulation of the of the alumnae newsletter, Traces. A few years later, she began helping her friend, Donna Elliott Fisher ‘73, organize the Alumnae Room in the library, which led to her taking over the volunteer position.

“It’s been so long that I don’t even remember the exact year I started,” Mary Beth said. Over the years, Mary Beth has earned an unofficial title: Cor Jesu Archivist. Every other Friday she is in the Alumnae Room, making sure everything is in order. She archives all the old pictures, organizes the yearbooks on display, washes the old uniforms when they need it, and circulates different items in and out of display throughout the year. And when it’s reunion time, she makes sure that the items and pictures from those reunion classes are the focal points of the room. “There are so many treasures in there. We have a jewelry box, a Cor Jesu ring, pins, trophies, old poetry writings, medals, you name it, all on display,” Mary Beth said. “It’s fun to be a part of such a rich Cor Jesu tradition.” She gives the gift of time in two ways. Mary Beth gives her time, in the present, to make sure the Alumnae Room is tidy, the displays look nice and that everything is accounted for. But she also gives the gift of time to the reunion classes each year. The treasures she keeps in that room give Charger

alumnae the opportunity to travel back in time to their high school days. She even has every Cor Jesu yearbook on display, with the exception of that mysterious missing yearbook from 1989. “At their last reunion, I asked if anyone in the Class of ‘89 would be willing to donate their yearbook to the room,” Mary Beth says. “No luck yet, but my fingers are crossed!” Even if a 1989 yearbook doesn’t turn up, Mary Beth plans to keep volunteering in the Alumnae Room for a long time. She remembers, even as a student, Cor Jesu emphasizing the importance of giving back, and that’s something she has always carried with her. “Cor Jesu taught us to take what we’re good at and use it to help in whatever way we can,” she said. “And they invited the whole family to take part. My parents were also extremely involved, and I think CJ still encourages this now, which I love.” Cor Jesu not only taught Mary Beth the importance of giving while she was a student, but the CJA community also demonstrated its importance during some of the most trying times in her

life. When her mom was dying, the Cor Jesu Sisters were at the hospital, surrounding the family in prayer and comfort. And when her younger sister, Mary Ann, was diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome, the Class of 1978 was there to help, whether it was making a meal, offering up a prayer or keeping Mary Ann company. “That’s what is special about Cor Jesu,” Mary Beth said. “The community will be there for all of your life.” Mary Ann passed away in 1999, and her daughter, Jolene Blackwood, graduated from CJA in 2002. “Jolene was the first Class of 1978 daughter to graduate from CJA, which was pretty special,” Mary Beth noted. Now, Jolene is the Vice President of Client Reporting for Optum at UnitedHealth Group and has a beautiful 9-year-old son named Carter Joseph Anthony (CJA!—not intentional). Carter knows that he has Grandma Annie in heaven, and he also has Mary Beth, who has been dubbed Grandma Bethie, here.
When he spends time with Grandma Bethie, Carter sometimes gets to visit the Alumnae Room and even attend reunions. Mary Beth loves bringing him around the school because it’s a place of comfort and care.
“The bottom line in life is that family is everything,” Mary Beth said. “I love giving my time to Cor Jesu and simply being around the CJA community, because when I look at it… Cor Jesu is family. The alumnae, young and old, are friends and sisters forever.” CORJESU.ORG | 13

Scholarships Alumnae gifts made to their respective Class Endowed Scholarships are held in the Endowment Fund in perpetuity, and only the earnings are used for need-based scholarships each year. Once a class scholarship balance reaches $11,000, five percent of the balance is awarded annually to a Cor Jesu student. Raising People Up, One Community at a Time
Izzie Hibey was raised to serve.
W
hen she was little, she and her brother would buckle into the back seat of their grandma’s car and travel door to door, helping with her Meals on Wheels deliveries. “We would run the meals up to the elderly people’s doors,” Izzie said. “I remember feeling good after I made each delivery and it was a feeling that I wanted to keep.” So she seized every opportunity to feed that passion, even under her own roof. The second of six children, she often helps with household chores, babysits younger siblings, and now drives her siblings to their many activities. “My parents and my family do so much for me that I’m happy to help out as much as I can,” she said. When Izzie got to high school, she learned even more about the importance of service and discovered a multitude of ways to give back that provided her that same good feeling she experienced with Meals on Wheels. “From the beginning, Cor Jesu taught me that service isn’t something you do to complete a requirement. Service is about finding something you are passionate about,” Izzie said. “I have learned that service should be from your heart.”

At Cor Jesu, she joined the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, an organization with four pillars, service being one of them. She also serves the school as an Admissions Ambassador and High School Night team member, and participates in Service Saturdays as well as fundraising events such as Penny Queen and Funderwear. Most notably, Izzie took charge of Cor Jesu’s volunteer program at Our Lady of Guadalupe School (OLG) in Ferguson, Mo. “I started going to Our Lady of Guadalupe during my sophomore year with Allison Fields ‘21, who was a senior in charge of the program at the time,” Izzie said. “I saw how connected Allison was with the kids there and I started to get that good feeling again. When she graduated, I wanted to get more involved and be sure the program continued.” Izzie has kept the program alive, visiting Our Lady of Guadalupe every Thursday afternoon. She has also opened the opportunity for other Cor Jesu students to join her. At OLG, she leads the students’ Adventure Time. “We usually work on craft projects, and I try to make them relevant to the time of the year,” Izzie said. “Adventure Time is the kids’ break from school and we always have so much fun. I love knowing that I can bring some joy to these students each week.” Through her service, Izzie discovered another passion.
FEATURE “I hope to be a teacher when I graduate college and volunteering at Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to confirm that for me,” she said. “I think teachers make a really important impact, and I want to be someone that impacts other people’s lives in a positive way.” While she hopes to make an impact on her students one day, Izzie is certainly not waiting to receive a college diploma to start making a difference. In addition to her work at home, school and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Izzie found another cause she cares about: homelessness. The summer after her freshman year at CJA (summer 2020), Izzie participated in the YMCA’s Change Agent program, a global leadership development program to empower young leaders as change makers in their own communities. As part of the program, participants choose a topic and write a mission statement about how they will create change within that realm. Then, they are challenged to act on it. Izzie chose homelessness, which led her to the St. Joseph Housing Initiative (SJHI).
As a faith-based organization, St. Joseph Housing Initiative’s mission is to create vibrant communities through affordable quality housing where low and moderate income families can thrive, prosper and build wealth. Since starting with SJHI in 2020, Izzie volunteers with the organization approximately twice per month, depending on the need. “I volunteer as much as I am able,” Izzie said. “Every time I go, usually on Saturdays, I feel like I’m part of the community.” The main job for volunteers is to help clean up the homes that will be purchased by one of SJHI’s clients. Work includes raking leaves, picking weeds, cleaning up trash, putting up fences, cleaning windows, scrubbing floors, and any other maintenance that is necessary to turn the house into a home.
“I remember volunteering right before Thanksgiving,” Izzie said. “We were cleaning a house for a big family, like mine, to move into before the holiday. They had five kids. At some point during the day, it hit me how important this work was. I have been blessed to always get to celebrate holidays in my home with my family, and there we were, literally preparing this house to become the home that this family would make memories in together. I realized how special that was.” Inspired—and motivated—by her experiences, Izzie plans to continue her volunteer work with Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Joseph Housing Initiative through her senior year and beyond. “I see myself working with SJHI for a long time,” Izzie said. “I want to volunteer when I’m home throughout college, and right now I’m working with the Initiative to create a Youth Board to connect more high schoolers with volunteer opportunities.” She even hopes to continue volunteering after college. “Becoming a teacher will allow me to fully invest in volunteer work during the summers when I’m off school, which is exciting to me.” No matter where she ends up, it is safe to say that Izzie will continue to make a difference, raising each one of her communities up in a very special way.
“I believe that I share Christ’s love through my service,” Izzie said. “If I can make one small change in one place, maybe it will inspire another person to make a change as well. And then it can become a domino effect of positivity in our world.”

Girls Schools Unite Alumnae Giving Challenge In June, Cor Jesu participated in the 2nd Annual Girls Schools Unite Alumnae Giving Challenge. The friendly competition took place over three days, during which each participating Catholic all-girls school in St. Louis challenged its alumnae to make a monetary donation to their alma mater in support of Catholic all-girl education. The winner was determined based on the school with the highest percentage of alumnae participation. The ultimate goal: invite alumnae to join in supporting the life-changing educational experiences each school provides for the young women of St. Louis!
CJA was proud to earn 5th place in the 2022 GSU Challenge! Our generous alumnae donated $16,587 in just three days! All the funds raised during the challenge were directed to the Annual Fund, Cor Jesu’s primary source of financial aid.

Shine Together Whether it be the location, the building, the uniforms, the faculty and staff, or the broader world around us, things have certainly changed at Cor Jesu Academy over the past 66 years. However, some things don’t change, like the mission and Charism. As the world continues to evolve, especially as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, now is an important time for our Cor Jesu community to come together to celebrate our strengths, identify new opportunities and plan for how we can sustain and grow our mission and Charism into the future. In that spirit, Cor Jesu engaged in a Strategic Planning process over the course of the 2021-22 school year. CJA alumnae, Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ‘88 and Lauren Schwartze Wanner ‘05, helped guide the most recent plan. Laurie has previous experience as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), served as Chief Executive Officer of St. Patrick Center for 5 years, and is currently an adjunct professor at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Lauren works as a partner with Bellwether in its Strategic Advising practice area. Both women are members of Cor Jesu’s Advisory Board, and both share a profound love for their alma mater—one made evident through their commitment to leading a thorough and inclusive Strategic Planning process for Cor Jesu. The results of the Strategic Plan will be published under separate cover in 2023. In the meantime, we asked if they would be willing to share their reflections on the year of work that has led to this point. They answered the call as enthusiastically as when they were asked to lead!

Below are Laurie’s thoughts on the planning process, followed by Lauren’s remarks outlining the outcomes and next steps forward.
THE PROCESS
T
he CJA Strategic Planning process was an unbelievable experience for so many of us! We had well over 100 people join the process in person through individual conversations, focus groups Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ‘88 and our retreat weekend in March that hosted 80 CJA friends! We had even more people contribute through our planning survey, gaining the insights and opinions of so many touched by Cor Jesu—students, parents, past parents, alumnae, grandparents, faculty and staff, community members and friends of this amazing school. Needless to say, we had some great information and expertise to work with. The process was incredibly robust and inclusive, and our partnership with the consulting firm Partners in Mission (PIM) was invaluable. PIM specializes in consulting with Catholic schools around the country, and they spent a great deal of time getting to know CJA, both the faculty and staff, as well as our Steering Committee. We were blessed by their knowledge and experience. Our Steering Committee, which included eight domain chairs and faculty and staff liaisons, was top notch! We could not have asked for a stronger, more dedicated group to lead the conversations in our eight domains. This group, which included members of our Advisory Board, as well as field experts connected to CJA, committed six months of their lives to completing the process and creating the plan.

to retreat participants, and gather for two days to find the most brilliant objectives to work on for the next five years. Whew—what fun we had! Most of our meetings, including our retreat weekend, were fueled by energy, love and Peanut M&Ms! Lauren and I were blessed to lead this amazing team of people who were so generous with their time, talent, honesty and optimism. We received many emails during and after the process, especially from the retreat participants. A few comments:

A
s both a Co-Chair of the Steering Committee and the Domain Chair for Student Life, I found my favorite part of the process to be our focus groups with the students. They were engaged, excited, honest and just amazing! Having the student perspective was invaluable and we were lucky to also have three students join us on the retreat weekend where they continued to share their experience, knowledge and ideas to enhance our process. Lauren and I hold Cor Jesu very close to our hearts, and not only did we help create a meaningful, achievable and positive Strategic Plan for CJA, we also established new relationships and strengthened existing ones with Cor Jesu community members that we expect to continue well into the future. In fact, Lauren and I—who did not know one another before this process—feel like we are now more than just CJA sisters, but also true friends. At the end of the retreat, alumnae, current students, and faculty and staff, sang the Alma Mater. It brought tears to many of us, including two past CJA dads who thanked us for the wonderful experience they had working with the group, and for the richness CJA has brought to their daughters and their families.

THE STRATEGIC PLANNING OUTCOMES
T
he incredible input from the CJA community throughout the course of the planning process showed just how special Cor Jesu is to so many people, regardless of whether they are a current Lauren Schwartze Wanner ‘05 student or parent or whether they graduated years ago. There were common themes across community members about what makes CJA so great. For example, we heard over and over again that Cor Jesu’s academic rigor is a tremendous strength and that the school’s mission and Charism—embodied by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—are the true heart of the school. We also heard community members ask important questions, like:
“How can we make sure that even more students can access a Cor Jesu education and thrive amid the academic rigor?” “How can we increase the diversity of our students, faculty and staff, and ensure that everyone feels like a known, loved and valued part of the community?” “How can we foster joy and connection among students, faculty and staff—especially amid the challenges that so many of us have faced as a result of the pandemic?”

aurie and I were so grateful for the members of our community who asked these and other big questions, for which there are certainly no easy answers. The bravery and thoughtfulness that this community put into reflecting on our strengths, identifying our opportunities, and planning for CJA’s future is such an amazing sign of the love that so many have for our school.
Through the amazing leadership of the Steering Committee and retreat participants, six pillars of Cor Jesu’s strategic plan were developed to respond to the questions raised by our community. They represent areas in which Cor Jesu has strengths that must be maintained and/or new needs and opportunities that must be addressed. The pillars (outlined below) give us focus and direction—indicating the areas we must prioritize over the next several years. They include: 1. Accessibility of a Cor Jesu Education, or work to ensure that every qualified student has the opportunity to access a CJA education and that the broader St. Louis community is aware of the many strengths of our school and community. 2. Discernment and Accompaniment on the Journey, or work to support each student in their development—spiritually, intellectually and social-emotionally. 3. A Vibrant Culture, or work to increase the diversity, sense of belonging and connectivity among faculty, staff and students.
4. Joyful, Student-Centered Academics, or work to innovate on our academic program to meet the needs of today’s world while offering students more intensive supports necessary to thrive. 5. A Connected Community, or work to strengthen relationship-building, communication and development of our broader community (including faculty and staff, alumnae, parents and families, and others). 6. Collaborative, Coordinated Organization, or work to develop the organizational and operational systems that help Cor Jesu run effectively.
Under each of these pillars are more concrete initiatives that lay out the work ahead.
NEXT STEPS The intensive strategic planning process lays out an exciting vision and direction for Cor Jesu’s future. And, while the planning process is over, the work is really just beginning. In the months and years ahead, Cor Jesu administration, faculty and staff—with the support of the Advisory Board—will spearhead the work that will translate the plan into action, tracking progress along the way. Laurie and I were so honored to lead this strategic planning process and to get to speak to so many of you. I know I speak for both of us when I say that we leave this experience with an even deeper love of CJA’s past and present, as well as a lot of hope for CJA’s future. We know that the success of this plan will be driven by those in the building, but it will truly take the encouragement, support and ongoing feedback from all of us. We look forward to joining you all in the work ahead!

Dear Cor Jesu Community, At the beginning of the year, a friend asked what my “word” for 2022 was going to be. Apparently, it’s some kind of modern alternative to setting a new year’s resolution. If you could sum up your hopes for the year ahead in a single word, what would that word be? As we began drafting this annual report, I found myself applying the same exercise to the past school year. What words best sum up 2021-2022 for Cor Jesu?
And in June 2022, our alumnae showcased their generosity as Cor Jesu participated for the first time in the Girls Schools Unite Alumnae Giving Challenge. Over three days, 456 alumnae gave upwards of $16,000 in increments ranging from $1 to $1,000. What a testament to the power of a collective effort, and the truth in the statement, “Every dollar counts.”
Adapt. Pivot.
I suppose the whole point of choosing a word for the year is more about setting intention and looking forward. So, what should the word for 2022-2023 be? I find myself hesitant to make a prediction. We’ve been down this road before—on the brink of normalcy with so much hope for a return to the way things were, only to be forced to adapt to the way things are. Yet, through the adaptations and the pivots, you’ve proven time and time again that optimism isn’t wasted in this community.
But we didn’t turn on that dime alone. You came with us. You showed up. You adapted. You pivoted. You continued to give. And, thanks to you, we are blessed to announce another great year. Your donations to our Annual Fund exceeded $700,000, allowing us to sustain financial aid distributions totaling more than $2 million across half our student body.
So, I think I’ll go with “Faith.” Faith on a more universal level that God will continue to guide us through further waves of uncertainty. Faith that the agility we’ve honed over the last two years will serve us well as we approach new opportunities. And faith that the unwavering dedication of this community will continue to raise us up and allow us to shine.
After two years of canceled events, we were able to host reunions again, welcoming more than 700 alumnae back to campus over three different days, making up for lost time and missed connections.

Blessed Clelia LEGACY SOCIETY
Blessed Clelia Merloni, foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, did not set out on a mission to create a new religious congregation. She set out to serve God, be that by comforting an orphan or educating an immigrant. Those bricks of service, kindness and love built her legacy.

Inspired by her words, “Love your work … fulfill it with joy … your mission is to love God and to help others love him also,” Cor Jesu Academy introduced the Blessed Clelia Legacy Society. Through this Society patrons can perpetuate the momentum of Clelia’s mission, inspiring young women to Share the Love of the Heart of Christ for generations to come. The Blessed Clelia Legacy Society recognizes those generous individuals who have chosen to provide future support for Cor Jesu Academy in their estate plans, through wills, trusts, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance policies or other means.
Bequests to Cor Jesu can be for a specific amount, for the percentage of an estate, or for all or a portion of what is left after other bequests have been distributed. Cor Jesu also invites the benefactor to determine how the funds are used. An unrestricted gift gives Cor Jesu the flexibility to assign the gift based on areas of greatest need. A restricted gift assures the dollars will be distributed according to the benefactor's wishes, be that to immediate financial aid, the endowment, capital projects or specific programs. An estate gift of $20,000 or more can carry the name of the donor or that of a loved one. What a lasting legacy to both you and Cor Jesu!
