FROM THE “AA”

Scrooge would have benefited from a fraternity experience Delta Chi...the gift that keeps on giving

A

Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is a story of a broken man whose wealth has become his only passion in life. Its main character, Scrooge, is a miserable fellow who is taught important life lessons that influence him to change his ways and become a better person. These same lessons can resonate with the Delta Chi experience today. From the first spirit Scrooge encounters, the Ghost of Christmas Past, he learns that the simple things in life, like love, friendship and laughter hold value. The Ghost of Christmas Past reminds Scrooge of the previous relationships in his life that gave him happiness. Like you ... from the connections I made in my college days to those that I’ve fostered as a “BB” and on the ABT, interfraternal relationships have made a difference in my life and have given me great happiness. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge that those he considers foolish or beneath him actually understand life better than he does. He shows him the meaning of joy and that he is missing out on the simple pleasures in life. While

many alumni think the fraternity and sorority experience had its time and place in college, the Delta Chi experience is timeless and more relevant today than ever. With the stress, anxiety and loneliness students are experiencing, the fraternity experience provides critical connection, community, and support. The Ghost of Christmas Future appears last, and unlike the first two friendly ghosts, is a frightening guy. The ghost takes Scrooge to Tiny Tim’s funeral because the family doesn’t have enough money to treat his medical condition. Much like the Ghost of Christmas Future, our chapter houses can appear scary. Just like Tiny Tim, most of our house corporations do not have the resources, especially after the budget tightening of the pandemic, to do the necessary updates to our home away from home. Scrooge sees the error of his miserly ways and wakes up Christmas morning a new man, full of life, love, and excitement to share his wealth and company with the people with whom he shares his life. Time and time again, we have witnessed Delta Chi alumni who — when asked — have awakened and given their time, talent and treasure for the benefits of young men. Happy holidays and best wishes in 2024. In The Bond,

Patrick Alderdice, 54th “AA” Ball State ’92 New Founder

Outstanding Program Award

Red Division

Georgia Tech

Buff Division

The Outstanding Chapter Program Award recognizes the exceptional programming created and implemented by our undergraduate chapters in two areas: Member Safety & Wellness and Member Education. This award celebrates Delta Chi chapter programming that enhanced the fraternal experience and positive image of the Delta Chi International Fraternity.

High Point

Mississippi State

Two members of the Georgia Tech chapter that are peer educators of VOICE, a campus-based sexual assault and awareness program, have regularly hosted workshops and planning sessions to better educate chapter members and develop safety plans for social events for the organization.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the High Point chapter enhanced its brotherhood experience by introducing two additional programs. The first initiative, led by their membership development committee, involves monthly meetings that offer valuable networking opportunities for members. The second program, organized by their health and wellness committee, features weekly movie nights providing brothers with a dedicated space to unwind.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the Mississippi State chapter designated a group of leaders within their membership for specialized training in campus-based sessions covering NARCAN, DEI, and mental health. The vital information gained through this training was subsequently shared with the broader chapter by the selected leadership. Additionally, the chapter dedicated the academic year to revitalizing both their academic and recruitment planning programs.

Denver

Kingsville

The Denver chapter took significant strides in revitalizing both their member safety and education programs during the 2022-2023 academic year. The member safety program focused on cultivating responsible drinking habits and fostering dependable social behaviors. The chapter also established a more secure and supportive environment for all members, aligning with Delta Chi’s values of character development and fostering friendship within their campus community.

During the 2022-23 academic year, the Kingsville chapter introduced the Membership Development series established to educate members on diverse professional topics, ranging from scholastic achievement and finance management to stress management, bill paying, and strategic planning. In addition, the chapter’s ABT expanded by incorporating the role of “Vice President of Peer Advising.” This individual, leveraging a background in counseling and prior professional experience, serves as an educator on both mental health and professional development for the chapter’s undergraduate members.

ZAC RAISED $85,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH IN THE CHICAGO MARATHON

E

very marathon runner embarks on their journey with a purpose. For Zac Cole, Northern Illinois ’03, purpose was derived from three areas of passion: friends and family, the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and the Delta Chi Fraternity. His decision to participate in the Chicago Marathon in 2023 would ultimately include all three. While Cole was an undergraduate, the V Foundation was not yet recognized as Delta Chi’s philanthropic partner. He gained exposure to the V Foundation during eight years on the Delta Chi Fraternity staff (in various roles from 2008 - 2016) while supporting undergraduate philanthropic efforts. He was inspired as Convention Coordinator watching those oversized checks get presented by the Fraternity year after year (now cumulatively over $2.2 million dollars) and had always hoped to contribute in his own way someday. “When I made the choice to run the marathon as a charity runner, the organization I would choose to support was a no-brainer.” Entering a marathon as a charity runner requires a different level of commitment. Prior to lacing up your shoes on the big day, you must also meet a fundraising minimum ($2,000) on behalf of your chosen charity. This guarantees you entry to the race, but also amplifies the experience since runners are exerting their physical effort on behalf of something greater than themselves. “For those who can’t.” Cole explained. “That was my mantra for not only the race, but also the training. It is simplistic, to the point, and incredibly powerful when your body tells you to give up. When I didn’t want to go out on a training run, I’d think on it and off the couch I’d go.” To aid in the fundraising effort, Cole started a campaign to “double the impact” by matching each donation from a Delta Chi toward his charity run (up to $1,000) with a donation to the Delta Chi Educational Foundation (DCEF). Twenty-seven Delta Chi alumni contributed over the course of Cole’s campaign. He was able to thank those who contributed and formally make a $1,000 dollar contribution to the DCEF on Delta Chi’s Founders’ Day this year. “As intended, the Fraternity brings you together in college, and ultimately forges these lifelong bonds.

I have the privilege of amazing connections from Northern (Illinois) and my time on the Fraternity staff. Brothers will show up for you. It’s an amazing feeling when they rush to your aid.” In addition to their donations, many Delta Chi’s shared words of encouragement that “really meant a lot” Cole said. Leading up to race day, four-time marathoner Becket Duncan, Missouri State ’13, encouraged Cole through injury during his training. Becket had his own Chicago Marathon experience with perfect race day weather (46 degrees and overcast). Beckett smashed his previous marathon record and ran a personal best of 2:52:30. It was at the halfway point through 29 of Chicago’s neighborhoods that Cole met up with chapter brother Steve Johnson, Northern Illinois ’97. Steve and Cole proceeded to pound the pavement together all the way to the finish line. “That was just awesome,” Cole said. “Steve is an accomplished marathoner and a Boston qualifier in previous years. It meant so much when he said he would be there to support me after we connected at the Delta Chi reception in Chicago hosted by International Headquarters in [spring 2023].” Several hours after the World Record was broken by Kelvin Kiptum (2:00:35), Cole crossed the finished line proudly displaying the Delta Chi flag. That moment culminated the 26.2 mile journey, resulting in $4,120 raised for cancer research! “The goal from the onset was to make sure our headline at the end of this highlighted a $65,000 donation in the fight against cancer. Thirty-two of us on Team V shattered our goal and today we sit at $85,468. I couldn’t be prouder.”

As the Delta Chi community celebrates the remarkable feat of one of its own, the story of Zac Cole’s marathon transcends running shoes and finish lines. It becomes a narrative of dedication, brotherhood, and the enduring impact that a single individual, inspired by a purpose larger than themselves, can have on a cause. Cole’s journey exemplifies that in the marathon of life, the strides we take with purpose and determination leave an indelible mark, not just on the pavement but on the lives touched along the way. Founders’ Day 2023 A Tribute to 133 Years of Delta Chi

O

n October 13, 2023, the Fraternity honored the remarkable journey that began 133 years ago when our founding fathers gathered on a Wednesday night at Cornell University. In establishing the Delta Chi Fraternity, they laid the foundation for a legacy that withstood the test of time. Our founders, in their wisdom, understood that the signing of the membership document on October 13th was not the culmination, but the commencement of a meaningful endeavor. Today, as we face unique challenges and navigate through an ever-evolving landscape, we draw inspiration from their resilience and commitment to the principles that define Delta Chi. Founders’ Day 2023 demonstrated a remarkable commitment to personal growth, education, and justice. In addition to celebrating Delta Chi’s founding, the Fraternity embarked on a mission to support the Fraternity through its annual Founders’ Day of Giving (FDOG). Raising over $258,000 for the Delta Chi Educational Foundation, brothers near and far made a profound impact on the brotherhood of a lifetime. Individuals from each chapter that lead their chapter’s fundraising efforts, represented their chapter in Founders’ Day of Giving as a Chapter Champion. This entailed asking chapter brothers to donate, sharing social media and email content, and donating. Chapter champions truly raised the bar for FDOG during the Flag Challenge. The Flag Challenge is a two-hour competition where chapters race to raise the most money. The chapter who raised the most during that two-hour window has their flag flown over Delta Chi international Headquarters. This fall, flying high above the International Headquarters as the 2023 Chapter Champion was the Auburn chapter. Flag Challenge Winner: Auburn To every brother, past and present, thank you for your unwavering contributions. It is through your efforts that Delta Chi continues to stand as a testament to the enduring power of brotherhood. As we reflect on the founding ideals, it is clear that Delta Chi is not merely an organization but a lifelong commitment. Our collective responsibility is to preserve and strengthen this commitment, ensuring that Delta Chi remains a beacon of brotherhood for generations to come.

CELEBRATIONS

High Point Chartering High Point University | High Point, NC September 2023

T

he High Point Chapter of Delta Chi officially received its charter on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The chartering ceremony, attended by Delta Chi

members, staff, and volunteers, celebrated the success of the young Chapter as well as its dedication to the values our brothers hold dear. The event marked the beginning of a legacy that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on campus at High Point.

S

ince being recognized as a Provisional Chapter in Fall of 2020, the High Point Chapter has swiftly embraced and personified Delta Chi’s mission to build better men. The brothers at High Point have participated in several community service initiatives and hosted various philanthropy events, collectively raising over $2,000 for Delta Chi’s philanthropic partner, The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Some of their service initiatives include volunteering with a local church for its Holiday for Heroes dinner, partnering with Habitat for Humanity, and donating hundreds of canned goods to the NAACP in collaboration with campus. Their philanthropic efforts include fundraisers such as a pumpkin sale in preparation for Halloween, an all-women’s football tournament in which multiple sorority chapters and nonfraternal organizations participated, and various other events taking place throughout their second ever Philanthropy Week. In addition, the Chapter has consistently maintained a GPA above 3.0, exceeding the IFC average. As a Chapter founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the brothers of High Point grew from hardship. Despite the challenges of COVID, they never failed to take advantage of the limited positives. “We were fortunate enough that High Point opened up that fall, unlike so many other schools that remained totally online,” said

Matt Koster (High Point ’22), who served as “A” during the Chapter’s founding. He emphasized, “We had 40 Founding Fathers, and we were fortunate because the 40 that we got were leaders. Any other 40 guys, and I don’t think the Fraternity [would have grown] to what it is now.” Koster continued, “Because of Delta Chi and what we started to build, that year was the first year High Point truly felt like home.” Koster expressed how proud he is of his brothers for coming so far in the three years since the Chapter’s founding. “These guys truly know what it means to be a Delta Chi and they do an excellent job passing down and teaching that to the new guys coming in,” he said. “It’s truly a special group and I know they will keep making not only our Founders but all of Delta Chi proud moving forward.” “The Board of Regents and International Fraternity can expect great things and strong leaders to come from the High Point Chapter for years to come,” said Alex Hart, Director of Growth for the Delta Chi International Fraternity. “[T]hey are well positioned to grow and adapt to build upon their early success.” To those who played a pivotal role in nurturing and guiding the Chapter to this important milestone, your Fraternity thanks you. We eagerly anticipate the continued growth, success, and contributions of the High Point Chapter to the legacy of Delta Chi. Friendship | Character | Justice | Education

NEW RLA FOR 2024 Delta Chi is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking shift in its Regional Leadership Conferences (RLCs) for 2024. In a move that promises to redefine leadership experiences, each of Delta Chi’s nine regional bodies voted in spring 2023 to transform the traditional two-day RLCs into an immersive Regional Leadership Academy (RLA) format, marking 2024 as a year of unparalleled growth and development. For years, Delta Chi’s nine governing Regions hosted annual leadership conferences, providing active and alumni members with two days of opportunities to connect, engage in professional development, undergo officer and leadership training, and participate in regional business discussions. The newly unveiled RLA format will elevate this experience, offering Delta Chi members over three and a half days of intensive leadership training. Scheduled over the Martin Luther King Weekend (January 12-15, 2024), chapters will partake in their designated RLA, immersing themselves in a unique brotherhood experience. The Academy kicks off on the evening of Friday, January 12, and concludes midmorning on Monday, January 15, 2024. Consolidated into four concurrent Regional Leadership Academies, 2024 RLA’s are hosted in the following locations: - Regions I & II - Reno, NV - Regions IV & V - Kansas City, MO - Regions VI, VII, & IX - Philadelphia, PA - Regions III & VIII - New Orleans, LA

The 2024 RLAs are set to include: - The “A”s’ Academy experience - Leadership training for all lettered officers - Recruitment training for non-lettered officers and recruitment chairs - Delta Chi’s Dale Carnegie Scholar Program - Dale Carnegie training for all participants - Recruitment training for all participants - Risk Management training for all participants - Delta Chi Ritual - Brotherhood activities - Regional business sessions Delta Chi’s transition to the Regional Leadership Academy program for 2024 represents a significant milestone in its commitment to delivering unparalleled leadership experiences. By consolidating RLCs into these dynamic RLAs, Delta Chi aims to empower its chapters and members, providing intensive leadership training, recruitment strategies, professional development, and a strong emphasis on brotherhood. Anticipation is high for the 2024 RLA, promising a weekend of growth, connection, and empowerment. Delta Chi remains dedicated to fostering excellence and equipping its members with the tools needed for personal and leadership success. For more information about Delta Chi’s RLA program, please visit www.deltachi.org/RLA.

The four Regional Leadership Academies will feature a comprehensive program, covering leadership development, recruitment training, professional development, brotherhood activities, and Fraternity business sessions. This groundbreaking shift allows chapters to better prepare for recruitment initiatives, enhance executive board experiences, and refine interpersonal skills.
