A message from our leadership

None among us could have foreseen the historic events of this past year. While everyone around the world has their story, their struggle, and their cherished silver linings, we at French Hospital are so proud to be among those at the center of this pandemic, working every day to serve this community. And through all of the challenges of 2020, what bright spot has emerged? Heroes among us. Heroes like our caregivers, who every day step up and prioritize care for those beyond themselves. Heroes like our community members, donors and volunteers, who selflessly think beyond their own needs to serve others. And what have we learned about the positive impact of philanthropy during a pandemic? For one, the culture of carism that puts others first during times of uncertainty is palpable today more than ever. We call it the “French Factor,” and it is the Central Coast’s own expression of humankindness.

Alan Iftiniuk President and CEO

We have reaffirmed that the Beyond Health movement, our vision to transform health care on the Central Coast, is vital to the future of our community. 2020 has taught us that particular components of the Beyond Health movement will be critical: • Single-patient rooms in a new four-story patient care tower • New world-class technology, specialists and services • A family-friendly campus that encompasses a holistic approach to healing the body, mind and the spirit And our generous community has proven—even during times of crisis—that they are with us on this mission to provide San Luis Obispo County the highest quality health care that our friends, families, colleagues and neighbors deserve. With double the capacity, French Hospital will be prepared so that no matter what the future holds, our caregivers can continue to provide world-class compassionate care, right here at home.

Beyond Health: Your New French Hospital

Bringing world-class care to our community

support this crucial initiative and we are nearly half way to our goal.

At French Hospital, we are dedicated to always thinking about our patients first. That’s why we launched the Beyond Health campaign, which will bring Your New French Hospital to the Central Coast. We recognize the immediate need to continue growing with our community’s everchanging health care demands and go beyond expectations to deliver world-class care.

Our vision is that French Hospital’s family-friendly campus will set the standard for excellent outcomes for everyone in San Luis Obispo County. So that no matter where that next turn takes you, we can provide more of the compassionate care you expect and deserve.

Our hospital was built more than 40 years ago, when our community was smaller and the practice of medicine significantly differed from today. As people live longer and patients become more critically ill and medically complex, health care is moving to a patient-centered focus with an emphasis on wellness, prevention and the intent to create a more integrated health care system. Your New French Hospital will offer patients a transformational care experience, bring new capabilities to the hospital, attract new talent and anchor the hospital’s campus as a core community place for healing and wellness. The $130 million project will break ground in 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2024. The French Hospital Foundation is currently raising $30 million to

4

Your New French Hospital includes: • New four-story, 85,000 square-foot Patient Care Tower • 56 single-patient rooms designed to increase privacy, comfort and infection control • New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 16 private rooms for our tiniest patients • Intensive Care Unit expansion with 10 additional suites • New lobby and Welcome Center with an expanded café and kitchen • Advanced technology and services • Holistic grounds, greenspaces and an interfaith chapel

Influences of COVID-19 Pandemic on Your New French Hospital

• Emphasis on serene environments will improve healing and staff resiliency

As we find ourselves navigating a global pandemic that has affected our local community, we are reminded of the importance of the Beyond Health movement. During this trying time, our resources have been pushed to their limit, and French Hospital has been forced to rethink the patient care experience.

• Expanded hospital access will help more disadvantaged patients and families

Currently, we operate with two to three beds per room, but COVID-19 has underscored the need for a new level of infection control. This is just one of the many valuable lessons that the pandemic has taught French Hospital, lessons which will continue to drive hospital design and implementation for Your New French Hospital:

Together, we can go beyond what is expected of a regional hospital and provide the world-class care our community deserves.

• Single patient rooms are best practice to protect patients from infections

During the course of each of our lives we will experience hospital care in times of crisis, sorrow or joy. When the need for medical care arises, we deserve the highest level of safety, privacy, convenience, access, and humanity.

How can you go Beyond Health? • Give to the campaign by mail, phone or online • Establish an endowment for long-term support • Celebrate someone with a gift in their honor

• New advanced medical technologies will allow more local treatment

• Create your legacy with a planned gift

• Greater critical care capacity can handle an influx of patients

• Spread a culture of carism around the community

• Become a volunteer and give comfort to others

• Advances in the delivery of care will enhance patient outcomes

Bill and Cheryl Swanson transform health care and spirituality for our community

Bill and Cheryl Swanson have a long history of philanthropy in the San Luis Obispo community, which is a special place to them both. Bill and Cheryl both grew up in Los Osos, and Bill earned his industrial engineering degree from Cal Poly. Now retired as the Chairman and CEO of Raytheon Company, he and Cheryl have returned to San Luis Obispo and wish to see it continue to thrive. With this in mind, the Swansons made a transformational gift of $2.75 million to the Beyond Health campaign. “We are pleased to be able to help support French Hospital in their mission of advancing medical care and holistic services. Our gift touches both of these important goals for our community,” says Bill. One of the core campaign initiatives in the Beyond Health movement is to expand our holistic practices, healing the mind, body and soul. As part of this, French Hospital wants to create an inclusive and diverse sanctuary for patients and their families to find solace during what can be the most pressing

6

moments in their lives. Thanks to the generosity of the Swanson family, the hospital is building on its campus a serene interfaith chapel—Swanson Family Chapel. The chapel will accommodate up to 65 people, as well as patient gurneys, and will feature a majestic bell tower and custom stained glass. Construction is slated to begin in early 2021. Another key campaign initiative in the Beyond Health movement is to enhance services and improve technologies. This is something that Bill and Cheryl both find essential to elevate the quality of health care for the SLO County community. Thanks to their support, the Swanson Robotic Surgery Program offers surgeons superior visualization, enhanced dexterity and unmatchable precision compared to most traditional approaches. We thank the Swansons for their generous support and dedication to providing world-class health care in a holistic setting for our community.

Local families invest in the future of French Hospital

Bob and Debbie Wacker

John and Tracy Ronca

Bob and Debbie Wacker have a special understanding of the need for supporting their community hospital. As a grateful former patient, Bob’s positive experience at French Hospital inspired him to ensure that the local community has access to advanced health care, leading the Wackers to donate $350,000 to the Beyond Health movement. As Co-Chair of the Beyond Health Campaign Cabinet and Chairman and Partner at Wacker Wealth Partners, he also understands the important impact that health care can have on local businesses, the economy and the overall community. Debbie has volunteered at French Hospital for 32 years, spending several hours a week helping patients and visitors, giving her a unique insight into the needs of patients.

As lifelong San Luis Obispo County residents and friends of French Hospital, John and Tracy Ronca are making a positive impact on their beloved community by naming the Ronca Family Plaza with a generous gift to support the Beyond Health movement. Former chair of the French Hospital Community Board of Directors, John has had longstanding ties to the hospital—including growing up with founder Dr. Edison French’s and Dr. George French’s family. Tracy also served on the Foundation’s Golf and Tennis Tournament Committee for several years. As active members of the community, John and Tracy have contributed countless hours of their time and expertise, and welcomed scores of others to get involved in the life of the hospital.

“It’s important for us to be invested in our community hospital, to make sure that we have great health care here locally, when we need it. We want the best care for our family, our businesses and our community, and supporting French Hospital is our way of doing that,” says Bob. The Wackers’ generosity is recognized with the naming of the Wacker Family Auditorium in the Copeland Health Education Pavilion.

“Tracy and I are proud to provide a space where staff, patients and families can find peace and serenity during potentially challenging—and joyful— times. Our community deserves the very best care, and a healing environment which captures the unique surroundings that we are so fortunate to call home,” says John. The Ronca Family Plaza will welcome visitors and patients to the new four-story Patient Care Tower that will be added to the hospital’s campus as part of the Beyond Health movement.

We are in this together Coming together in the face of COVID-19 2020 was truly a year like no other. The onset of the global pandemic has impacted us all in ways large and small. Life does not look like it did at the start of 2020, and no one knows that better than health care workers. When the coronavirus pandemic arrived on the Central Coast, our community, the hospital and caregivers responded in true Central Coast fashion—coming together in a way that has made us all even more grateful to call this special place home.

“We have been humbled by the outpouring of heartfelt gratitude and support that our community has shown our frontline caregivers and French Hospital during COVID-19.” —Alan Iftiniuk, President and CEO

French Hospital responded to the pandemic swiftly, ensuring that the necessary supplies and equipment were available to care for our patients and protect our staff. The Foundation, in turn, reached out to our community with requests for support. Our community responded with an outpouring of support for our frontline workers, donating medical supplies, meals and more. Since March 2020, over $360,000 in donations have been received, including personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, suits, goggles and more. Donated funds have supported the purchase of additional PPE and equipment, ensuring that French Hospital remains fully prepared to combat COVID-19.

Health care heroes During the pandemic, we’ve seen our hospital staff rise to the occasion in many ways, repeatedly demonstrating the dedication and passion they have for caring for their patients and our community. The pandemic has placed added stress on an already demanding profession. Despite this, our staff has rallied and made the best of a difficult situation, adjusting to a new reality of increased safety protocols while continuing to focus on providing the compassionate care for which French Hospital is known. Heroes. That is what we have seen emerge during the COVID-19 pandemic. And those health care heroes are incredibly grateful for the support of our community and people like you. “The overwhelming support of our community has been inspirational and motivational for all of our staff,” says Cecilia Azziz Baumgartner, RN, the Director of Emergency Services at French Hospital. The gratitude that our community has expressed through notes, meals, coffee and words of encouragement has been a lifeline for our health care heroes. The Foundation expresses our sincere gratitude to our community for your support during this challenging time, as well as our admiration for the devotion of our health care heroes. THANK YOU.

“It strengthens us and lifts our spirits knowing that our community is behind us during the pandemic.” —Cecilia Azziz Baumgartner, RN, Director of Emergency Services

Donors support the Emergency Support Fund during COVID-19

Carol and Les Moss

Linda Asprion

Impressed with her own positive experience as a patient in 2018, Carol Moss decided to give back to French Hospital in several ways—by becoming both a hospital volunteer and a donor. As a hospital volunteer, Carol learned even more about the dedication of the hospital staff toward patients, and her admiration for the hospital and staff grew.

Linda Asprion has been an avid supporter of French Hospital for the past several years, supporting the hospital wherever she felt the need was the greatest. When the pandemic hit, she knew that she wanted to help however she could to support the hospital during COVID-19.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Carol and her husband, Les, wanted to help ensure that French Hospital had everything needed to care for our community. “We wanted to do something to help mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic,” says Carol. “For us, it was logical to support French Hospital’s increased efforts during this unprecedented time by supporting the Emergency Support Fund.” Carol and Les made a generous gift to the Emergency Support Fund, established by the Foundation in March 2020 to help with the extraordinary costs incurred by the hospital due to the pandemic, as well as to support the health and well-being of our frontline caregivers.

10

After talking with Foundation staff and finding out that the hospital needed to purchase additional ventilators in preparation for the pandemic, Linda decided to fund the purchase of ventilators. “I knew my gift to the Emergency Support Fund would directly help local COVID-19 patients,” says Linda. “That’s why it was so important for me to help French Hospital to the best of my ability during the pandemic.” Linda’s support enabled the hospital to quickly purchase the additional ventilators needed to care for local patients, ensuring that French Hospital is fully prepared to care for critical COVID-19 patients. Learn more about the Emergency Support Fund—scan the QR code with your smart phone camera.

Serenity Room: An oasis of calm for caregivers The nature of providing patient care often places stress on caregivers, and during any health care crisis, such as the current coronavirus pandemic, this stress is further amplified. With this in mind, French Hospital created a Serenity Room for caregivers and hospital staff—a calming, private space designed to provide the opportunity for relaxation, self-reflection and self-care. Stephanie Walczuk, RN (below), Assistant Nurse Manager for French Hospital’s Telemetry Department, recognized that staff needed additional support during COVID-19. She spearheaded the effort to create an oasis of calm for caregivers in order to foster resiliency, manage stress and maintain positivity. “Being a nurse or physician can be stressful during regular times, but I saw the added stress that the pandemic was placing on our staff,” says Stephanie. “I felt that if we had somewhere to go that we could regroup and focus on taking care of ourselves for a

moment, it would be so beneficial for us and, as a result, for the care of our patients.” Thanks to her vision, the support of French Hospital administration and donor generosity, the new Serenity Room offers a much-needed refuge, allowing caregivers to manage stress and improve their wellbeing. The Serenity Room provides the equipment, tools and relaxing space needed for self-care and self-reflection during break times. The room features a soothing environment, a body movement area for yoga or stretching, a meditation area, a massage chair, an aromatherapy area and a serenity area for journaling, self-affirmation and more. Since opening in April 2020, the Serenity Room has become a true oasis for staff and is highly used. Staff continue to express gratitude for the space and to the many donors who contributed items and funds to support its creation.

Heroic nurses care for coronavirus patients in New York

French Hospital is continually humbled by the compassion and care our staff demonstrates every day with every patient. During the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen our staff go even further than ever before. This dedication to caring for others was exemplified at the beginning of the pandemic when three brave nurses from French Hospital volunteered to go to New York to help care for countless COVID-19 patients in a state that was in dire need of medical support. “I was hearing how bad the virus was hitting hotspots like New York City,” says Jessi Norris, a Registered Nurse who works in French Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and Post-Anesthesia Recovery Unit. “Being a critical care nurse, I knew that I had the skills that these hard-hit cities needed.” In mid-April, Jessi and two other nurses, Devon Everson and Elissa Molfino (above, left to right), called FEMA-hired staffing companies to inquire about helping. Shortly after, they were headed to New York. Jessi, Devon and Elissa were housed in hotels where command centers had been set up and were assigned to work in a 100% COVID-19 hospital. Their shifts were chaotic and exhausting. After 15

12

hours a day in full PPE, the nurses returned to their hotels to decontaminate and rest before their next shift. There were many difficult moments caring for these critical COVID-19 patients, but, occasionally, there would be good moments too—any time that a patient had their breathing tube removed and was able to breathe on their own without a ventilator, it was a cause for celebration. Overall, Jessi says that she had a very rewarding experience in New York. “It was challenging, but it showed me what I am capable of and made me proud of my profession.” After spending several weeks in New York and quarantining on their return, Jessi, Devon and Elissa returned to caring for patients at French Hospital. During these uncertain times, caregivers like Jessi, Devon and Elissa are true heroes. We thank everyone in our community who is on the frontline providing extraordinary comfort and care for patients and their families. To Jessi, Devon and Elissa—we applaud you for your amazing act of selflessness and your astounding dedication to caring for others. We are so proud and honored to have you as part of the French Hospital family.

Leaving a Legacy Reese Davies and Vicki Mazzei-Davies Reese and Vicki are connected to French Hospital in many ways. As a student at San Luis Obispo High School in the 1960s, Reese watched the construction of French Hospital on the Johnson Avenue site. He later served as a Foundation Board Member for ten years. Vicki, a Registered Nurse, moved to San Luis Obispo in 1981 and helped launch the hospital’s award-winning cardiac program. Both continue to make French Hospital their hospital of choice, both for their medical care and for their volunteerism. Reese and Vicki made a significant gift to French Hospital as part of their estate plan. “We both feel strongly that giving back is so important to our community’s future. We are proud to support and be connected to French Hospital, knowing that the hospital will be there in the future for our children and grandchildren,” says Reese.

New Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine opens

In February 2020, just prior to the coronavirus pandemic reaching the Central Coast, French Hospital opened the new Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine. An extraordinary donation of $5.5 million from Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer supported the much-needed expansion and modernization of the hospital’s emergency services. Over the past several years, French Hospital experienced a significant increase in emergency room visits in an outdated and undersized facility built over 40 years ago. To continue providing the care the community deserves from French Hospital, an expansion was needed. The new facility was designed for a high volume of emergency patients with a commitment to comfort, safety, efficiency, holistic healing and privacy, utilizing best-in-class modalities and technologies. The new Emergency Center more than doubled the space of the previous emergency department and features 18 private treatment rooms, compared

14

to the five-bed ward and semi-private rooms that previously existed. These private treatment rooms are especially timely in the midst of the current pandemic. Specialized rooms are designated for critical care, geriatric patients, trauma, infectious disease isolation, pediatrics and orthopedic emergencies, as well as fast-track beds for patients with less urgent conditions and specialized exam accommodations for patients experiencing behavioral health-related issues. It also provides a sizable lobby area for families, essential triage rooms and a centralized nurse’s station with sophisticated monitoring capabilities. The former Emergency Department space was recently remodeled to accommodate advanced imaging equipment dedicated for emergency patients. The Foundation and hospital express sincere gratitude to the Oppenheimers for their incredible act of generosity that allowed the new Emergency Center to come to fruition.

What does it mean to be not-for-profit? While for-profit organizations distribute surplus revenue to shareholders or owners, not-for-profit organizations invest these earnings back into their organizations to further achieve their mission and goals. As a not-for-profit hospital, French Hospital Medical Center reinvests profits back into the hospital and into our community by providing community benefits programs and charity care. 100% of your donations benefits the cause French Hospital Medical Center covers all Foundation operating costs, which means that donor funds are never used to pay for any administrative costs. Because of this, 100% of your donation stays local and benefits our community by going directly to where it is needed most—patient care, programs and services. 19
