Veterans Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Oshkosh Northwestern Media’s Salute to Veterans, our annual keepsake edition. This guide contains two sections: One for individual tributes to veterans submitted by veterans and their families honoring their service; and the other a listing of veterans from Winnebago County who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their country.
The sections are designed to coincide with the two federal holidays for veterans: • Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday
in May and commemorates the men and women who died while in military service. Pay tribute to the U.S. men and women who died during military service by observing a national monument of remembrance with a minute of silence at 3 p.m. Monday, May 26. In honor of the fallen soldiers, a Reading of the Names Ceremony will begin at 7 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Memorial Square at South Park. The Oshkosh Patriotic Council Memorial Day Procession and Services start at 9 a.m. at the Winnebago County Courthouse; procession down
Algoma Boulevard to the Riverside Cemetery follows.
• Veterans Day, which will be observed on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. On Nov. 11, 1947, Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Ala., to recognize veterans of all wars. This celebration led Congress to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize veterans of all U.S. wars.
As we reflect this weekend to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen, we do so with the knowledge that thousands of our fellow citizens find themselves in harm’s way in the call of duty. Our thanks to the families of veterans who took the time to submit photos

SALUTE TO VETERANS CLIFF HAWLEY Hometown: Oshkosh Branch of service: U.S. Army Where did veteran serve: Mexican Conflict CLIFF HAWLEY in 1916 and in France during WWI Service highlights: Cliff was so very proud of his association with the 32nd Army Division and he spoke of that often and wore a hat that was DAVID HAWLEY part of the 32nd. Both he and my mother-in-law were active in the VFW until they were not able to any longer due to age. Cliff was appointed DONALD HAWLEY to be the first veteran representative in the employment office in Oshkosh in 1944. He was also a member of the Last Man’s Club. He was honored for being a member of the JERRY HAWLEY American Legion for over 60 years. He received the Purple Heart and a medal and bar for Aisne-Marne and other service bars and medals. KENNETH HAWLEY Cliff’s love of his country and pride of the military soldiers of any kind was lonely surpassed by the pride he had for his 14 children; six of them were sons who all served in the military. Richard, RICHARD HAWLEY Donald and Wayne were in the Navy, Jerry and David were in the Army and Kenny was in the Marines. Cliff and Carrie’s greatest sorrow came when their youngest WAYNE HAWLEY son Kenneth was killed by a land mine, one week before leaving Vietnam. He was killed while leading his men into battle and was hit by a shell fragment. The tradition of Cliff continues on as his great grandchildren now serve their country. Service highlights: Ray was the First Class Petty Officer serving on a minesweeper which sailed along the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida. The objective was to detect explosives (mines) which the Germans were suspected of planting in the shipping lanes. It was vital to keep the shipping lanes open during WWII for commerce and for the transport of weapons and ordinance to the warfront in Europe. Sunday, May 25, 2014 Elmer H. Wokosin Hometown: Oshkosh, Wis. Branch of service: US Army Years of service: 6 years Where did veteran serve: New Guinea, South Pacific Service highlights: This photograph was taken at Camp Beauregard, LA in November of 1940. We had just returned from the drill field when a buddy took this photo. In the picture I am wearing a WWII helmet. Army personnel did not receive the new helmets until our units shoved off for Australia April 22, 1942. In the larger picture I was also holding a WWI Springfield bolt action rifle and bayonet. We were part of the Wisconsin National Guard, 32nd Red Arrow Division. There were three units from Oshkosh; Company H, a heavy weapons company; a Service company, my unit; and the 127th Infantry band. President Roosevelt federalized all the National Guard units in the entire country to become the Army of the United States just 14 months before Pearl Harbor. I was one of the first American Troops to stop the Japanese advancement on Australia. When the 32nd Wisconsin Division was mobilized, one our units from Janesville, the 32nd Tank Company, was sent to the Philippines. They were captured in early 1942 on Baton and spent 3.5 years in a Japanese prison camp. Our campaigns in both wars are all listed on the monument in the Red Arrow Park.
