SALUTE TO VETERANS

Salute to

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Veterans Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Oshkosh Northwestern Media’s Salute to Veterans, our annual keepsake edition. This guide contains two sections: One for individual tributes to veterans submitted by veterans and their families honoring their service; and the other a listing of veterans from Winnebago County who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their country.

The sections are designed to coincide with the two federal holidays for veterans: • Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday

in May and commemorates the men and women who died while in military service. Pay tribute to the U.S. men and women who died during military service by observing a national monument of remembrance with a minute of silence at 3 p.m. Monday, May 26. In honor of the fallen soldiers, a Reading of the Names Ceremony will begin at 7 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Memorial Square at South Park. The Oshkosh Patriotic Council Memorial Day Procession and Services start at 9 a.m. at the Winnebago County Courthouse; procession down

Algoma Boulevard to the Riverside Cemetery follows.

• Veterans Day, which will be observed on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. On Nov. 11, 1947, Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Ala., to recognize veterans of all wars. This celebration led Congress to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize veterans of all U.S. wars.

As we reflect this weekend to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen, we do so with the knowledge that thousands of our fellow citizens find themselves in harm’s way in the call of duty. Our thanks to the families of veterans who took the time to submit photos

and information. Finally, a profound thanks to the men and women who answered the call to serve our country. Great care has been taken in producing this salute. Please report errors and omissions to oshkoshnews@thenorthwestern.com.

This Is An Exciting Time For The Museum!! Now that the building is complete, temporary exhibits have been installed and work continues to develop, design and install long-term and permanent exhibits as well. You can help us with this and aid us as we seek to fulfill our mission by making a donation, purchasing a membership, or by honoring someone special with a Memorial Brick Purchase.

MEMORIAL BRICKS When you purchase a memorial brick you are honoring a Veteran in a special way. The brick becomes a lasting tribute to a family member or close friend. The “Memorial Brick Plaza” surrounds the flags of all five branches of our armed forces. The flags and the Memorial Plaza have a special place on our museum grounds. The memorial bricks are a testimony and a thank you for service to our country. They are a way for you, future generations, and all visitors to stay connected to that special veteran in your life. The Memorial Brick Plaza is reserved for veterans only. Each memorial brick comes with a lifetime warranty.

We were part of the Wisconsin National Guard, 32nd Red Arrow Division. When the 32nd Wisconsin Division was mobilized, one our units from Janesville, the 32nd Tank Company, was sent to the Philippines.
