The Great Indoors

It’s hard to believe that just a month ago, Las Vegas temperatures were still in the double digits. But here we are, and it’s o cially summer in Sin City. That means the pools will be packed, pedestrian tra c on the Strip will be moving a bit slower than usual, and your super-chilled hotel room is as important a destination as the Bellagio fountains. Odds are you will be spending most of your time indoors this week, but luckily you’ve got us to direct you to the best indoor activities!

Let’s begin with restaurants. This week’s issue has lined up a few of the better options, depending on your appetite. For steak lovers, Carversteak not only has great cuts, but great tables no matter where you sit (“Pick Your Spot,” p. 28). Fans of this fiery celebrity chef will love his newest spot in town—Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay at Harrah’s (“Best Bites,” p. 18). And this week’s Friends with Benefits feature ( p. 26 ) focuses on Beau Huizinga, the beverage manager for one of the best Latin restaurants on the Strip, Chica at The Venetian.

How about a great live show? Comedian Bert Kreischer—and several of his friends—are ready to bring the funny with the Fully Loaded Comedy Festival (“Plenty of Laughs,” p. 32). Country superstar Miranda Lambert continues her Velvet Rodeo residency at Planet Hollywood (“Triple-Crown Country,” p. 34). Barry Manilow closes in on Elvis Presley’s performance record at Westgate Las Vegas (“Looks Like He Made It,” p. 38). And ’70s hit-making group Ambrosia brings its biggest hits to Golden Nugget (“How Much You’ll Feel,” p. 20).

Looking for family activity that costs you nothing? You’ve got to check out the summer installation at the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (“A Natural Connection,” p. 36 ).

Enjoy the great indoors this week!

Feel the Beat

Enjoy exciting—and unpredictable— entertainment in artistic production

Welcoming a bit of chaos in your night’s plans from time to time makes the best stories for your friends at home. And you can intentionally infuse your night out with a heavy dose of nonsense when you score tickets for the Blue Man Group, the long-running show that seamlessly combines tantalizing tunes with silly shtick to create the perfect 90 minutes of entertainment.

Even before the show starts, you know you’re in for a great time as comedic messages and instructions are sent to the audience via word-scrolling screens on either side of the stage. Just as the audience is getting into the bit, the curtains open and the Blue Men begin the pounding percussion they’re known for. The musical elements of the show satisfy even when they’re not being made with traditional instruments. If anything, this show, with its ingenious inventions, proves that anything can be used to make melodies.

Auditory elements aside, this show also uses a full range of visual elements that tie it together. You can count on seeing the neon paint these performers are known for, splattering from drums, PVC pipes and even their mouths, but you’ll also see impressive lighting, innovative use of set pieces and physical comedy–lots of the latter.

As nonspeaking performers, the group often relies on facial expressions and movement to carry across their punchlines, and they do it effortlessly. Their mimelike movements, mixed with their curious exploration of the stage and theater, transforms the Blue Men into lovable yet confusing characters, which makes the absurdity that ensues onstage exceptionally enjoyable.

Taking time to shame latecomers as the performers pause for them to find their seats, creating art by spitting edible paint onto canvases, and calling a volunteer onstage for a not-so-appetizing meal of Twinkies are just a few bits of buffoonery that the Blue Men have in store.

And if the show on its own is not enough, a VIP experience includes premium seating, a snack and beverage, backstage tour, swag bag and a chance to meet the Blue Man Group. –Em Jurbala

Your Kind of Night

Country superstar returns to his Strip residency

When you start seeing Stetsons and Tony Lamas fill Resorts World Las Vegas, you’re in luck, because it might mean that Luke Bryan is back for another night of his Vegas residency, Luke Bryan: Vegas

“I have enjoyed so many milestones in my career, many of them were too big to even dream,” Bryan told Las Vegas Magazine. “I am truly out there loving every moment I’m onstage and, as long as I am connecting with the fans, I plan to keep doing it.”

It goes without saying that the man who has 30 No. 1 singles obviously plays great tunes (with the help of his brilliantly talented band, of course.) His residency setlist takes you from album to album, ensuring you’ll hear plenty of your favorites, but what makes this residency exceptionally special is the singer’s oh-so-enjoyable personality. Seriously, have you heard this man giggle? It’s infectious.

When Bryan pauses between tracks, each audience member is engaged, never knowing what endearing anecdote is about to come. Relating tales involving his mother, his Vegas adventures and his musical inspirations, the singer fosters a unique connection with the crowd. It feels like you’re hanging with a good friend, chatting over a few beers.

In a particularly intimate bit, a glowing grid of lights lowers, separating Bryan and his vibrant blue piano from the rest of the stage. As the once-animated stage behind him goes dark, the room mellows, with the warm shine carrying comfort through the theater.

“My favorite moment in the show is sitting down by myself to play the piano,” Bryan said. “It’s a great time for me to really feel the energy in the room and go off-script a bit if I want.”

Bryan’s excitement for this moment is felt. Taking his seat at the piano, the music man takes the time to simply enjoy a few melodies with his captivated listeners, even entertaining some audience suggestions. His love and appreciation of music fills the room.–Em Jurbala

Making Waves

Whether you’re a fan of the 1997 Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet flick or you’re simply curious about the 1912 catastrophe, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor offers an understanding of what it was like during that fateful journey.

Stroll from room to room where you’ll find more than 250 items that have been recovered from the sunken vessel. The collection continuously evolves, too. Some items include paper money, which miraculously remained intact

after being submerged 12,000 feet underwater for more than a hundred years; a pen recovered in its original wrapper and box; and a wooden brush, among other personal items.

On the surface, it may feel like you’re looking at a bunch of random bits and bobs, and that’s because you are, but that’s just part of it The items in this collection act almost as a time capsule, revealing everyday habits, class disparities and technological advances—and shortcomings—of the time period.

Throughout the exhibit, you’ll read about the many people who were aboard; what brought them to the ship; what they hoped to do upon arrival in America; and what family they brought along or left behind. Each detail adds another drop of knowledge, powering your imagination with the steam that it needs to feel connected to both the passengers and the crew of the Titanic. –Em Jurbala

Best Bites

Get a taste of celebrity chef’s celebrated dishes

If you are a fan of Gordon Ramsay’s cuisine, you’ll be happy to know that his signature entrées all feature prominently on the menu of Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay at Harrah’s. But, if you want to venture outside of those, there are also plenty of other choices for you.

Drinks here have playful monikers like the Fig Muleton, a take on the mule with Black Infusions fig vodka, Licor 43, Frangelico liqueur and Bundaberg ginger beer. Or try The English Cucurita, channeling a margarita with El Jimador silver tequila and lime juice, but going creatively beyond with cucumber water and Midori liqueur.

The menu focuses a little more on seafood, and starting off your meal with a jumbo lump crab cake or a king crab served with butter, lemon and an English mustard sauce will take care of that requirement. But you can also choose from a seafood tower in two sizes, with crab, lobster tail, shrimp, mussels and scallop ceviche.

Other items from the raw bar include tuna tartare with wonton crisps; shrimp cocktail; and oysters on the half

shell, from both U.S. coasts. And, of course, the Ramsay signatures of pan-seared scallops, served alongside pork belly and apricot purée, and crispy skin salmon are always great options.

The classic Ramsay dish is the beef Wellington, filet surrounded by puff pastry and mushroom duxelles. Other beef options include an 8-ounce filet mignon and a 24-ounce ribeye.

On the sides side, ordering the maitake mushroom with char siu butter and miso aioli is highly recommended; in fact, vegetarians could make a meal of these mushrooms—and be so happy. They’re scrumptious.

Other good things to try are the butternut squash risotto and roasted chicken breast with herb butter and creamed corn polenta. And you can’t miss the sticky toffee pudding, a Ramsay staple that enjoys immense popularity, probably because of the decadent toffee sauce—it’s so supremely rich. To try all the best, order the tasting menu and get the risotto, Wellington and pudding all in one go. –Nina King

How Much You’ll Feel

Band’s Golden Nugget show promises plenty of good vibes

It’s unclear if most bands whose music falls into the category of “yacht rock” are happy with that designation, but one thing is for sure: Ambrosia embraces it fully and without reservation. The group even made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as part of the show’s “Yacht Rock 2K11” theme, performing two of the songs that would help define the ’70s: “Biggest Part of Me” and “How Much I Feel.”

The California-based group, which started with David Pack, Joe Puerta,

Christopher North and Burleigh Drummond, is one of those groups that, when you see them in concert, find yourself constantly saying, “Oh! I didn’t know they did this song.”

Their canon is full of earworms you immediately begin humming to a few bars in, from “You’re the Only Woman,” “Holdin’ on to Yesterday,” “How Long” and so many more. And they’ll be bringing all those sounds and many more to Golden Nugget this week when they perform live.

The band’s current iteration features most of the original members, including Puerta, Drummond and North, with Kipp Lennon replacing Pack as lead vocalist. There will be plenty of memory-jogging moments in the show, and with the good vibes their music engenders, you may be looking around for the nearest yacht. –Ken

Making Its Mark

Rooftop lounge is a gem in downtown’s nightlife offerings

It’s such an only-in-Vegas moment: Upon stepping off the elevators to Legacy Club, you’ll be greeted by local legends like Howard Hughes, Jay Sarno, Benny Binion and Jackie Gaughan. OK, so these men have passed away, so not exactly. What you actually see are metal busts of those men, plus six more notables, that welcome you to the bar and lounge on the 60th floor that honors the spirit of the icons.

The literal crowning jewel of Circa Resort & Casino (it sits on the hotel’s rooftop) offers an indoor and outdoor experience that should be on everyone’s to-do list while visiting Las Vegas. Not only will the phenomenal views of downtown, the Strip and beyond leave you completely in awe, but Legacy

Club is also a top spot for chic and lush surroundings, an impressive cocktail program and some of the best bartenders in the biz. In fact, according to two of the industry’s most-respected competitions, their lead bartender was rated a top 10 bartender in the West, and the whole bar team was rated one of the top 30 in the nation.

“The drinking experience is second to none here,” said Sam Pulliam, director of beverage for Circa Resort & Casino. “The team we have is the best in the city. The menu is diverse. We have something for every flavor palate; if we don’t, then you can tell any of our bartenders ... some flavors that you like, and they can make you a cocktail off the cuff that’s gonna hit that sweet spot.”

Insider’s Tips

Book the Sunset Package. “Choose a Strip view table or outside at a fire pit for $100,” Pulliam said. “It comes with a champagne toast at sunset, two cocktails and a little surprise of small bites to eat. It’s cool, because there’s not a view like this in the city where you get to see the sun go down and the city turn on.”

Book the Craft Cocktail Course. Every Friday and Saturday from 2-4 p.m. you’ll get your own bartender kit, learn how to make three cocktails and get schooled on the world of spirits by the bartender leading the class.

Check out the case filled with 1,000 ounces of real gold!

Enjoy live music on the weekends.

Legacy Club takes nonalcoholic cocktails seriously, too. Check out the recipes and you’ll be tempted to order one yourself.

Cigar smokers will enjoy the cigar menu offerings with brands like Montecristo, Ashton Monarch, Cohiba, Rocky Patel, Patron and more.

24 | 7.9.23 Las Vegas Magazine

Pulliam spotlights three specialty cocktails to try, beginning with the Triple Seven, a perfect-for-summer sip. “It’s citrusy, floral, light and refreshing,” he said. Similar to the classic sour cocktail, it’s mixed with Patrón sherry cask-aged anejo, pisco, St-Germain, framboise, lime, egg white and blackberry.

“The way cocktails have kind of evolved over the years, people have tried to incorporate different spices you’d see in cooking and see how they can be incorporated into cocktails,” Pulliam said. “We’re trying to think outside the box but also make drinks that are still approachable for everybody.” And the perfect example of this philosophy is the Lucky Rabbit. It uses a sweet and slightly spiced syrup made from the Mediterranean spice ras el hanout, and the delicious result is mixed with Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare Casks rum, Principe de los Apostoles Mate gin, carrot juice and citrus and topped with black salt for a truly unique experience.

For those who like varying degrees of spice in their cocktail, try the What’s Your Number? The special blend of Casamigos blanco tequila, Ancho Reyes verde chile poblano liqueur, coconut, agave and

citrus is elevated with your choice of desired spice level, provided by one to five dashes of firewater bitters. This cocktail is not only tasty but also an adventure for your palate, and comes with a tiny coconut tart to aid in toning down the hotness you’ll feel in the back of your throat after each sip.

Fans of brown spirits can rejoice at Legacy Club with its wide and rare selection of whiskies and bour-

bons. “We have the 1994 to 1996 O.F.C. bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle, Weller, Old Rip Van Winkle,” Pulliam said. “We’ve even secured our own private barrels that are unique to Legacy Club—barrels from Blanton’s, Frey Ranch, Jefferson’s Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Weller and Russell’s Reserve.” –Kiko Miyasato

Beau Huizinga

Beverage manager is one of the Chicas, too!

Beau Huizinga started busing tables on the Las Vegas Strip when he was just 19. When he turned 21, he began barbacking, and four years later he climbed the ladder to bartender, perfecting his craft for a handful of years before he got wind that Chica was going to open at The Venetian and was looking for a lead bartender. That was six years ago, and today Huizinga is the beverage manager at Chica, chef Lorena Garcia’s Latin-influenced eatery.

“Chef Lorena is the first woman Latin American chef to own her own

restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip and we embrace that 100%,” he says. “We’re all the Chicas here.”

At the restaurant, Huizinga is responsible for all things cocktails. And although he’s not behind the bar these days mixing up the drinks, he says, “I’ll always be there for my bartenders to step in and help when needed and support them. I know how they feel when they’re in the weeds because I’ve been there.”

During his tenure with Chica, Huizinga has used his spirits knowledge not

• Libation • Spicy Mamacita

With summer here, Huizinga and his team have created new seasonal cocktails that use ingredients like fresh fruits. A perfect example is the Spicy Mamacita. The sweet, slightly spiced cocktail is a mix of tequila, freshly blended strawberries and Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, all finished with a Tajin rim. –KM

only to impress guests at The Venetian restaurant, but also to help launch the bar programs at Chica’s other locations in Miami and Aspen, Colo.

When the manager looks back on his career and working his way up that ladder toward success, he says, “When I think about my career, I think about how lucky I’ve been just to fall into the right places with the right people. I had no idea where this was going to take me. Being around people and the energy and making hospitality a part of my life—it feels incredible.” –Kiko

RULE THE WORLD.

Carversteak promises an unforgettable experience from every angle

Your memories of a restaurant experience are often shaped by where you eat in the venue—after all, how many times have you asked the host or hostess, “Can we have that table?” It’s really as important as the food, service and atmosphere. At Carversteak in Resorts World Las Vegas, that aspect has been given serious consideration, as there are multiple stunning dining areas:

The lounge, with its large, welcoming chairs and bar area with an ever-changing digital background;

The main dining room, with a mixture of comfortable booths and appealing art on the walls;

A private dining room featuring plenty of space and gorgeous display cases containing a wide array of cutlery;

The north and south outdoor patios, with their natural vegetation and

great sightlines of the city; The indoor center bar patio, which contains a full bar and small garden of herbs (which are used in some of the cocktails).

28 | 7.9.23 Las Vegas Magazine
Kansas City strip

All this is to say there simply isn’t a bad seat in the house at Carversteak. And there isn’t a wrong choice on the menu, either, starting with the seasonal summer cocktails. The Tannin’ in Cabo is a flavor explosion, made with Maestro Dobel silver tequila, Chareau aloe liqueur, Ancho Reyes Verde liqueur, lime-agave sour and Fever-Tree Grapefruit. And whiskey fans looking for something refreshing will get just that with the Lakeside Melon Cooler, a blend of Jack Daniel’s rye, meloncello liqueur, tropical iced tea and black lemon bitters.

There aren’t any wrong steak choices, either. Whether you go wet-aged ribeye

or dry-aged Kansas City, Allen Brothers filet mignon or Creekstone Farm striploin, you’ll start your meal by selecting your steak knife from an attractive case of several distinct knives. It’s a small touch, but an effective one.

Don’t fret if you’re not in a red-meat mood; there’s plenty of variety here, from organic roasted chicken served with haricot vert natural jus and Colorado lamb chop served with crispy polenta to Hudson Valley duck breast accompanied by maraschino cherries, spring onions and peas. Seafood fans will appreciate the inclusion of Atlantic salmon and Maine scallops, while raw

bar fans have their choice between yellowtail sashimi, big eye tuna tartare and scallop crudo (here prepared with serrano pepper, pickled cucumber and a coconut lime vinaigrette—so yummy!).

Hopefully the vegan audience hasn’t stopped reading this article, because Carversteak has taken great care to make sure fans of plant-based dishes are taken care of. There’s a delicious appetizer of chickpea fries with a cilantro jalapeño lime dip, as well as tasty entrées like a vegan chop, made with organic legumes and grains and served with chimichurri. Or opt for the house-made semolina pasta topped with seasonal veggies.

Your meal at Carversteak just isn’t complete without dessert, as there are some absolute crazy creations here. The rocky road butterscotch sundae contains a trio of ice cream flavors, toasted marshmallows and almond chocolate crisp, all drizzled with a warm chocolate sauce, while the baked Nevada has to be seen to be believed—it’s a huge mixed berry sorbet and coconut lime cake covered with meringue, and is flambéed with premium black rum before you dig in. Whatever section of Carversteak you’re sitting in, heads will turn.

Bert Kreischer and a few of his friends gather for the Fully Loaded Comedy Festival

Bert Kreischer has been known to have a good time for a long time. In fact, in 1997, Rolling Stone ran an article terming him “the top partier at the Number One Party School in the country,” and that story helped launch Kreischer’s comedic career (the story even inspired the 2002 film National Lampoon’s Van Wilder). Since then, he’s become known for his shirtless storytelling on stages all over the globe.

Kreischer’s most popular story, “The Machine,” a tale of his encounter with the Russian mafia while on a college trip, helped him climb to new levels of popularity as the video has amassed 53 million views on YouTube since being posted in 2016. Kreischer later used the story’s name to title his 2023 comedy special and his recently released movie.

The funnyman also brings his talents to podcast listeners’ ears with Bertcast and 2 Bears, 1 Cave (which he co-

hosts with fellow comedian Tom Segura). Kreischer also hosts Bert Kreischer’s Open Tabs, where he explores his open browser tabs, and Something’s Burning, a cooking podcast with rotating guests.

No stranger to collaboration, obviously, Kreischer’s current tour is actually a Fully Loaded Comedy Festival, bringing an ever-changing lineup of comedians to each tour stop with The Machine himself as the headliner. When the tour makes its Vegas stop, Stavros Halkias, Andrew Santino, Bruce Bruce, Big Jay Oakerson, Ralph Barbosa, Maddy Smith, Cipha Sounds and Carter Cruise come with it.

A standout stand-up on this list, Oakerson brings chilled-out, laid-back vibes

with his dirty humor. In his two-decade-long career, Oakerson has made appearances at some of the biggest comedy festivals, and on various television shows including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn.

Another highlight in the lineup is cast member of Wild ’N Out, touring comedian and social media icon Smith. Smith is known for her cutting roasts and has amassed millions of views on her YouTube compilations. You may have seen Smith in her appearances on BET, HBO and Barstool Sports. Comedian and podcaster Halkias will also make an appearance. An accomplished jokester, Halkias has written for and performed on Adult Swim and MSG Network’s People Talking Sports and Other Stuff, and has appeared in Comedy Central’s Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents. He’s also become well known for his

impeccable crowd work and sharp timing. Clearly there’s no shortage of talent coming with this jam-packed lineup, and with Kreischer as the headliner, there’s little reason not to try to score some tickets. Vegas is the place to party, so why not do it with the master of partying himself— it’s basically a guaranteed good time.

Miranda Lambert raises the roof in her ‘Velvet Rodeo’ residency

There are women who make country music, then there are women who made country music what it is today. Miranda Lambert has one boot planted firmly in each camp. The most-honored recording artist and performer in the history of the Academy of Country Music Awards is as prolific as ever, with nominations in every category she was eligible for at this year’s ceremony and a new cookbook. Y’all Eat Yet? Welcome to the Pretty Bitchin’ Kitchen, pays homage to the recipes and East Texas spirit of friends and family that shaped Lambert’s life, much as her songs honor the patronesses of country music’s past while shaping its contemporary sound.

Lambert qualified for Triple Crown status when she was named Entertainer of the Year at the 2022 ACM Awards. Coupled with top new vocalist and top vocalist recognitions in 2007 and 2010, respectively, this put her in a class with previous Triple Crown honorees such as Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean. She has 38 ACM Awards to go with her three Grammys and 14 Country Music Association Awards.

Before she started becoming decorated by the country music industry, her mother and grandmother influenced her downhome domestic aesthetics. The cookbook comes in the wake of her Wanda June Home collection (stoneware, barware, throw pillows, rugs) with “recipes for meals that are meant to be eaten with your fingers o paper plates, or on your fanciest antique china.” Lambert promises “The Best Lemon Meringue Pie Ever,” magic beans,

famous meatloaf and a lesson from her daddy on seasoning cast-iron cookware to perfection.

Raising the roof and sharing hard truths in the kitchen laid the foundation for Lambert’s approach to music as she set out on her career more than two decades ago. Her voice is distinct, sweet and sultry, flavored with a rasp reminiscent of her rockabilly heroine Wanda Jackson and the sass of Dolly Parton.

Parton co-hosted the most recent ACM Awards, where Tanya Tucker was in the house as a presenter. Lambert performed “Carousel,” from her latest album Palomino, dressed in feathers and sequins, shining like the chandelier described in the song. The poignant lyrics depict a circus performer who settled down but reminisces about her glory years of flying through air with the greatest of ease. Lambert drew on her ability to imagine life through the eyes of others for the cowrite with longtime collaborators Luke Dick and Natalie Hemby.

With Lainey Wilson winning for Female Artist of the Year, three generations of country music royalty were represented. Tucker still records, Parton sang a song from her latest rock-oriented album and Jackson only recently retired from performing. Like her precedents, Lambert can plan on being relevant far into the future, and she proves it at every date of her Velvet Rodeo residency in Las Vegas. Lambert, who just left her longtime label Sony Nashville, still has an abundance of song-inspiring memories from the dinner tables where she absorbed life’s lessons, and she’s happy to keep serving them up.

WHILE BELLAGIO CONSERVATORY AND BOTANICAL GARDENS changes several times a year, the latest incarnation of the attraction is especially spectacular. The summer display, Majesty: The Grandeur of Nature, presents a fantasy world, including personifications of masculine and feminine aspects of nature intermixed with larger-than-life, whimsical creations.

“Rooted in the meaning of greatness, Majesty: The Grandeur of Nature represents Mother Nature’s beauty and the transformative energy that awakens during the summer season,” said designer Ed Libby in a news release. “Each element of this display plays an important role in the message, symbolizing the revitalizing breath of life that summer gives o and the growth that stems from this season.”

Inside the conservatory you’ll find four garden beds, each with a special scene and an incredible mix of plants, trees, shrubs, sculpture, water and other elements. In the south bed, the feminine side of nature is personified as an 18-foot partial figure cups a butterfly in her hands as water cascades from them, and rose blooms seem to fall from her hair and grow and

grow. In the north bed opposite, the masculine aspect of nature is shown with a 23-foot sculpture topped with a seated male figure, who seemingly ponders the wonders around him as water falls from an urn. Forming a backdrop are video screens with waterfalls and other scenes.

Occupying the center of the large west bed, the essence of Mother Nature rising from the earth is represented by a 28-foot-tall pair of graceful, willowy arms whose hands are filled with massive flowers, each several feet across. More of these flowers (which resemble crocheted pieces) are scattered throughout the bed; together, 20,000 preserved roses make up the blooms. Those flowers are echoed elsewhere in the exhibit by huge, soaring blooms seemingly springing from the earth. A flight of stairs leads up to what seems like a fairy abode in a tree. In the east bed, meander up a stone pathway to a tall fountain made of pots. That area makes for a good place to eye the west bed. On each side are whimsical human elements, such as a man topped with an oak leaf, and a sprite popping out of an oversized pot.

Throughout, you’ll find an incredible number of plants, such as 15,000

succulents and 11,541 potted plants and flowers. There are also 1,100 pounds of moss and 10,800 purple and white blooming branches on the wisteria trees in the attraction. Birds and butterflies abound, and a pleasant floral scent fills the air—and you can take that scent home with a “Majesty” candle sold next door in The Giardini Garden Store. (A bonus: Spy out the area behind the hotel lobby. It’s a truly charming courtyard vista, and matches the conservatory display, with live plants and elements like giant butterflies.) Another magnificent o ering in the conservatory is The Garden Table. In each seasonal display, this is in a di erent location, and here is tucked under the roots of the west bed tree. You can get brunch from Sadelle’s Café or dinner from Michael Mina; reservations for that experience are required at 702.693.7317.

Barry Manilow is about to break Elvis Presley’s performance record

turned 80 in June to much fanfare from his devoted Fanilows. The love and loyalty shared between the singer-songwriter and his audiences is one of the strongest bonds in show business, and Manilow can’t stay away from the stage for long before it pulls him back with irresistible force. His energy spills over into Carnegie Hall and Broadway, but in a few months he’ll observe a career landmark of a personal kind involving a di erent kind of irresistible force: Elvis Presley. By Sept. 23, if nothing interferes with his schedule at Westgate Las Vegas, Manilow’s The Hits Come Home residency will have surpassed Presley’s record of 636 performances inside the iconic International Showroom. When

38 | 7.9.23 Las Vegas Magazine

Barbra Streisand opened the venue in 1969, the property it was housed in was the International Hotel. Presley became its star performer shortly afterward and remained its resident headliner, with his own dedicated suite that became a home away from home, as The International became The Las Vegas Hilton in 1971.

Manilow, born in Brooklyn three years after the Copacabana opened in New York City, was in his piano-playing adolescence when Presley began appearing on television in 1956. That same year, Dick Clark became host of American Bandstand and grew the Philadelphia-based dance program into a nationally broadcast show viewable by Brooklyn high school students.

As Presley focused on musical movies throughout the ’60s, Manilow became a theatrical composer, music director for TV and jingle writer. He was signed to his first recording contract in 1969, the year of Presley’s debut at the International. Presley had headlined Vegas previously, but this was the gig that would define him as a Vegas performer in the ’70s. Manilow defined himself on late-night 1970s music programs such as The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner’s

Rock Concert. Songs such as “Could It Be Magic and “It’s a Miracle” received radio airplay boosts from his numerous appearances, accompanied by his Lady Flash trio of backup singers. Before he had that exposure, he was recruited by Bette Midler as a pianist and became her producer in the studio. By the end of 1973, he produced two albums for her and released his self-titled debut album.

As Presley retained a prominent profile in Vegas, Manilow was ever-present on the airwaves and charts with hits such as “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs” and “Can’t Smile without You.” In 1977, he starred in his first television special and wrote lyrics to the American Bandstand theme that wound up being used, bringing his voice into homes every week.

Presley passed away that year, creating a vacancy in the showroom that wasn’t really filled until it became Manilow’s musical home in Vegas. Now, as he celebrates 14 years at Westgate, 50 years as a recording artist and 80 years as a human being, Manilow is set to eclipse Presley as having given the most performances in a space that is sacred to both fans of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll and the Prince of ’70s Pop.

immaculately maintained landscaping, guaranteeing your guests will be impressed before they even walk in the door.

The details throughout this home, designed by renowned architect Richard Luke, are too numerous to mention here, but include Turkish marble floors, architectural iron accents, and pocket doors that blur the line between indoor and outdoor space. Many areas of this home allow for some amazing views of the

city, mountains and, of course, the golf course.

Each of the six bedrooms features its own en-suite bathroom, so no matter which bedroom you call dibs on, privacy is guaranteed.
