COMMODORE’S REPORT

It is a pleasure to present my final report as Commodore on the activities of the Club over the past year.

to ways of expanding our membership base by attracting and retaining new members.

The year - in keeping with the theme of innovation - has been an active one and we have seen a significant number of initiatives. To mention a few:

As I mentioned before, HYC is a significant enterprise. It exists solely for the benefit of members and in such a diverse group benefits may be viewed though different prisms. Thus we seek to achieve a balance in everything the Club does especially a balance between the sporting and social side. We have attempted to introduce some innovative social events and we watch with interest the extent of member support.

This year we have seen the full year benefit of the Junior Club house. It’s rewarding to see it used so effectively and I pay tribute to the Junior Committee, led by the Junior Dinghy Captain Marcus Fisk and his deputy Jessica Watson, which has been formed to manage the activities of this important element of our Club.

Last year I reported a downturn in the general trading income of the Club. This is income derived from bars, restaurants and functions – primarily the social side of club life. I am delighted to report that the action taken has seen a positive improvement in this area. The increase in function activities has made a significant contribution to Club profitability and credit must go to the GM and Functions Coordinator Hannah Thomson for their efforts.

The Fuel distribution facility is now fully operating for the benefit of the Club. While fuel sales added marginally to the Club’s bottom line there are more strategic benefits going forward from this initiative. Management has considered a number of options for pen expansion and negotiations have now been entered with the Dept of Transport for this expansion.

The expansion of the Members Dining Room was recently completed and the numbers attending over the past few weeks indicates this improvement is very welcome by members. The enclosure of Pinkies Wet Bar is now under way and this should improve the utility of this social area beyond the summer months. The planned children’s playground has been on the agenda for sometime – I understand we have a potential sponsor for this endeavour so it shouldn’t be too far away.

As foreshadowed in previous reports, we are presently bedding in the new accounting and operations system in the Club. This has been under active review for some time and allows our administration to manage the business of the club in a modern and fully integrated environment. It assists Executive Committee by providing concise financial reporting on a more consolidated – whole of Club – basis. It also allows the Club to manage individual member accounts more efficiently. Once implementation has been completed, the benefits of the system will be evident to us all. The member’s survey conducted last year continues to guide management. We have invested greater effort into communications within the Club. Thanks to the efforts of Vicki James - Marketing and Public Relations - our website has been significantly remodelled. We are now heavily into social media through Facebook after this was suggested by a number of members in the survey. The newsletter, distributed via email, has proved a great way to publicise Club events with a statistically significant response from members. HYC has a strong training and development culture. We continue our close contact with schools and deliver a range of training programs to members and the community alike. Thanks to a dedicated band of mentors, coaches and race managers – managed by Chris Kelly and Mel Harvey - we are well represented both at formal events and more importantly the fostering of water activities at the local level. I am very pleased that our commitment to junior development has been enhanced by the introduction of the High Achiever Sailing program. This follows the adoption of a goal to have a national champion at HYC within 5 years. Already we are seeing the support of our young sailors pay dividends in national and international regattas. At a time when other clubs are known to be struggling, our Club Membership continues to grow and it speaks well of the Club that we maintain a high rate of member retention. Obviously membership is our lifeblood and we remain open

4 Compass September 2015 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

The Boat Lifter business, ably managed by Neil Dorrington, while below budget for the year maintained a strong performance and continues to add value to the Club. In my various contact with other clubs I continue to receive favourable feedback on our boat lifter service. Hillarys enjoys tremendous support from a band of dedicated volunteers. Indeed every person on Management – every person on a Section committee - including our History Committee, is a volunteer. We particularly enjoy support from a special band of retired blokes who can be seen most days down at the Club; just doing things that need to be done. Thanks to all our generous volunteers for your dedication. The Club would only be half as good without your efforts. In this vein I think it’s fair to say that that most members appreciate just how good our Club is. As I get around most express a high degree of satisfaction with the amenities and service that we at HYC enjoy. As Commodore I have the opportunity to regularly experience the facilities at our kindred clubs and I can assure you we do not suffer in any comparison. Similarly I have been impressed by the high level of satisfaction which is continually expressed by members in the administration of the club. The general performance and access to administrative staff and management is a hallmark of HYC. I wish to record my appreciation to the General Manager, Danny Rechichi, and all his staff for their dedication in support of Club Members. Finally, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served as Commodore of this great Club over the past two years. The extent to which I have enjoyed the experience is very much down to the way Sandy my lovely wife has committed to making the role a mutual one. Thank you to you all.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

ANNUAL GENERAL MEEETING Thank you to all those members who attended the HYC Annual General Meeting and for supporting the continued development of the Club. We will do our best to maintain our performance and operational levels through the next year and more.

NEW OPERATING SYSTEM The implementation of the new integrated system took place during July and as we settle in to it, members should see improved monthly reporting and use of the point of sale benefits.

LOYALTY REWARDS PROGRAM Linked to the new system is a loyalty program which will be introduced in the near future. Management Committee is still discussing the final format and benefits to be available to members, which is likely to include rewards by way of discount or complimentary food and beverage based on patronage and account spend when using your member card. The member charge and access card will be the instrument measuring the activity of members and confirming when reward benefits are due. The more a member uses their card the more they will benefit.

begin when the program is introduced and not expected to be retrospective. All in all, as stated many times previously, the more a member supports, attends and utilises the facilities of the Club, the more the benefits and so too the savings. The continued affordability and quality of services provided by the Club remain positive in comparison to the similar offerings out there in the wider community.

ANNUAL VESSEL MAINTENANCE It is that time of year again when owners should be booking their vessels in for annual maintenance requirements. Avoid being disappointed during the busy October – December pre Christmas period and call Kerryn or Neil at the lifters to book your vessel in.

INSIDE THE CLUB Here is the latest list of members drawn Friday evenings at 7.30pm in the Clubhouse. The drawn member needs to be present to collect the $500, not friends of, sisters of, or 5 minutes away by car, they need to be in the building when drawn.

Also being proposed are two rebate incentives for members, supporting increased membership and membership retention. The first is a rebate back to a members account when they introduce or propose a new person for membership. The second is a similar rebate when a member attains membership milestones such as 5, 10, 15 or more years of membership. This proposal is expected to

acknowledged at HYC

Sailing very successfully in major blue-water offshore events this year saw Todd Giraudo named as Senior Sportsperson of the Year at the AGM of Hillarys Yacht Club for 2015. After taking delivery of his new yacht, a Sunfast 3600 Todd sailed Kraken into 5th place in his division of the Sydney to Hobart race and had the best corrected time for the smallest boat in the fleet. He backed this up with a win in the double handed division of the Fremantle to Albany return race in April and best combined corrected time of all yachts. Todd has been a consistent winner of double handed offshore events in WA and a worthy recipient of the Senior Sportsperson for the third time. The Junior Sportsperson of the Year is Jackson Porter, deservedly so after achieving the number one ranking in WA, sailing in the Optimist class. Competing in the National Championships he was the 9th placed Australian whilst in the WA State Championships he placed 2nd in a very competitive fleet. For his efforts and achievements thus far Jackson has been chosen to represent Australia in the Asian and Oceanic Championships in Doha, Qatar, in October. Club Member of the Year was awarded to Paul Frzop for his tireless service as fundraiser and ambassador at the club on Friday nights. His good humour and spirited approach typified his love of the Club and its members. In addition, Paul has been a very keen angler for many years and has served as captain of that section.

highlighted the acquisition of the fuel services on the jetty, improvements to the restaurant and wet bar, the addition of the junior clubhouse and successful social and training events at Hillarys Yacht Club during his tenure. He attributed this to a hard working staff led by Danny Rechichi and many volunteers who gave thousands of hours of service to the club. The new Commodore, Simon Davenport has big shoes to fill if the standing ovation for Chris Grant was anything to go by.

Bart’s Bash

Back for another year

Last year we came together in Andy’s name to do an incredible thing. Over 30,000 people took to the water to race alongside each other in thousands of different types of boats. Bart’s Bash, the global sailing event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, has launched participant sign up with the help of some of the world’s best in the sport of sailing. Sailing star Sir Ben Ainslie has accepted an official Guinness World Record Certificate for Bart’s Bash, the charity global sailing race that took place on 21 September 2014. It is now officially the largest sailing race on one day in the world. Sir Ben is one of the founding trustees of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (ASSF) and accepted the certificate from Guinness World Record adjudicator, Elizabeth Smith, at a ceremony at the CWM FX London Boat Show at ExCel. The charity was founded in memory of, and inspired by, Olympic Gold medallist Andrew “Bart” Simpson who died at the age of 36. Bart’s Bash was created both to remember the inspirational sailor and to raise funds for the charity’s work in sailing. Over 16,000 boats in 60 countries took to the water. The first time event raised a massive £366,391.95. An amazing 9,484 boats at 237 locations worldwide submitted evidence (video of start and finish and witness statements) which was then submitted by the team to Guinness to enable them to verify the record. Sir Ben Ainslie commented “It’s a real pleasure to accept this certificate on behalf of the Foundation. No-one could have imagined how big the event would become. Initially we weren’t sure if we would make our target of 2,500 boats on the water. In fact it was nearly 10,000! It is a real reflection of

how much Bart meant to people across the world, and how sailing can unite people.” Guinness World Records President Alistair Richards on the achievement: “It is a great honour to officially recognise the record title for Largest Sailing Race in 24 hours (multiple venues) achieved by Bart’s Bash, organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. It is testament to Andrew’s popularity and enduring legacy. The work the foundation does is a brilliant and fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the sport he loved and always encouraged others to apply the same dedication in order to reach their potential. We at Guinness World Records share Andrew’s and the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’s passion for encouraging people to work hard to achieve extraordinary things.” 2015 will be the second time this remarkable sailing event will take place. Hillarys Yacht Club will again attempt to take part in Bart’s Bash in the hope the weather is more favourable weather conditions than in 2014.

Date: Sunday 20 September 2015 Time: Meet 9am for 10am race Bart’s Bash is officially a monster - the largest sailing race in the world, verified by Guinness World Records. It is expected that over 30,000 sailors will take to the water at over 550 locations around the world. Register online for HYC at www.bartsbash.com. Contact Chris Kelly for more information.

HYC Races in the UK

Cowes Week &Fastnet Cowes

Week

is one of the longest running events in UK sporting history having first taken place in 1826. It is an iconic British sporting event and one of the longest running and best-known sailing regattas in the world. The event lasts for eight days and takes place each August in the Solent waters off Cowes in the UK.

Lancelot 11 on starboard tack

What does one do having sailed in the China Cup, Whitsundays Regatta, Fremantle to Albany and return, 2014/15 Sydney to Hobart, not to mention Hillarys to Rottnest and return, of course it’s off to sail in the Cowes Week regatta and compete in the Fastnet Race; that’s on the other side of the globe! ViceCommodore and skipper of Deckchairs Overboard (Club Champion 2015) Neil Harrison has taken his wife Wendy, bowman Ryan Keeffe and the crew of Not a Diamond (Sydney to Hobart yacht) to the UK for an extraordinary opportunity to sail in one of the great ocean races. The race which started on August 16 from Cowes finishing in Plymouth is remembered for the very challenging conditions in 1979 which resulted in the loss of 5 yachts and 15 sailors as only 86 yachts of 303 starters finished. Fortunately regulations, yacht construction and prerequisite experience has made the race safer today. Neil and the crew sailed a Beneteau First 40, Lancelot 11 chartered for the race and whilst Wendy did not fancy doing the Fastnet she did sail during the Cowes Week regatta. The conditions both for the Cowes Week and Fastnet were vastly different from 1979. At the start there was little

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

wind and conditions didn’t improve until half way through the race making for a very frustrating beginning however when the breeze picked up the yachts took off. Lancelot 11 finished at 18:27 (BST) on August 20th (4d 5h 27m 5s) covering 174NM in the last 24 hours. They were 42nd/72 yachts in IRC Div 2 and 145th of 310 yachts overall in IRC. Well done Neil, Wendy, Ryan and crew!

Mark Pitt

Age and Membership HYC Mark age 66 and his family have been regular sailing competitors since joining HYC in 1992. The first thirteen years in Mirror dinghies and then in keelboats.

Family Background The Pitt family moved to Duncraig in 1986 deciding to make full use of the wonderful west coast for surfing, boating and fishing. Mark and wife Paula have two sons David 32 and James 22 and daughter Caroline 30.

Occupation A love of gold prospecting inspired Mark to become a Mining Engineer. He first came to Western Australia in 1970 chasing the excitement of the nickel boom then later moving back to gold mining.

Yachts After heavy rain in 1974 Mark purchased a wooden Quickcat to sail on the flooded salt lakes near Kalgoorlie. In 1992 he purchased a wooden Mirror dinghy Darkstar and commenced sailing at HYC with son David. After two seasons David moved on to a modern fibreglass Mirror Leading Edge 111 and daughter Caroline joined him in Darkstar. A few years later it was Caroline’s turn for a Fibreglass Mirror Taking Off and son James moved into Darkstar. In 2005 Mark bought a share in the Whiting 32 keelboat Murphys Law and in 2013 bought the Beneteau First 35 Mulberry.

Achievements and Awards For Mark the biggest achievement has been family fun on and in the water. Sailing has given the Pitt family the opportunity to compete in events not only around WA but interstate and internationally. These events have resulted in many lasting friendships and trophies. At HYC it has been satisfying developing the dinghy section especially working with Alan Eggers to provide the launching ramp at the western end of the club. In 2011 Mark was awarded the Bill Jaffray Memorial trophy for outstanding contribution to Mirror sailing; bringing the 2010 Mirror World Championships to Western Australia.

Special Events The 2000 Mirror Worlds in Ireland where daughter Caroline and her crew Jack O’Mahony joined 135 other crews on the start line of the invitation race. In 2007 as the Australian team manager when sons David and James sailed in the Mirror worlds in South Africa. Of course HYC sailing on the beautiful Indian Ocean is always a special event.

HYC Perspective

bringing interstate and overseas visitors here for meals. The fun of competition against the other two First 35 Beneteaus, Deckchairs Overboard and Haywire is a regular club event.

Regrets “Not having made rabbit stew out of the bunny award for ridiculous sailing in club races.” Mark said of the three times he was presented with the “bunny award” during the last season. [Editor’s note: Mark is a good sport giving permission for this to go in!]

CLUB UPDATE

COMMODORE’S BALL Rio Carnival set the scene for this year’s Commodores Ball held on Saturday 20 June. This year marked Chris Grant’s last as Commodore. Colour and feathers decorated the Harbour Room and guests enjoyed pre-drinks and canapes served in the newly extended Members’ Restaurant. The menu was superb, with entrees of scrumptious pulled pork quesadilla and coconut Brazilian chicken, curried oven baked barramundi fillet and braised lamb shoulder for mains and assorted mini dessert platters to round off the meal. The Rio Dancers entertained the crowd with their Carnival floor show and they even has some of the crowd up and swinging their hips. L.A. Gold continued to entertain throughout the night. You can view the photos from the night on our website.

SMOKIE’S DISCO The Motown sound took radio by storm during the 60s, and its phenomenal success continued into the 70s. On Saturday 15 August the HYC Harbour Room took a step back in time and transformed into a discotheque of colour and shimmering disco balls to replicate the Motown era. Playing all the classic hits from the golden years in the motor city Smokie journeyed through ALL the classic Motown hits. See the Power report for all the information.

Social Events

A big thank you to the kitchen, wait and bar staff who worked so hard in making the night a success. We look forward to next year.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

SAFETY SEMINAR On August 1st we conducted a very successful seminar held in the Wet Bar with 55 members in attendance representing 23 yachts. This was a very good representation from the Keel section. The emphasis was on the maintenance and use of lifejackets. It is now a requirement to complete a certificate annually to demonstrate that each lifejacket has been self -serviced. There are a number of checks as identified by the manufacturers. For further information please go onto the manufacturer’s websites. When needing to adjust the volume of air in the lifejacket use the air tube to both reduce or increase.

EPIRBS EPIRBS that are GPS compatible will give a more accurate search area when deployed. To conform with YA requirements, boats sailing offshore are now required to have a GPS compatible EPIRBs.

SKIN FITTINGS At the seminar we discussed the need to regularly inspect underwater fittings. As the boat becomes older it is essential to ensure these are in good condition. If there is a concern please discuss with Neil Dorrington at the boat lifters when carrying out your annual maintenance. Neil also advises us to ensure that we need to check with the insurance requirements as it may be necessary to have an inspection

WitH CrAFtsMANsHip tHis superior, it’s ALWAys sMootH sAiLiNg.

authorised by the insurance company. It is timely to have this carried out at this time.

NEW Powerboat handling courses These YA accredited courses will commence in September. These courses will give the participants the opportunity to develop their skills from the recreational Skippers ticket level. A trip plan to Mindarie is planned as the on-water exercise. Please contact the office or view on our website for further information.

WOW The Women on Water initiative has been well received. Although the weather has not been favourable on all occasions the women, coming from different experience and knowledge bases have had fun sailing with other like-minded women. This will be continued at times that do not clash with our other sailing events.

TRAVELLERS We have enjoyed the company of new Optimist sailors Kai and Jaiya Marns–Morris over the past 2 years. Russ and Greer of the naked Fig Café in Swanbourne have sold up and have flown to America to sail the yacht that they have purchased to call their family home for the next 2 years. A fantastic opportunity for this family to go for a sail together. I am sure when they return there will be some terrific stories and wonderful experiences to share.

STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING SUP, Stand Up Paddle, Stand Up Paddlesurfing, Stand up paddle boarding or Paddle Surfing. What ever you like to call it, they are one and the same – standing on a board with paddle in hand exploring your favourite body of water. A Stand Up Paddle board opens up a whole new world of adventure, exploration, fitness and family fun. Because there are so many ways to enjoy the sport and the fact that ANYONE can do it means that the sport is for everyone. On Saturday June 27, Hillarys Yacht Club hosted a free come and try day for standup paddleboarding (SUP). Marshall Thompson from Indian Ocean Paddle Surf conducted the 3 hour trial session out from our dinghy ramp. There were 25 eager HYC members who took up the challenge, some experienced and some first timers. Graham Atkinson brought his board along as did Tanya Bartram. Whilst Graham did have a swim he demonstrated how much fun SUP is and how

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

it can fit into our club activities. Keith and Debra Fisk both gave it ago for the first time. Both mastered the idea very quickly and both had lots of fun falling off and swimming. There was a general acceptance from the members that this is a forward direction for the Club. Storage of boards would enable regular activity, access to the supplier and organised activities including racing at Little Island. Congratulations to the Stand Up Paddlers from the dive section who are training weekly.

MARINA FACILITIES

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3 Mon of the Month at 7.30pm rd

The committee would like to acknowledge Ron McVie for his contribution and commitment to the Marina Facilities Committee. Apart from numerous other contributions to the club, Ron has been on the committee since the inception of pens and moorings and is well known on N Jetty. Ron's retirement is well deserved and I am sure that you will join with us in thanking Ron for his countless hours of voluntary work that provided the safety and security of members and their vessels.

I received a disturbing report from a senior member of the Club that on returning to his pen after a day out on the water, to find that his mooring ropes had been removed. Not only does this create a potentially dangerous situation, but also borders on stupidity as the situation could have easily turned into disaster if the weather had not been so kind. I remind all members that CCTV is situated throughout the Club and any person found removing any property from another pen without authority, will result in the person being prosecuted.

On that note, we are looking for members to join the Marina Facilities Committee so that the good work carried out by Ron and other past and present members continues well into the future. If you are interested you are welcome to attend our meetings held on the 3rd Monday of each calendar month at 7.30pm at HYC. If you would like further information please contact me through the details available under "Contact Us" in the Compass.

Recent inspection on several jetties found a number of pens with weights missing. HYC staff and MFC members carry out informal inspections and will do what they can to assist but it remains your responsibility to make the Club aware of any missing weights or other issues so that your vessel is as secure as possible at all times.

Chain on left is the usual telltale sign that a weight is missing

POWER

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm Sept - Moore River weekend Nov - Progressive Dinner 11 Dec - Christmas Dinner

There has been little Power Section boating since the last Compass Magazine. Clive and Penny Rowden attended a Flying Squadron get together, rafting up with John and Deanne Muntz on the river. We have also received the following report from member, Bob Mason, who travelled north for the winter. Broome has a shortfall in boating facilities, unlike Hillarys. •

Most boat launching is from beaches including 2 boat ramps which do not extend to the low tide mark.

Some charter boat operators convey their clients from beach to boat using 3 retractable wheeled tender boats to keep their feet dry.

One tourist operator uses 2 hovercrafts to convey their clients to dinosaur footprints and sunken flying boats on the ocean floor.

Most grey nomads like us use car topper tinnies to go fishing. As we returned from fishing the other day on the high tide at Cable Beach, we were able to motor around a marooned Toyota Landcruiser left by the owner [my skipper] who misjudged the spring tide height -- Oh! - What a feeling!

Don’t get me wrong, we have had plenty of good fishing, but weather cancellation problems also happen here in paradise as current 30 knot easterly winds have grounded many ocean boating activities in widespread areas across the north.

to cruise ships which members Chic and Pat Hoath recently reported on. Smokies Disco was once again a great success with more than 200 people attending. A good time was had and there would have been many weary legs on Sunday morning after the energy put into much of the dancing. Huge thanks to the Club staff who worked so hard to provide us with food and drink and who helped in the organisation and advertising of the event. Thanks are due to the sponsors of our major prizes, Living Colour for Hair. Prizes were awarded for ‘Best Dancer’ and ‘Best Dressed’ together with lots of minor prizes during the evening. The biggest thanks of course must go to ‘Smokie” himself - Jim Suffield gives tirelessly of his time, energy and audio equipment to ensure that this event is as successful as possible and that the guests enjoy an outstanding evening.

Lastly and by no means least, thanks to all of you who attended and made the whole thing worthwhile.

We are in the Roebuck Bay caravan park overlooking the mooring of boating traffic from private yachts and powerboats to pearl, charter and tug boats, rig tenders

Future events will include a trailer boat trip to Moore River in September, a progressive dinner in November and the Section Christmas Dinner on Friday 11th December. We hope to see you all on Opening Day, Sunday 4th October and enjoying the theme – “outer space”. Don’t forget to check the web site for further disco pictures. All best wishes ■ Barry Garratt-Reed

Shark Cave

Legend in status, extraordinary in reality It sounds like something Jack Sparrow would scrawl on old parchment but, on the GPS of Balaton Jack there is an 'X' that bears the legend Shark Cave! The co-ordinates acquired some years ago had remained there for perhaps 6 years or more untested. Out beyond the last rocky outcrop on the west end of Rottnest the ocean here for divers presents year round challenges of wind, tide and currents. Safely accessible only when the wind drops right off and the tide goes slack. Even on the most benign of days the mermaid line for returning to the boat can quickly run out tight on its full length. Why Shark Cave? Well most years a number of Grey Nurse sharks are known to congregate in a depression on the ocean floor at around 18m depth that has an overhanging limestone roof. They gather here only in late Autumn as a part of their biannual reproduction. In the years since the X was added dive plans to visit Shark Cave have been thwarted by sea conditions, bad weather or the lure of a few more crays before seasons end.

24 Compass September 2015 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

2015 was to be different. In early May the RC expressed her determination that this was going to happen. At the beginning of the week up to Saturday May 23rd..... Seabreeze suggested that perhaps this was the chance we needed. The indication was that the swell was going to drop right off for 3 days beforehand, improving visibility, and that by midmorning the wind would go too coinciding with slack tide. We all know how reliable Seabreeze can be from 5 days out but this time it barely changed all week. And so it was 14 divers made an early start hoping to get a clear site. Surely other divers would have seen the conditions (not to mention fishermen) so it was highly likely we wouldn't be lonely. Well our luck held. Arriving to only 3 other smaller boats well spread out and one of those was fishing. The next question then is how good were the co-ordinates. In poor visibility it's possible to swim within a few meters of a spot and see no clue. The first group went off on a bearing immediately to stern. The skipper though went first to check the anchor. Those still on deck watched the bubble stream of the large group swim

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

out and not stop indicating they perhaps hadn't hit the target and then turn and return slowly back towards the boat. After about 30 minutes the skipper pops up 50m off the starboard side and calls out 'it's here!'

arms length with their mouths set in a massed crooked tooth smile. Cameras snapped away and video recorded using the time to get as many shots as possible. Underwater light and water clarity guarantee a lot go straight to the recycle icon!

The main group returned to boat and to say the RC was very unhappy would be no exaggeration! The language! The second group entered and following the new bearing descended to the bottom and in short time came upon the X marked on our map! A wide circular hollow perhaps 20m across and there gliding effortlessly around not the 3 or 4 sharks we had hoped for, but 8,9 or maybe 10. The constant movement making it hard to be sure. All of them over 2m long. The largest over 3m. We swam around to the far side and entered through a narrower opening so that we could quietly slide in to observe.

Returning to the surface and removing the 'reg' barely had the word 'amazing' left the lips and the RC, not to be denied, and the first group were going back in to take their turn. By the time they had returned the wind was up, the surface choppy, and the opportunity for the second group to go back in was gone!

What followed was 30 minutes of interaction none of us had previously experienced. This was no AQWA dip with 2 over fed beasts - the huge graceful fish seemed happy to glide by at

The conversation on the return run was hyped by the adrenaline and reviewing photo chips to see if we'd got 'that shot'! Most of the section members have 100's of dives logged. We all have our top 10 experiences. For those on BJ that morning an old dive would have dropped out of their 10 and been replaced by Shark Cave 2015. â– Jon Tomkins

ANGLING

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING With 22 members in attendance, the Section AGM was held on 13th May. Rear Commodore Ian reported on the year’s activities, highlighting the successful major features, eg, junior’s fishing clinics, Harbour Classic boat fishing competition and participation in the AAA state boat titles. Increased numbers in the monthly competitions a goal for the future. Treasurer Morrie, also reported on a successful year, making special mention of the work done by Frank Pierucci with the Easter Raffle and of Paul Frzop for his efforts selling raffle tickets throughout the year, particularly at the major events.

were caught before being released. Winners on the day were: JUNIOR Ryan McDiarmid, 3 species and 47.446 points. LADY, Julie Loran 5 species 59,250 points. Man Denis Loran, 6 species, 93,674 points. All were presented with their prizes by Bill McPherson. Winner of the wheel spin was Peter McGrady with his 2.312Kg dhufish.

JUNE BOAT COMPETITION

A vote of thanks was extended to Rear Commodore Ian McCall for his tireless work for the section. And all positions were declared vacant before election of the 2015/2016 committee a s follows: Rear Commodore Section Captain Secretary Treasurer Boat Committee Rep House Committee Rep Records Officer Weigh in Officer Publicity Officer QAAA Boat Committee Rep

Bill McPherson Greg Mansell Andrea Pohl Morrie Elson Ian McCall Paul Frzop Paul Frzop Bill McPherson Brian Carter Paul Frzop

A junior rep is to be appointed from the juniors who are active members.

MAY BOAT COMPETITION

Once again, weather reports caused the postponement of the competition to 28th June. The weather on this day, however, was not much better with the west coast experiencing huge swells and winds in the 15 to 20 knot range with conditions expected to improve by noon. The competition was therefore declared a goer with a small field of 11 signing on. At the weigh in, only 5 species were represented with the majority of anglers weighing in a whiting and a herring. Several also had a skippy and Ian had a goat fish that was a club record, beating the previous record for goat fish (also held by Ian) by 19 grams while Denis had a nice banded sweep. Winners on the day were: Junior winner was Aiden Rinney with 2 species and 25.570 points from Lucas Pohl, 2 species, 25.538 points. Lady winner was Julie Loran with 2 species and 25.628 points Men’s winner was Ian McCall with 4 species and 46.932 points from Denis Loran, 3 species, 36.206 points.

With wet windy weather on the third Sunday of the month, the competition was postponed until the 24th May. The forecast for this week was excellent and 16 members signed on for the competition.

JULY BOAT COMPETITION

Rear Commodore (elect) Bill McPherson opened proceedings at the weigh in announcing that Jake Speed had been elected to the position of Junior Representative for the Angling Section and after nomination and secondment, Alan Partridge was elected as AAA representative. The weigh in then commenced resulting in 12 species presented with among the better specimen, Denis Loran’s 1.670Kg flathead, Ryan McDiarmid’s 5.415Kg shark and Denis Loran’s 13Kg Samson fish. Interestingly, few bread and butter fish such as herring and whiting were represented while anglers reported quite a few undersized demersals such as dhufish and pink snapper

26 Compass September 2015 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

The weather on 19th was for gale force winds, so the competition was postponed to 26th July. On the day the forecast was excellent and 13 anglers signed on for the competition. The weigh in provided 11 species with a record pike of

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

3,124Kg caught by Eric Lay the best fish of the day, although Ryan McDiarmid’s 4.653Kg Samson and 1,486Kg flathead were not far behind.

The skipper rang the coast guard to report the sighting. Within minutes, the Westpac chopper came over, closely followed by the choppers of channels 7 and 9.

All four juniors had good bags with Ryan’s 3 species and 47.946 points the winner, from Lucas Pohl’s 4 species and 46.744 points.

Time was on their side as the shark stayed around for 30 minutes or so, often only a metre from the side of the boat.

The man winner, with 5 species was Nick Fitt, with 58.240 points from Eric Lay, 4 species and 51.880 points

WEDNESDAY FISHING JULY 1ST This was a day the Wednesday anglers are still talking about. A report explaining the reason is provided by Alan Partridge. “6 fishers started the day using the mirage as Balaton was in dry dock. Following two drops offshore catching a gummy, under sized dhufish and a few sand whiting, we proceeded to a new spot approx 3.5km off Floreat. (With no GPS, position was guessed.) ‘Whiting were biting, suddenly the local birds flew away and a 4.5m shark came alongside the vessel and continued circling.

The shark was very placid and often its dorsal fin broke the surface and the claspers were clearly visible. All anglers continued fishing during the encounter as no danger was apparent. After 30 minutes or so, it became bored and took off into the wide blue beyond. Fishing continued to 2.00pm when we returned to Hillarys, to our surprize, we were met by reporters from 7 and 9 news for interviews. The subsequent events were shown on the evening news and the next day in the West Australian newspaper. Wednesday fishing will NEVER be the same.” Thanks Alan and Greg Mansell for the report and Surf Lifesaving photograph. ■ Brian Carter

DINGHY

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm

Our Presentation evening in early June was well attended by sailors, family and volunteers to celebrate another enjoyable year for our Dinghy Division. Awards included Club Championships and Consistency for the Summer race series, and the previous Winter Series, for all fleets. The Winter Series race days have had mixed success, including a lack of wind on one day. But it is always worth the effort to come to HYC to check if it is suitable to go for sail and see sailing friends. At time of writing we still have one race day remaining, so hopefully we can finish off the series with good weather. On the Saturday’s between the winter race days, there has been training provided with the emphasis on helping new sailors learn about dingy racing and also those people changing fleets. Also there has been specialist training for some of the Optimist sailors, including Jackson Porter who has recently placed well at an event in Queensland and will be going overseas in late August to take part in the World Championships. A Dinghy Development Plan has been adopted, and has resulted in a working group being created to research and recommend short and long term strategies and actions to help continuously improve all aspects of our sailing. Contributions to this group are welcomed. In late September we will have three of our Tasar boats taking part in their Australian Championships in Townsville,

Queensland. On 20 September all dinghy fleets, with the Keel fleets, will be taking part in Barts Bash which is the World’s largest sailing race. Also in September we have our registration day for the Summer racing which starts with the Club Opening Day in October. We wish all those taking part in events away from HYC the best of luck, and look forward to seeing all sailors and volunteers back at HYC. ■ Greg Jennings

KEELBOAT RACING

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm September 20: Bart’s Bash October 4: Opening Day

Salamander covers Dart Vader, Mulberry and Out the Back on the way to the finish line in the fourth winter race

With the Presentation Dinner just a warm glow in the memory of summer success, or otherwise, a cold though sunny morning greeted sailors in June as they braced themselves for the rigours of winter sailing. On the first day of the winter series, what must be a record, 24 yachts competed in the three divisions whilst new owners Brett and Lynda Bailey aboard Sensei watched from a safe distance. Over the ensuing weeks they joined in the racing along with other newbies: Mark Taylor on Helga, John Cable on Xtreme, Alan Wallace on Out the Back and Roric Smith on Juni. They have already shown that they will be very competitive with a few more nautical miles under the keel. Covert Operation and Tropical Itch are back from repair and racing rehabilitation began in earnest, so much so that Covert Operation went on to win the winter competition. Handicap starts, shortened courses and fading breezes tended to favour the front runners however overall there has been some very close racing. In Division One, consistent performances from Salamander, Synergy, Perle and Mulberry had them in front midway through the series whilst in Division Two it was Zinfandel, Sublime, Covert Operation and Farrouk ahead of the others. Catabatic and Sensei had a great battle

in JAM, relishing the absence of Vaya Con Dios who went up to Division One. In the final race Mulberry pipped Haywire by 3 secs and won the title by one point whilst Covert Operation and Catabatic won their respective divisions capping off the “best winter competition yet”. Thank you to Karen who has “manned” the start tower during winter which facilitated accurate timing and processing of results; very much appreciated. An innovation of allotting average points for a race missed due to participation in other sanctioned sailing events such as offshore races, Geographe Bay regatta or championships either as a competitor or an official will free up keel and dinghy members to pursue other horizons. The average will be based on three races close to the intended absence for which permission must be sought in advance. October will be a “come and try” month for prospective members and all sections of the club will be offering events to showcase the broad range of water and social activities available at Hillarys Yacht Club. This complements the Discover Sailing Day on Sunday November 1st so watch for the e-newsletters for the release of details and get involved.

CRUISING IN COMPANY

nd

September 13 - Come for a Sail

As we approach the summer sailing season many October 24-25 - Fremantle boat owners will Cruise be considering some form of November 14-15 - Longreach maintenance Cruise Hauling the vessel out for routine November 28-29 - Longreach repairs is the Cruise ideal opportunity for upgrades or simply to install some of those gadgets you've had your eye on.

September 26 - Stark Bay Cruise

One consideration whether you're simply sailing to Rotto or off cruising, would be the issue of cray pots and other floating debris fouling the prop. As with everything, there are numerous types of rope cutters to choose from and which one suits you best, will depend on your prop setup and budget. Fortunately a lot of research has already been done on this subject, which we have summarised below. There are 3 main types: Scissor type This design consists of a rotating cutter attached to the shaft and a fixed cutter bolted to the P bracket. As the prop draws debris down, the rotating blades create a scissoring effect against the fixed blade, chopping the debris up. Advantage: is the positive cutting action, shredding netting and weeds alike. Disadvantages: it can be complex to install; the blades need to be correctly aligned with the propeller blades to decrease interference with water flow into the prop; it requires its bearings to be changed approximately every second year; it can cause more drag than the other types; and they tend to be more expensive. If you have a saildrive, then the scissor type of rope cutter is your only option. Disc type

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

These cutters are a stainless steel disc with a cutting edge. Prop shaft mounting options can be either split and attached around the shaft, or slipped on the shaft by removing the prop. Both are secured to the shaft via a grub screw. As the disc rotates, any line that is drawn down to the prop is slowly cut as it passes over the edge of the disc. Advantages: they are simple to install; they have minimal drag; are comparatively inexpensive; and can be fitted to any shaft type. Disadvantage: they struggle to cut through some types of debris and many of the tests found that these would not cut through copper or steel wire. Shaver type Shavers are the newest type and consist of fixed blades attached to the P-bracket or stern tube. A plastic spool is placed ahead of the prop on the shaft, thus running under the cutter blades. The prop action forces debris into the gap between the blades and the prop and the spinning blades shave through the object. Advantages: decreased load on the structure and transmission during cutting; minimal loss of boat speed; and are priced between the scissor and disc types. Disadvantages: installation can be more complex; the stern tube or P bracket may require some strengthening; and accurate fitting may require a shop installation. Theoretically, anyone with decent DIY skills can install a cutter unit to their boat. However, in practice, the scissor and shaver units can be complicated to install, and both require precise and accurate positioning in order to prevent damage to the boat. On a more social note, as this goes to print the CIC is ending its Winter season with a bang, revelling in the ever popular Annual Progressive Dinner, and the Inter Club Cruising Dinner. The Progressive Dinner's theme this year was "Over the Top", hosted by Norm & Shelley, who last year sailed Over the Top from HYC to NSW and back, covering over 9500 miles. 10 cruising boats participated in the dinner, and a fantastic night was had by all. The Fancy Dress prize was awarded to Brian & Rita, for their 'over the top' costumes. â– Rob & Fran
