Lake Arrowhead Living OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER 2023

The Brimmer Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other golfers 15 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience through some good-natured competition among Golf Club members. Two golf members have participated in all 15 events, Sandy Reynolds and Rick Salese. Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Brimmer Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management on Tournament details. This year the Red Team Co-Captains were Al Schimmelman and Paul Bolding. The Blue Team captain was Mel Standley and his Co-Caption was Lee Heubner. Each team included 18 members. Matches on the first day of competition were played by 2-person teams in three different formats – best ball, alternate shot, and scramble. The Blue Team ended the first day of competition with a 15.5 -11.5 lead. Second day matches were all singles. The Blue team increased their lead with second day results of 11.5 Blue to 6.5 Red. The final results were Blue 27 and Red 18. In what was a very competitive event, the Blue Team earned bragging rights for the eighth year in a row. Special thanks to all the staff in the Pro Shop and The Highlands Grill for all they did to help make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.

MEMOIR & ORAL HISTORY Lunch & Learn with Bill Walsh October 16th 12pm-2pm | Clubhouse William Walsh is the director of the Reinhardt University Creative Writing Program, both undergraduate and M.F.A. program. The author of nine books, he has won several awards, including Georgia Author of the Year and the Cervena Barva Editor’s Prize. Everyone has a story! Is your story funny or tragic, or perhaps, both at the same time? Everyone has a unique voice to tell a story, but how do you tap into the deep cervices of memory? How do you put to paper (or the computer screen) the story burning to be told. No one else can write it for you, so for two hours, I will discuss the process of writing memoir and oral history, and how to find that nugget of gold. I’ve been publishing for more nearly 40 years so follow me on this two-hour journey and I will demonstrate how simple it can be. However, it is not without peril; otherwise, it would not be worth telling. RESERVE YOUR SPOT WITH THE CLUBHOUSE TODAY! 770-721-7900 X3

CIVIL WAR LUNCH & LEARN WITH DR. KENNETH WHEELER

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH | 6PM AT THE CLUBHOUSE Kenneth H. Wheeler is Professor of History and the Dean for the College of Humanities, Sciences, and Technology at Reinhardt University. He is the author of several articles on the history of Cherokee County and northern Georgia. His latest book is Modern Cronies: Southern Industrialism from Gold Rush to Convict Labor, 1829-1894. A resident of Lake Arrowhead, he is excited to talk with his neighbors about this place in another time. Think politics is rough today? Cherokee County during the Civil War was a cauldron of tensions. A mix of enslaved people and free, Confederates and Unionists, tried to survive, but the home front was fraught even before Federal troops arrived in 1864. From drought and shortages to the burning of Canton, hear the human stories and dilemmas that made the 1860s a searing period in the history of this area.

golf news 2023 POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP On Friday September 22, Paul Bolding defeated Bill Maynard on the last hole to win the 14th annual Points Championship. This event, which is possibly the most unique and pressure packed tournament of the year. According to the tournament rules, all ten players start at the same time, on the same hole. At the end of each hole, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated from the tournament. If two players tie with the highest score, a chip off is held to determine who advances. The closest to the hole continues unless there are 3 or more players in the chip off. In that case, the player that is farthest from the hole is eliminated. This process continues for nine holes until only one golfer remains. Golf members earn points throughout the year by playing in Club sponsored golf tournaments. They receive 10 points for participating in a tournament but can earn more by winning or finishing at least fourth in a tournament. Typically, ten members qualify to play in the Points Championship. This year we had a tie for 10th place, so we had 11 qualifiers. These qualifiers are pictured below. The format of the Points Championship, known specifically as a “nine hole shoot out” brings a different type of pressure than any other played in Lake Arrowhead. It is, for example, the only one where a high score on a hole can result in elimination from the tournament. In addition, it is the only tournament where family and friends follow along to cheer on their favorite participants. This adds a little extra excitement and pressure for the golfers in that almost every shot draws some type of vocal response from the crowd. For many of us, these pressures tend to turn our brains into mush, particularly in the early holes where elimination is disappointing.

GOLF MASQUERADE BALL Our end of Summer event, the so-called Golf Masquerade Ball (pun intended) was held Thursday August 17th. It may have been the end of Summer, but it felt like the beginning of Fall, which was great weather for the 13 participants to get out and play in our 9-hole scramble. Since we had an odd number of players, 3 teams were of 3 players each and the 4th team had 4 players. VP Natalie announced the tournament rules which provided for prizes based on: • Traditional scramble; • Closest to the pin on Hole #2 • Longest drive on Hole #12. In addition, Ian (Lake Arrowhead’s new Assistant Golf Pro) would blindly draw three numbers eliminating three holes from the scores, which we learned is a twist on regular play, known as Three Blind Mice. Those mice meant players not only needed to be good and lucky on the course, but also lucky with the draw. I already considered myself lucky since I was playing with Maureen and Natalie.

Our monthly Catfight wasn’t as well attended, I guess a few players believed the ugly weather report which turned out to be somewhat accurate. We started with 9 players, but then the rain started coming down when we were on the 2nd hole and a few players turned back. Thankfully, I stuck it out, as not long afterwards conditions improved. Ultimately, based on individual handicaps Patti took first place and Arra placed 2nd. Good job, Ladies. The LGA was well represented in the Club Championship with Eleanor Gibbons reclaiming the title as Club Champion. Lynn DeWolfe was Net Champion, with Arra placing 2nd Net. Another good job, Ladies. The Summer grand finale was our first “Party at the Lake”. What a party! Plenty of food, drinks, swimming, games and an overall good time! It might have been the first LALGA lake party but it won’t be the last. What a great way to end the Summer!

We were all blessed with a Shotgun Start (thanks to Uel) so pace of play moved along at a solidly deliberate speed that had us all back at the Clubhouse before Noon. Then (drum roll, please) Ian came in to draw the numbers. You could cut the tension with a knife (OK, a butter knife). Everyone cheered when Ian pulled the 8th Hole as the first hole eliminated from the scores. The next hole eliminated was #2 which made Ian temporarily less popular since a few teams, including ours, birdied #2. However, he promptly redeemed himself by drawing #1 as the final draw. Two out of three was pretty good. Our President, Arra, announced the winners as follows: 1st place Natalie, Maureen and Ruth. (No kidding! Lucky Me!) 2nd place Karen, Roz, Janice and Arra. Closest to pin, Arra. Longest drive, Paula. Congratulations to all. page 15

MEET THE LAPOA BOARD CANDIDATES BECKY HERNANDEZ

JAY CALDWELL

334 Cherokee Drive Waleska, GA 30183

118 Tulip Tree Court Waleska, GA 30183

My name is Becky Hernandez, and I am asking for your support for our POA board. I am a single mom of three children and a grandmother of two. I was drawn to this community for the safety it offers and its amazing amenities. Just like protecting my family, I am interested in protecting our community and the investment we have all made in choosing a home in Lake Arrowhead.

Jay Caldwell was born and raised in Massachusetts. He got entirely sick of the snow and gray winters and moved down to Georgia in 2007 and has never looked back.

My experience in Real Estate allows me to understand what keeps and grows a property’s worth. During my 16 years as a Real Estate agent, I learned the ins and outs of what people are looking for in a top-notch community. While working in Real Estate I also worked as a Property Management for luxury homes and condos in Marco Island, Florida. I handled all aspects of property management including budgeting and planning. I am still a person who values individuality and wants each homeowner in our community to feel they have true ownership of their property. I understand each person has their personalized style and I am not interested in micromanaging my neighbors. I am interested in helping our community grow and continue to be a sought-after community here in Cherokee County. After almost two decades in Real Estate, I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to work from home and watch my children grow up. I obtained my Property Casualty License and currently enjoy working in the Worker’s Compensation Field. I am asking for your vote. Thank you!

A former insurance professional for over fifteen years, he made a career change in 2014 to enter the IT space in Quality Assurance. He now manages a QA department for a startup company. Jay works from home, and is a full time resident of Lake Arrowhead. He has previously co-ran a volunteer community theatre company for 11 years and has a wealth of experience in event planning, volunteer coordination and more. Jay and his spouse Rhonda, are new additions to Lake Arrowhead as of January 2022 but already in love with their mountain community here.

JEANNE SCHWARTZ

327 Lakewood Drive Waleska, GA 30183

My husband Jeff and I moved to Lake Arrowhead in December of 2015. We both retired in 2021 and have been involved in the community since then. We have three kids: a son in Philadelphia, and daughters in New Lexington, OH and Woodstock, GA. They have blessed us with five grandchildren: two boys in PA and three girls here, ranging in ages from 4- 9. My professional career is summarized below: Strategic, accomplished senior executive with broad and deep experience in innovation and business strategy, internal start-ups, strategy alignment and communication, consumer insight-driven growth, brand strategy, development, fundraising and applied foresight.

community interest Pioneer in creating and implementing innovation and foresight capabilities in F500 company. Identified strategic growth business opportunities, created business cases and incubated new businesses ranging from solar project protection designed to satisfy investor requirements, to a three-tier mini-med program to satisfy needs of the uninsured, to a forward-designed funeral planning and caregiver consultation bundle. In addition, I served on the board and staff of Grameen Foundation, an international NGO leading teams of fundraisers, development professionals, and marketing and communications staff. If elected to serve, my focus will be on communications within Lake Arrowhead, listening through research and community involvement and serving as the liaison to the communications committee, which I recruited upon being appointed to the board. The committee is populated with six talented and enthusiastic communicators. Our first Blast will be sent out the first week of September, and we will be committing to a regular, transparent cadence of information to educate, involve and hopefully entertain the residents of our community. If you’d like to join, please let us know! Thank you for your consideration.

STEVE THOMA

My wife, Ramy, and I discovered Lake Arrowhead in 2015 and immediately fell in love with the area and community. Various corporate relocations have taken us all over the country including Seattle, Tampa, St Louis, and Atlanta but Lake Arrowhead has always been at the top of our list for our next home. That dream became a reality this year and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Everyone has been warm and welcoming, and we look forward to getting more actively involved in the community. I'm currently an NCR executive director with an extensive background in software development, project management, quality and customer satisfaction. I'm a Navy veteran and member of the Masonic fraternity and Shriners organization. My hobbies include travel, photography, and outdoor

activities. I've also served as President, Vice President, and Website Administrator for the Peachtree Miata Club for the last 10 years. I look forward to meeting more of my new neighbors and contributing my skills and experiences to help Lake Arrowhead maintain its beauty and amenities for all property owners.

RICH CHAPMAN

My wife, Kelly, and I purchased a home in Lake Arrowhead in December of 2021 after becoming empty nesters. I currently work as a Senior Project Manager at Intertek in Kennesaw, Georgia. I am a Building Envelope Consultant, which means I consult on roofs, exterior walls, foundations, and pavement. I perform Property Condition Assessments, commercial home inspections, on everything from shopping centers to high rise buildings. I assess everything in and outside the building. I am knowledgeable in most things when it comes to construction. I have managed people and projects all my life, mostly in construction, but in manufacturing as well. I have always been active in my church, my community, and in my professional organization. I have been the president of the United Methodist Men, Lead and participated in mission trips, been the secretary, treasurer, VP and president of IIBEC (International Institute of Building Envelope Consultants) Georgia, and served on committees in my past neighborhoods. I am an Eagle Scout. Kelly and I are finally, almost, settled in and want to plug in to our community. We attend Canton First United Methodist Church and are slowly plugging in there. I am eager to become an active part of the Lake Arrowhead community. If you vote for me I will diligently work for you to make Lake Arrowhead a better place moving forward. Grace be with you.

BOB WEATHERFORD

306 Feather Perch Waleska, GA 30183

151 Hawks Trail Waleska, GA 30183

Hello, my name is Trevor Allison and I'm a proud resident and homeowner within this wonderful community. As a dedicated husband, father, and veteran, my commitment to family and service forms the core of my values.

I am Bob Weatherford, and I am running for an open seat on our board. Lisa and I built our dream home here on Hawks Trail and moved in December. I would like to lend my extensive experience in planning and zoning as well as an elected official to the board. I have also served as VP of my HOA in Cobb.

I firmly believe that the essence of a thriving community lies in striking a delicate balance between preserving its natural beauty and pursuing opportunities for growth. With a strong sense of direction, I am dedicated to ensuring that any endeavors undertaken benefit and uplift both ourselves and our fellow neighbors. To me, each resident who chooses to call this community home is not merely a resource but a valuable asset that enriches our shared experience. Recognizing and celebrating the wonderful people who form the backbone of our neighborhood is essential to fostering a sense of unity and harmony among us. As a member of the POA board, I pledge to work to uphold our community's values, maintain its beauty, and pave the way for progress. With open communication, cooperation, and transparency, we can foster an environment that thrives on inclusivity and collaboration. I kindly request your support in considering my nomination to serve on the POA board. Together, we can continue to build a remarkable community where each resident feels cherished, heard, and empowered. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I’ve served as an Elected Official for 16 years, 12 of those as Mayor Pro Tem of Acworth and four as Cobb County Commissioner. I’ve worked collaboratively with Elected Officials and Staff at all levels and have served on numerous boards and positions at GMA (Georgia Municipal Association), as well as ACCG (Association of County Commissioners of Georgia). I currently serve on Arbitration panels for DCA (Dept. of Community Affairs). I have worked and served with elected officials in Cherokee including the Chairman of the BOC. I was also on the Cobb Board that brought the Braves to Cobb. I believe my experience in planning and zoning in Cobb would be an asset to our POA here in Lake Arrowhead. I have a BA Degree in Math from Huntingdon College in Montgomery and spent most of my career in high tech field with over 30 years at Amdahl and STK Corporations in consulting and professional services sales. I now work for AT&T as Account Manager. I believe the board needs experience and expertise from all different disciplines. I know it is a thankless job and would require commitment. I believe communication is the key and I will do my best to be responsive to all. I would appreciate your consideration as your board member.

Brighten up your most valuable asset with a fresh coat of paint.

community interest READING FOR THE AGES by Jeanne Schwartz Tom Lake | Ann Patchett | Harper Collins Ann Patchett is a beloved author, who has written about subjects as diverse as musicians being held captive by terrorists in her break-out book Bel Canto – to this book, Tom Lake, that is as soothing as a summer day, celebrating familial love, story-telling and the beauty of life. Lara, who used to have a “u” in her name until she saw Dr. Zhivago, is at home in the cherry orchards of Michigan with her husband Tom, working the trees, when their three daughters join them in March of 2020, for pandemic or other reasons. No matter. The family has time together and the girls want to know the story of their mom’s long-ago relationship with a man who would later be a movie star. The two performed together in Our Town when Lara was 19. Was Peter Duke – think McDreamy - the father of one of them? How did stardom rub off on them, or not? What was their claim to him? How in the world did their mother have a life this interesting when she was just their mom? Lara’s husband Tom is remarkably secure in his marriage, and is not bothered a whit by this story-telling. He even joins in from time to time: “They just want to know about the sex…” He directed the summer stock production and played the role of the Stage Manager in Our Town himself a few times. More important, he was witness to the outlines of Lara’s relationship with Duke and Duke’s brother Sebastian. But in addition to the nuclear family in the orchards, and the cast of memory, Thornton Wilder’s play Our Town is a character of its own. Lara plays Emily Gibbs: first in high school, then in summer stock theater in Michigan, near Tom Lake, where she meets her co-star Duke. Our Town reveals the facts of life and death in an extraordinarily brief, spare, three acts. (And Ann Patchett says one of the goals of this book is to return people to the gentleness, power, and universality of the play, which packs truth into a visceral punch). Emily Gibbs, who is the tragic heroine of Wilder’s play, is one Lara feels destined to play. And in fact, she inhabits the character throughout her life. Any question of an expanded role in theater is out of the question for her. “I was Emily because that was the only thing I knew how to do. I had the range of a box turtle. I was excellent, as long as no one moved me.” She could have picked worse wagons to which to hook her star. Her success in the play was due to her simply being Emily, not over-acting. But her relationship with Duke, who plays her father in the play, does get enmeshed in the summer stock theater legend of steamy sex as the two try to disguise their obvious physical magnetism on stage. page 26

And so, what happened? Was Lara’s daughter Emily the product of this love affair? There are hints thrown in that this might indeed be the case. How did Lara end up with Tom in the cherry orchard near Tom Lake and not with Duke? The orchard - and the farm - captivate each of the characters, including Duke, who saw it as a rock, a steadying force in his chaotic life. Its beauty and stillness are a muffler, a blanket of reassurance; not only during the pandemic, but permanently. And the sweet, countrified ways of the place allow for life lessons to be imparted in calm and magical ways. As she is re-telling the story of her life to her daughters, Lara struggles to recall details that all at once don’t seem so important. The fabric of her experience is not dependent upon the individual threads. As Lara puts it: “There is no explaining this simple truth about life: you will forget most of it.” Ann Patchett is not a mother, yet her descriptions of her love for her children couldn’t be more authentic. Quoting from The Washington Post: as Lara is comforting Nell, her youngest daughter, she muses: “ I want to tell her she’ll never be hurt, that everything will be fair, and that I will always, always be there to protect her. No one sees us but the swallows looping overhead. She puts her arms around my waist and we stand there, just like that, casting a single shadow across the grass.” Read Tom Lake, and then, as Ann Patchett would have you do, return to Our Town and read it again. It is truly miraculous in its power and longevity. “Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? – every, every minute?” Tom Lake is Ann Patchett’s ninth novel. She has also published five works of non-fiction, both memoirs and essays, and spent the beginning of her career working for Seventeen magazine, until she got into a dispute with the editor, exclaiming, “I’ll never darken your door again.” Our Town was first performed in 1938, and won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in that year Eighty-five years later, the show is performed at least once every night somewhere in the United States and throughout the world.

Did you know that leaks through small cracks around your windows and doors are responsible for 30-40% of the heat that leaks out of your house? Grab your hammer and join the show! In Atlanta, 404.872.0750 or 1.800.972.8255. Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Dave Baker is WSB’s resident household repair and home improvement expert! He provides a multitude of tips and advice on planning, building and fixing up around the house. Follow Dave on his Facebook page: Facebook.com/ thehomefixitpage

It’s time to give your house that once over for cracks and areas where the cooler air will seep in and more importantly, your heat will leak out. Begin outside by looking at places where two different building materials meet and around every opening in your siding i.e. around water spigots, dryer vents, and places where telephone and TV cables enter the house. Fill all openings and cracks with caulk or expanding insulating foam. page 28

Once inside your home, look at the following: Ʌ Check around electrical outlets. You can get inexpensive foam gaskets to seal every outlet. Make sure your pull down attic stairs are sealed as well. Ʌ Measure the temperature in different parts of the house. Differences of a couple of degrees or more indicate that the room is poorly sealed or that air movement inside the house is poor. If some rooms are cooler than others, your favorite HVAC company can help you zone your house properly to even out the air flow. Ʌ It’s time to weather strip windows, doors, and garage doors. It’s simple and inexpensive. Ʌ Get your caulk gun back out and seal between baseboards and floors. Remove the base molding and fill in the gap between baseboards and floor. This will not only stop air leaks, but will help seal out insects as well. One last thing to check – if you have windows in unused parts of the house, think about sealing them for the window with a shrink wrap. Once installed, shrink wrap is virtually invisible and easy to remove. The best part of all of this work is that when it gets warm out again, all of these steps will help keep your cool air in (and insects out).
