No one really wants to see someone in court

Brianne Conley of No. 14 Prioritizes Personal Touch

"After two years in business, we know exactly who our girl is,"

But if you’re facing criminal charges in Pittsburgh, one person you’ll want to see is criminal defense lawyer David J. Shrager (but only if he’s on your side). “I think the most rewarding thing about my job is that you get to actually help people,” said Shrager. “It is very rewarding being able to see the positive changes in clients’ lives.”

said Brianne Conley, of Lawrenceville’s No. 14. “We make every decision with her in mind, from buying new inventory to styling our displays.”

Early on in his career, Shrager studied at the University of Pittsburgh where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude. However, his path eventually took him down south, from the City of Bridges to the sun and palm trees in Florida. There, he earned his law degree from the University of Miami Law School on academic scholarship and passed the Florida bar. But family and friends encouraged him to take the Pennsylvania bar, too, just in case. While he was taking the bar in his home state, he received a job offer, and the rest is history.

Just as Conley has gravitated toward this number, she always has gravitated toward fashion. Conley studied strategic communication at High Point University, which involves the study of expressing a concept to satisfy a longterm goal. And if that’s the case, her store meets the aim of flattering a woman’s lines for any occasion. “More than anything, we have learned to stay true to ourselves and to continually seek ways to improve our business. We spend a lot of time researching new brands and different approaches to our business. Our clients look to us to provide them with fresh inventory and innovative styling.”

Family and friends may have encouraged him to come back to Pittsburgh, but it’s the people that have kept him around. “We have the best people in the world. They’re kind, down to earth, and generous people.” And that also goes for the team of people he works with. Collectively, Shrager Defense Attorneys have more than six decades of experience defending clients, and that’s something Shrager attributes to their work ethic. “You only get out of something what you put into it. Whether we are defending a DUI, a drug case, or a homicide, my team puts their heart and soul into their work and it shows.”

David J. Shrager Is Guilty

of Pouring his Heart and Soul into Pittsburgh 16

When Conley opened the clothing boutique with her mother, Michelle, in 2014, No. 14 reflected her graduation year and boyfriend’s football number. But now, it means so much more. “I wanted it to represent the person I was at the time we opened. It celebrates the memories I want to cherish and the memories I am yet to make.”

But whatever you’re looking for, you can always count on a personalized touch from No. 14. The boutique doesn’t list items online anymore, but if a customer fancies something on Instagram or Snapchat, Conley is happy to process the transaction through email or over the phone. No. 14 4601 Butler Street www.no14boutique.com Instagram: @no14boutique Snapchat: No_14lville

Maybe No. 14 means something personal for Conley, but to customers, it could be a hard limit of purchased items they have to keep themselves to.

Dallas Sauers Nails Down

Is she a Diva? Yes, a Diva for her clients.

What It Takes for Success Like any Cinderella story, Dallas Sauers’s tale started with a dream and a risk.

Lauren Klein, better known as the Pittsburgh Property Diva, created her real estate persona as a way to let clients know she’ll fight for them with unmatched dedication and commitment. The real estate process can be hard to work through, and Lauren acts as a mediator to make it a smooth transition from one home to the next. Lauren is a born-and-raised Pittsburgher who truly knows what it’s like to live in the city. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and went on to get a master’s degree in forensic science from Duquesne University. In 2008, she started selling real estate and soon found her niche. Today, she and her husband (who is also her business partner) Chris Klein reside in Pittsburgh with their seven children.

After years of work in the salon industry, from ages 14 to 21, Sauers decided to break out and start something on her own. “I quit and borrowed $536 from my dad,” said Sauers. “I knew I could create an environment that was posh, clean, and big on education. I still have the receipt for $536.” In July 2012, Sauers opened Dallas Beauty Lounge, a nail salon that sets itself apart from other Pittsburgh establishments in many ways. “I am a national educator for Nail Alliance, which allows me to learn the newest trends and techniques in our headquarters in Los Angeles and bring them back to Pittsburgh.” New services include Microblading, performed by the head esthetician, who’s a national educator on all things brows, and soon Dallas Beauty Lounge will be adding blowouts to its service menu in a new location. Another thing that makes Dallas Beauty Lounge stand out is its exclusive clientele. “Our clients are actually all referred by each other, so you only send your best friends and family. Hence, why our clients are so amazing.” The staff at Dallas Beauty Lounge is also pretty extraordinary, taking education classes and participating in volunteer work to put them a notch above the rest. “Each year, we have certain standards we need to uphold for each staff member. But I never have to force them to do extra work because they’re all awesome.”

Dallas Beauty Lounge 609 Washington Pike atdallasbeautylounge.com Facebook/Instagram: @dallasbeautylounge 18

But unlike Cinderella, Sauers won’t be turning back any time soon. “I love being a cool new business in a city that’s growing like ours. I think Pittsburgh’s the perfect place to have a fabulous life.”

Business has been especially booming for Lauren since Pittsburgh has been experiencing a renaissance. Today, the city is more than a former steel town. “Pittsburgh is now on the scene as a vibrant, growing, and diverse city,” said Lauren. “We are seeing a large influx of relocation to the area, and I am looking forward to the opportunities that influx presents for our real estate market."

Those wishing to buy or sell their homes can connect with Lauren at pittsburghpropertydiva.com or call her at 412-628-8286. Follow Klein at Pittsburgh Property Diva on Facebook.

She may set high expectations for her clients, but Lauren is very approachable and only wants the best for those living in Pittsburgh. Moving into your dream home is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life, and Lauren wants to make it as least stressful as possible. When it comes to your next move, let her be the Diva for you.

Vito Gerasole Puts

The BIG EASY refers to the animal hospital’s New Orleans background,

the ‘Pop’ in Old School Soda Pop

For Vito Gerasole, there’s nothing like twisting Jay Lioon is the owner and creative artist behind Vinoglam, a made-to-order, hand-painted custom a glassware company. Whether you’re open bottle cap,

since owner and operator Dr. Aileen Ruiz relocated to Pittsburgh after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. But The BIG EASY title also aptly describes the clinic’s take on helping animals in need, with a boundless, open heart.

Jay Lioon Believes in Great, Lasting Impressions By Megan McLachlan

Ruiz brings years of industry experience to Pittsburgh. In 1998, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida International University. After graduation, she attended Ross University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Soon after, she took on an internship in New Orleans, where she happily lived until Hurricane Katrina. She moved to Pittsburgh to rebuild her life and bring a bit of NOLA flair to the Steel City.

looking for the perfect gift or a party favor, Lioon can provide you with a personalized present. She works closely with each client to make sure their design is exactly the way they want it. Lioon believes in lasting impressions and that’s what Vinoglam, and her business style in general, are all about.

hearing that “psst” sound, and enjoying one of Red Ribbon’s bubbly refreshments. This simple gesture, which is an automatic action for so many, is what initially piqued his interest and convinced him to purchase the 112-year-old Natrona Bottling Company when it was on the brink of extinction.

In 2010, Ruiz opened The BIG EASY as Pittsburgh’s first, and currently only, Hispanic veterinary hospital. In addition to being a full-service medical facility, it also offers in-house diagnostics and surgical facilities. And she doesn’t turn away any animal. Some dogs have even become full-time residents of Dog Daze, the establishment’s daycare and boarding section. So Ruiz saves dogs’ lives in a physical sense and even emotionally, providing them with a forever home they so desperately need. Since 2010, The BIG EASY has only continued to grow and offer more services to pets and their owners. The new Dog Daze Café allows dog parents to enjoy Cuban pastries and coffee while their furry friends are groomed. Nearly 40 dogs are in doggy daycare every day, often reaching full capacity on the weekends. Pittsburgh is lucky to have a professional like Ruiz, someone with such BIG EASY affection and experience, watching over its area animals.

Aileen Ruiz

BIG EASY Love in the 'Burgh 20

“This is the pop my parents and grandparents grew up on, and I thought this gem should not be ignored,” says the self-proclaimed “Sultan of Soda.” In 2010, Gerasole took the reins of the bottling plant located in the Allegheny Valley, which produces Red Ribbon soda pops. “There is nothing like our product for hundreds of miles. There are only a handful of small bottling plants left in America that produce soda pop in the manner we do.” Natrona Bottling Company utilizes Pinpoint Carbonation, a process in which dry ice helps carbonate the beverages. Pinpoint Carbonation creates “tiny bubbles” as opposed to the larger, gassier bubbles produced through CO2 infusion. The recipes are the originals, include pure cane sugar, and every small batch is mixed by hand with vintage machinery. These unique differences give Gerasole’s products a crisp, smooth balance and refreshing quality.

Business continues to grow for this little jewel tucked in Pittsburgh’s back pocket. Natrona Bottling Company products can be purchased as far west as Chicago and locally in Giant Eagle grocery stores. Recently, Gerasole moved into craft bar mixing, with Jamaica’s Finest Ginger Beer being a favorite in the expanding Pittsburgh bar scene. Gerasole also added Seltzer, Tonic, and Mint Ginger Ale to the company’s repertoire.

4 NATRONA DRINK RECIPES

for Your Next Party BY VITO GERASOLE AND ERIKA CLARK

{ WHO WE’RE FOLLOWING ON INSTAGRAM }

Ever been to a bar downtown and wished you could replicate the drink you’re enjoying? Natrona Bottling Company products are in some of the best bars and restaurants in Pittsburgh, including Täkō, where master bartender Erika Clark utilizes Red Ribbon mixers and Jamaica’s Finest Ginger Beer for its quality and versatility. Here are a few recipes Clark likes to incorporate into her bar program that are simple enough to mix and enjoy at your next cocktail party.

Tequila Collins:

Perfect Peach:

1.5 oz of any Silver Tequila .75 oz Lemon Juice .75 oz simple syrup 2 dashes of orange bitters

2 oz vodka 1.5 oz peach nectar

Shake and pour into a collins glass with 4 oz of Red Ribbon Tonic and a squeezed orange slice.

Pimm’s Cup: 1 oz Pimm’s 1 oz spiced rum 1.5 oz lemonade Shake and pour into a collins glass already filled with 3 oz Red Ribbon Mint Ginger Ale, a cucumber slice, and a mint spring. This drink is really versatile and can be made ahead of time as a punch with the addition of apples or cucumbers marinating like sangria.

Squeeze a lemon wedge into a large highball, add ingredients, top with ice and Red Ribbon Seltzer, stir. Red Ribbon Seltzer is great with your favorite gin or vodka; use just as you would club soda.

1. The Pittsburgh Film Office’s Lights! Glamour! Action! was the perfect excuse to wear this gorgeous Stephen Yearick gown from Anne Gregory For The Bride. I have never felt more glam and even though I can’t be a movie star, why not dress like one for previewing Pittsburgh’s premier Oscar party? 2. At Riverlife’s Party at the Pier 2016 to support beautifying our riverfronts, I got to play dress-up on the Setting the SEEN pink carpet with my co-host, Post-Gazette style editor Sara Bauknecht. I loved this look from ModCloth. The dress is Chi Chi London, the belt is from BCBG, and the jewelry is from Brilliant Nuevo Diamonds. Plus, Izzazu Salon, Spa & Serata gave me a retro-glamhair-and-makeup moment to remember! One of the best parties of the season, the event takes place at the end of August and right along the North Shore waterfront for a truly memorable backdrop. 3. I love a theme party! Chatham Baroque’s annual party in January doesn’t disappoint, and the theme in 2015 was funeral chic. Who doesn’t love a dramatic moment? Leave it to Richard Parsakian of Eons Fashion Antique to help me get into character and be ready for my close-up with Victorian-era clothes from his private collection.

MY TOP FAVORITE FASHION MOMENTS BY NATALIE BENCIVENGA

26

As the SEEN editor at the Pittsburgh PostGazette, I chronicle all of the amazing events happening around our fair city. One of the best parts of the job is getting to dress up all the time and try on different personas. People often ask me where I get my clothes or where I keep them all. I love high-end designers as much as the next fashionista-in-training, but I pull inspiration for looks from all over, whether it be vintage stores like Eons in Shadyside, Boutique La Passerelle Downtown, or even Rent the Runway when something is calling to me (but is out of the budget). Here are some of my favorite looks from some of the coolest events that you just have to be SEEN attending!

8. When you want understated black-tie glamour for a posh party like Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s 125th anniversary (and you are going to be interviewing Joe Manganiello), you have to up your game. Why not a high-low spiderweb-laced black dress from Monique Lhuillier (through Rent the Runway), sparkling Manolo Blahnik heels, and BCBG belt? (It doesn’t hurt to have a fashionable plus one like Sarah Thomas Drawbaugh on your arm, either!) Want to know what great events are coming up? Follow Natalie on Twitter @NBSeen, on Instagram @NatalieBenci and look for her weekly webshow: Setting the SEEN both on Facebook and online at: post-gazette.com/settingtheseen.

4. Frick Pittsburgh presents Killer Heels 2016. This party opened the big Killer Heels traveling exhibition in June, showing off the fanciest footwear throughout history. To share in the magic, I wore shoes by Pittsburgh-based designer Emy Mack, a Vivienne Westwood dress from Maxalto, and since I was feeling the vibe of this punk, posh dress, some cool victory curls set by Izzazu. 5. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Spring Hat Luncheon is one of the premier springtime events to be SEEN at wearing a fabulous over-the-top hat. My first year attending, I was lucky enough to wear a chic custom-designed Gina Mazzotta topper to go with my AllSaints snake-print silk wrap dress. It was a cold May day, but I was feeling wonderful. It’s amazing what a hat can do to make even a dreary day seem bright! The event supports the beautification of our wonderful city parks and is not to be missed. 6. I love the Pittsburgh Opera and my first year covering the beloved Maecenas gala that closes the season in May, I opted for a vintage dress from a pop-up shop in New York City I had visited a few years back. The dress was waiting for the right moment to make its debut and was part of an estate sale of a costumer for Hollywood starlets in the 1940s and 50s. Every time I wear it, I feel transported to a truly glamorous time in history (and no party is more glam than Maecenas!). And how lucky was I to have my lovely younger sister, Mia, attend with me? 7. It was a big night for the Andy Warhol Museum, celebrating the unveiling of the Halston exhibit a few years back. I decided to go blue in a flowing BCBG gown, hair by Studio Booth, and a little classic Chanel bag to tie it all together. My plus-one, the gorgeous Anna Ciaccio, and I had a fabulous night, and I always thank photographer John Colombo for dubbing this picture “Sex in Our City!”

And, as with many artists, Smith is usually his own worst critic. “My style evolved by taking on new challenges and never settling for something other than my vision,” said Smith. “I know how I want something to look and I don’t stop until I achieve that.” Remarkably, Ben Smith Studios’ origin had an early start—going back when Smith was in school, drawing on sneakers when he grew bored. “My friends would see the designs when I wore them around and started asking me to do custom art on their shoes. It began as a way to pass time during the classes I hated but ended up being a way to have my artwork seen.” Working in fashion was just a natural next step. “I liked providing artwork that was being seen and used every day. It was an outlet for my customers to wear something made to order,” said Smith. “Other people seemed to crave that, too, so I stuck with it.” Since then, Smith has branched out into many leather goods, including shoes, bags, clothing, and even custom detailing on cars. For right now, Smith is focusing on collaborations he will be finishing in 2016 and 2017, several ambitious pieces that play with the upcoming voting and holiday seasons.

tommosser.com Tom Mosser’s artwork can be found anywhere from PNC Park to the Prudential Arena in Los Angeles. He’s a well-known name in the Pittsburgh area, with one of his most notable creative accomplishments being the “At the Museum” series. This group of paintings depicts a person, or even a dog, standing in front of an art piece at a museum. Mosser created the “A Golden Retriever at the Museum” series, which took the Internet by storm. The painting was modeled after his own dog, and a Facebook page was soon created based on its success. Be sure to check out of all of his other work, including self-portraits, caricatures, and loop-technique pieces.

Pittsburgh is filled with true artists, from the folks who decided to put fries on salads to Andy Warhol. Here are a few of the best art events from 2016.

ART ALL NIGHT artallnight.org/wp Art All Night, located in Lawrenceville, is a free community art show put together by volunteers during the last weekend in April. The show invites people to showcase their work. With live music, free beer, and endless art, it’s a night everyone should attend. Lawrenceville is known for its love of art and architecture, and the community uses this event as a spotlight on the uniqueness of the neighborhood. Thousands danced and enjoyed art this year, and 2017 will celebrate 20 years for Art All Night.

HIDDEN HARBOR Squirrel Hill is not the first place that comes to mind when asking, “Where can I go for a great tiki drink?” but it’s exactly where one should go to find that answer. Step off of Shady Avenue and into Hidden Harbor, situated right next door to Independent Brewing Company (both are co-owned by Adam Henry, Matt Kurzweg, and Peter Kurzweg). The décor is kitschy-chic, with white walls, nautical touches, and a turquoise mermaid presiding over the bar.

It doesn’t take much effort these days to find Pittsburgh in articles and on lists for its restaurant scene, which has seen incredible growth and welldeserved accolades, with no signs of slowing down. From a small-batch ice cream purveyor to nationally recognized tapas, Pittsburgh’s eating establishments are making it truly exciting to go out to eat. We give you Maniac Magazine’s Best Restaurants in 2016.

The cocktails served at Hidden Harbor are refined tiki drinks. Gone are the saccharine sweet piña coladas of yesterday. Instead, the talented bartenders are slinging well-thought-out drinks like the Kokomo, with coconut-washed vodka, hibiscus, ginger beer, lime, and falernum. One sip and the tropics wash over you like a gentle rolling beach tide. The Leaf & Bean is warming and delightful, featuring rye whiskey, Kona coffee, allspice, tobacco bitters, and a smoking cinnamon stick. Lovers of rum will appreciate the rum tastings on the menu, as well as the vast rum choices on the wall behind the bar. Hidden Harbor’s food menu is made up of small plates like pork sliders, jackfruit sliders, tacos, and seared tuna, which pair perfectly with the tropical flavors of the drinks. Hidden Harbor is located at 1708 Shady Avenue. Visit www.hiddenharborpgh.com for more information.

MILLIE’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

APTEKA

Honing in on Pittsburgh’s strong Eastern and Central European roots, Apteka’s owners, Kate Lasky and Tomasz Skowronski, are creating soulful, made-from-scratch, affordable food with a thoroughly modern twist. The twist? Everything at Apteka is vegan. It’s a fresh idea, yet it also taps into what traditional peasant food is in Poland and other Eastern European countries: vegetableheavy cuisine, where meat is often seen as a luxury, only served on holidays. At Apteka, even the most die-hard carnivore won’t miss the meat.

Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream started out as a hobby for Chad Townsend, formerly of Salt of the Earth, and his wife Lauren. It has turned into a flourishing local business with a brick and mortar shop in Shadyside and a production house in Homewood. Entering the shop on South Highland in Shadyside, with its white subway-tiled walls, wood finishes, and cheerful pink accents, ice cream fans (and who isn’t one?) are faced with the typical ice cream flavors one would expect and seasonal offerings. But Millie’s Homemade is anything but “typical.” Chad and Lauren locally source their milk, cream, and eggs for their ice cream base, pasteurizing inhouse. They take great care to see that they are churning out the best product possible.

Here you’ll find luxurious barszcz, creamy beet soup served with celeriac toast, and Golabki, little rolls of cabbage stuffed with roasted tomato and buckwheat. Apteka also offers the beloved pierogi in sauerkraut and mushroom, or smoked potato, parsnip, and turnip green, served with a brushstroke of yogurt and mustard. As a completely vegan restaurant, Apteka is always looking forward, but also looking back and honoring the cuisine of a group of people who made Pittsburgh what it is today, and doing it deliciously. Apteka is located at 4606 Penn Avenue. Visit www.aptekapgh.com for more information.

42

Flavors are vibrant and sing of the seasonal fruit harvests, like the Concord Grape Sorbet that is currently being offered. Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream is located at 232 South Highland Avenue. Check out their website, www.millieshomemade.com for locations selling their ice cream by the pint.

THE ABBEY ON BUTLER Housed in a formal funeral home, The Abbey on Butler is a unique addition to Pittsburgh’s restaurant landscape. The sprawling restaurant offers a number of experiences due to the idea of owners Eric Kukura and Chris McAleer to turn it into a mixed-use space.

Courtesy of The Abbey on Butler

At Commonplace Coffee, the super-trendy nitro coffee is served, along with a variety of teas and house-made pastries. The Abbey is also a place to go to lunch (or brunch, if it is Sunday) or dinner. The menus highlight local artisans, like fish ’n chips where the fish is beer-battered with beer from North Versailles’ Full Pint Brewery, and bangers and mash, which feature a stone-ground mustard sauce sharpened by Wigle Whiskey. If a good drink is on your menu, The Abbey has a substantial craft cocktail and beer list, coupled with a large bar in the front, an intimate bar in the back, and a sweeping patio outside, making it the perfect place for tucking into a draft or two. There’s a late-night menu to pair with your brew as you head toward the wee hours of the morning.

MORCILLA

Oh, and The Abbey has its own parking lot, which is a rarity, especially in bustling Lawrenceville. The Abbey is located at 4635 Butler Street. For their various hours, please visit their website at www.theabbeyonbutler.com.

Not many people would have guessed that the best pintxos this side of Barcelona would be found in Pittsburgh, but after Morcilla opened in December 2015, it is undoubtedly true. The second restaurant of the husband-and-wife team of Chef Justin Severino and Hilary Prescott Severino has garnered national attention, most recently being named No. 4 on the list of Bon Appétit’s “Hot 10: America’s Best New Restaurants.”

THE VANDAL

Morcilla focuses on Spanish pintxos (tapas) and small plates made for sharing. Severino spent considerable time researching Spanish cuisine, traveling to Spain, and it shows. Slide up to the standing-only bar in the front of the restaurant, and perch yourself over small bites and a fantastic, well-curated list of Spanish wines. Or grab a table (you’ll need a reservation) and order to your heart’s delight in the rustic dining room.

Tucked between Arsenal Bowling and The Teddy Bear Hospital on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, you’ll find The Vandal, with its Instagrammable white-washed walls, wood floors, and chalkboard menu. Chef Csilla Thackray and owner Joey Hilty have created a restaurant that works practically any time of day. In the morning, stop for a delightful breakfast sandwich, perfectly eggy with salty bites of ham, and a cup of Parlor Coffee, or pop in after work for one of their highly-touted Vandal cheeseburgers—a blessedly simple burger of beef, cheese, tomato, mayo, and pickles that truly is about letting the quality of ingredients sing. While there are a few staples at The Vandal—the cheeseburger, for example—the small, concise menu is focused on seasonality. Chef Thackray sources as many local ingredients as she can, from the vegetables to the proteins, and the menu changes frequently, which keeps it interesting and fresh for customers. The Vandal is also BYOB, and they don’t charge for corkage.

The food is gorgeous. The charcuteria features cured meats and small snacks like marcona almonds. Of note is the Jamon Iberico de Bellota, which is aged four years from pigs that feast on acorns. The Iberico is silky and nutty and divine. A menu of mariscos, cured seafood, taps into the diner’s adventurous side. There are crispy, fried croquetas and small plates that touch on the beauty of Spanish cuisine: fruity olive oils, briny seafood, pork in various forms, wines with a crisp sea-kissed salinity to cut through all that pork fat.

The Vandal is located at 4306 Butler Street. Visit www.thevandalpgh.com for more information.

Try – try hard – to save room for the churros: light-as-air fried dough dipped in a deep dark chocolate sauce. Morcilla is located at 3519 Butler Street. Visit morcillapittsburgh.com for more information.

DAYA

IS SITTING PRETTY BY SARAH LOLLEY, PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATHAN JOHNSON

MM: Any siblings? D: I have four sisters. It was great. I had four automatic best friends growing up. We are all hard workers and dedicated to what we do. My older sister is an artist and so talented. My younger sisters are into acting and sports. We are all in our different lanes so we don’t compete with each other. MM: What does your dad think of living in a hen house? D: He is pretty chill about it. We have a boy dog, so that’s his friend in the house. Everyone just mistakes him for a girl. MM: Your dad? D: No, the dog! He is the girliest dog. He is a maltese named Quincy. I have been wanting to bring him on the road with me forever. MM: “Daya” means mercy and compassion in Hindu. Tell me about your name and its origins? D: My real name is Grace. When I was looking up translations online, I was looking for a way to separate my public and private lives. My public life is Daya, and when I go home, my friends and family still call me “Grace.” I found Daya because it is a Hindi translation, and it was perfect because my grandpa is from New Delhi, India. So there is that connection there.

Daya sits on a couch in her draped-off dressing room in the cavernous Carrie Furnace warehouse, backstage at the Thrival Innovation + Music Festival, the finale to the week-long conference. The Pittsburgh native appears relaxed and at ease after having worked the stage with sky-vaulting energy. From her humble beginnings as a high school junior, she was launched into stardom with hits like “Hide Away,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and her October album release Sit Still, Look Pretty. Maniac Magazine got to sit down with Daya and ask her about her ‘Burgh upbringing. Maniac Magazine: As a 17-year-old, you are so close to your childhood, what was the most influential part of your development? Daya: I started piano when I was really, really young, and that played a huge part. Music was always a huge part of my life. I started singing

54

at age 10 and finding as many gigs as I could around the community. After school, I would come home and go straight to my piano and just practice covers, or originals, or anything. That was safety, my go-to, and I just knew that I would do that in the future. MM: What musician influenced you the most? D: Musically, early on, it was Amy Winehouse. She had a raw talent. I feel like no one compares to it. I love the uniqueness and authenticity in her sound. I wanted to model my sound a little bit after hers while also adding in my own personal touches. MM: You must have a really supportive family. D: Yes, I credit them with a lot of what I am doing now. They were there for me from the beginning, pushing me to go to piano lessons when I didn’t want to. They were there to tell me to work hard and be passionate about what I do.

MM: What is the difference between Daya and Grace? D: Daya is a more amplified version of myself. I think I am a very honest person in general, I am very transparent. I don’t think Daya is so different than Grace but Grace is more chill. It’s weird to talk about myself with two different personalities. Grace is chill, Daya is more out there.

wear makeup for yourself and do whatever you want to do and not to worry about fitting in with the pretty girls. It’s OK to be messy and strive for what you want to do in life. MM: You had a mega hit with your collaboration with The Chainsmokers with “Don’t Let Me Down.” What was that like? D: It was amazing. It’s crazy to see how far the song has come in half a year and how much support I have gotten from everyone. I was super stoked to be collaborating with them. I think they are amazing guys and so talented. It was just a fun experience to be sharing with them. MM: They are going on in a little bit. Will you be joining them? D: I have a flight to Vegas, so I can’t go out with them. It never stops. MM: What? Tonight you are going to Vegas? D: I have a monthly residency at a nightclub. I perform at 2 am. It’s funny because I am not legally allowed to be in the club before or after my performance, so they have to escort me out really quickly. MM: Oh my god. You have to wait in the alley? D: Yep. Check out more about Daya at theofficialdaya.com. Follower her on Twitter at @Daya.

"Music was always a huge part of my life. I started singing at age 10 and finding as many gigs as I could around the community."

MM: You gave an inspiring empowerment message on stage during your set. Tell me more about that. D: That is the main theme of my new album, Sit Still, Look Pretty. I write about what I know and that is the most relevant message. Not that I have been limited as a girl, but I feel that society places you in a mold based on your gender. Girls should look pretty, wear makeup to impress guys. I think you should 55

5 BEST WINES FOR YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY PARTY BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CODY BAKER

It’s that time of season to drink and be merry, and to make these two go even better together, uncork these Collefrisio Italian blends at your next holiday gettogether.

LA CAVE BRUT This sparkling wine is made in the traditional champagne method and proves to be a crowd-favorite season after season. Well-balanced, fresh, and very persistent, this blend boasts strong, white fruity notes with hints of exotic fruit, bread crust, and toasted almonds— might go well with bruschetta!

PECORINO Silver and gold are two colors of the season, and this yellow-colored blend features festive gold reflections in addition to a long-lasting flavor. Take a sniff and note a hint of green tea and peach scents.

CONFRONTO BIANCO

instead. It contains a fruity scent, with hints of apple, banana, chamomile, and mulberry. But unlike that candied fruit creation Grandma always serves, this is one that will have everyone going back for more.

CONFRONTO That intense ruby red lipstick you’re saving for the party will match this fruity blend, which features hints of plum, berries, and marasca cherry. Slightly spicy but velvety smooth, this full-bodied wine is as steadfast as that guy wearing the mistletoe hat—only much more pleasing.

COLLEFRISIO RISERVA

There’s a good chance you’ve seen a post from Pittsburgh Beautiful at some point. With more than 65,000 fans, the Facebook page promotes the gorgeous scenery of the ‘Burgh, from bridges to stadiums to outdoor venues. “I started Pittsburgh Beautiful in 2009, just to post photos of what I thought was beautiful,” said creator Chris Klein. “Over the years, other people started noticing and posting their own pictures. Today, it’s become where proud Pittsburghers, from here and around the world, come to see and share what they think is beautiful about their city.” But it wasn’t always that way. “When I moved here in 1993, Pittsburgh had just hit bottom from the fallout in the steel industry. In 1993, it seemed no one was proud to be a Pittsburgher. Now, it has changed.”

When throwing a party, it’s common to feel like you’re forgetting something important. Well, this wine’s got you covered and includes a bouquet of aromas, including berries, blackberry, pomegranate, marasca cherry, black truffle, plus hints of spices, pepper, and cloves. Soft and velvety on the tongue, this blend has great structure.

With Pittsburgh Beautiful, Klein hopes to bring the innovation, ambition, and beauty that is Pittsburgh to the world. “We recently launched a website, which is already attracting more than 1,500 visitors a day. Hopefully, we will have more than a million followers worldwide.”

These wines are available at Market Street Grocery on 435 Market Street, right off of the square. Visit www.marketstreetgrocery.com for more information.

ICONS OF PITTSBURGH VOL. 2 BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL SCHMITT On Tuesday, October 4, the ICONS OF PITTSBURGH event took place at the Warhol Museum on the North Shore from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The party celebrated the launch of Volume Two of the visual inspiration platform. The ICONS OF PITTSBURGH storybook highlights the best of the best in Pittsburgh and these notable figures—like style strategist Bear Brandegee, Misty Lynne Cauthen of Dragonfly Pilates, and Jay Lioon of Vinoglam— were on hand to celebrate. Pittsburgh’s own Nevada Color performed a set, as cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed, and there were also photo booths and vendors like The Modern Matchmaker. It was a great time, and we already can’t wait for Volume Three! For more information on becoming an ICON OF PITTSBURGH, visit theiconsbook.com.

THRIVAL FESTIVAL BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY PISCITELLI The week-long Thrival Innovation + Music Festival culminated with two all-day concerts on Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24 at Carrie Furnaces. The Chainsmokers kicked off the first night of music, followed by performances by CHVRCHES, Sir the Baptist, Daya, and Meeting of Important People. On the second night, the lineup included Thievery Corporation, Metric, Beauty Slap, Donora, and Brooke Annibale. Thrival is an annual event that started with workshops and innovation talks (like “#Hashtag: Crossing the Lines”) over the course of the first three days, before climaxing with an end-of-the-summer music festival. Richard Engler: THE MAN WHO SOLD BOWIE TO PITTSBURGH BY L AUREN SHAFFER

Featuring local and global brands such as Rodial, Drunk Elephant, FACE atelier, Tarina Tarantino, Andrea Garland, Little Ondine, and more. 5104 Butler Street | (412) 450-0578 | info@thegildedgirl.com

Pittsburgh has had some epic concerts. Most people get excited, attend the concert, and then go home and talk about how great the acts were. But many never consider the work and business that goes on behind the curtains. Enter Richard Engler, who has made a successful career planning and promoting concerts and shows. In 1969, Engler started a company on Walnut Street in Shadyside. Initially he booked local talent, but eventually began to book small national talent, including new acts at the time like Janis Joplin, Santana, and Creedence Clearwater. As the business grew, he began to promote shows, which meant buying the artist from their agent and then selling tickets for the show. He was the first to bring David Bowie, Genesis, and Bruce Springsteen to Pittsburgh. In 1975, he bought a small, dying movie theater known then as Stanley Theater. He renamed and revived it, and today it is known as the Benedum Center. Eventually the Center would win several No. 1 theater awards from Billboard Magazine. During the time that Engler owned it, the theater featured rock and roll and rhythm and blues, among other acts. The ultimate goal was to provide entertainment for everyone. During this time, Engler also planned shows at the Civic Area and Three Rivers Stadium, some of the more famous being Rolling Stones, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Guns N’ Roses, Elton John, Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel, and the highly-attended event at Three Rivers— Bruce Springsteen, Born in the USA tour. To date, Engler has been involved in planning or promoting more than 6,000 shows. He wrote a book in 2014, Behind the Stage, and in 2016, he brought The Steve Miller Band, Styx, The Newsboys, and Boy George to Pittsburgh. In the upcoming year, he has some major shows in the works, but the promoter says, “It’s too early to release any of the information.” Whoever the promoter brings to Pittsburgh, it’ll surely be music to everyone’s ears. Drake by Rebecca Droke

MANIAC feature Hollywood got it right again, as leading ladies Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, and Haley Bennett rode the rails to rave reviews in the psychological thriller, The Girl on the Train. The Dreamworks blockbuster is based on Paula Hawkins’ hugely popular novel and is an electrifying ride full of suspense and surprise. While the plot is full of twists and turns, this cast was right on track with 2016 as a female-driven year, fullspeed ahead!

Ladies Step into the

Spotlight in Movies BY NICOLE WIDDOWSON

The saying goes, “Behind every successful man is a woman.” It’s time to change that to, “Beside every successful man is an equally successful woman.” In 2016, women have taken the lead in popular films and are changing the game in the entertainment business. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon rocked the big screen this summer, battling the supernatural and saving us all from that adorable, sugary, sinister marshmallow man in the all-female reboot of Ghostbusters. There’s no denying the girls packed a comedic punch that even Slimer couldn’t resist. Not into the supernatural? How about supervillains? No longer content to follow after her lover, the Joker, Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) went on her own adventures in Suicide Squad, using her specific wild-card skillset to take on opponents. While she doesn’t have any superpowers, she was a force to be reckoned with in 2016, delivering beatdowns while jumping or doing backflips. Sorry, Jared Leto: You can take a seat. Stealing the spotlight yet again was another female lead in a much-anticipated sequel, that of Finding Dory, the follow-up film to the 2003 Pixar hit, Finding Nemo. Its heroine may suffer short-term memory loss, but audiences won’t forget the stellar performance given by Ellen DeGeneres, as the voice of Dory. While sequels often seem as lackluster as leftover sushi, the cast in Dory was a shining light in 2016, with character voices by other strong women like Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver. Don’t take it personally, guys—just keep swimming.

It looks like movie audiences can look forward to more all-female casts soon. Production is rumored to begin on the all-ladies reboot of Ocean’s 11 titled Ocean’s 8, featuring a lineup of A-list actresses including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway. It’s not only a testament to the strength of the Ocean’s franchise, but more so to the desire for movie-lovers to see a cast of all women.

We may not have been able to say “Hello” to Adele at CONSOL Energ y Center, but Pittsburgh hosted some pretty big musical acts in 2016. Here are some of our favorites.

With so many fabulous female-featured movies to choose from, taking your girlfriends to the movies was a lot of fun in 2016. Who ya gonna call in the new year?

The Boss visited the ‘Burgh not once, but twice in one year, first on January 16 when he and the E Street Band kicked off The River tour at the CONSOL Energy Center and then again on September 11 for an additional show. For the first show, he played The River album in its entirety, and for the second one, he honored 9/11 with songs from The Rising (it was also the first concert he’s ever performed on September 11 since before 2001).

Stay tuned to Maniac Magazine at maniacmagazine.com for movie updates, interviews, and more.

BEYONCE (MAY 31) Queen Bey performed to a nearly sold-out audience at Heinz Field, her first trip back to Pittsburgh since performing with Destiny’s Child in 2005. She opened with “Formation,” and performed a mixture of her classics, like “Baby Boy” and “Crazy in Love,” and songs off of her smash Lemonade, like “Sorry” and “Hold Up.” She even paid tribute to the late Prince with a “Purple Rain” cover. Bey, don’t make it so long between visits next time.

KESHA (JUNE 11) Each year, the musical headliner of the Pittsburgh Pride in the Street festival seems to get bigger and bigger. Last year was Nick Jonas, and this year Kesha performed her hits like “Tik Tok” and “Die Young” for LGBT supporters on Liberty Avenue.

LAKE STREET DIVE (JUNE 12) June 12 was a special night in the city. It was the last night of the Pittsburgh Arts Festival, with a headlining performance by Lake Street Dive, who performed hits off their latest album Side Pony at Point State Park. And it was also the night the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup. The band even Instagrammed about the commotion on the South Side.

MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS (JUNE 14) These two took it “Downtown,” specifically at Stage AE on the North Side, for a sold-out show. Macklemore wore a Penguins jersey on stage as he performed hits like “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us.”

DRAKE AND FUTURE (AUGUST 17) Drake and Future partnered together to headline the “Summer Sixteen Tour” and made a stop at CONSOL Energy Center to perform a setlist of more than 50 songs, from “Started from the Bottom” to “Digital Dash” to, of course, “Hotline Bling.” Drake, like Macklemore, wore a Penguins jersey. So who wore it better? For more information on concerts coming to Pittsburgh, visit druskyentertainment.com. 71

Port Authority has convenient and frequent service to and from the urban areas of Pittsburgh. East Liberty is the heart of the East End’s transit service. Many Port Authority bus routes use the East Busway to bypass local traffic including the P1 and P3 from East Liberty’s busway station which offer quick rides to Downtown and Oakland. Various other routes have stops on Penn Ave. and serve just about anywhere in the East End of the city.
