Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, 2005 was a groundbreaking year for research and technology at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Your support of the successful 2004 Whatever It Takes Capital Campaign allowed us to purchase TomoTherapy and enter into an innovative academic and research partnership with Louisiana State University. These initiatives, only made possible by you, are bringing improved treatment technologies to patients, as well as new hope. To that end, we introduced erasingcancer.org, highlighting the extraordinary capabilities of image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) as delivered by TomoTherapy and Novalis. This message shares how IGRT delivers radiation more accurately and more precisely, sparing healthy tissue and targeting only the cancer – so the rest of you is left alone. With your unwavering dedication and support, the Center is able to provide to the community the best resources available to help erase this dreaded disease.

A Message from Todd D. Stevens Dear Friends, Due to your steadfast support in 2005, thousands of people across southeast Louisiana were touched by cancer-fighting programs and treatment technologies. As a friend of the Center, I want you to know firsthand what your support has meant to so many in the past year—a year Louisiana and the nation will never forget. The year 2005 saw the nation’s worst natural disaster and subsequent unprecedented health care crisis created by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Over one million residents in the paths of these hurricanes fled for their lives. Many of those were also battling cancer. Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of people turned to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for help. Because of hardworking staff and your valuable community support, the Center was able to serve as a resource to those in need. The year 2005 saw Mary Bird Perkins’ arsenal of treatment technology grow with the addition of TomoTherapy, made possible through generous community support from the successful 2004 Whatever It Takes Capital Campaign. During 2005, approximately 100 patients benefited from TomoTherapy’s extraordinary radiation delivery capabilities, allowing physicians to treat previously untreatable cancers. Offering new hope to cancer patients, TomoTherapy, just as with all technology available to the Center’s treatment team, is there for every patient in need, regardless of ability to pay. I invite you to visit erasingcancer.org to learn more about the advanced image guided radiation therapy capabilities of TomoTherapy and Novalis. Community support also made possible the Center’s innovative academic and research partnership with Louisiana State University (LSU). We are working with LSU scientists every day to develop new cancer treatments and improve patient outcomes. The medical physics program is already one of the most competitive programs in the nation and is represented by the most skilled professionals in the field. Their hard work helps the Center’s radiation oncologist partners develop and apply the best possible treatment for each patient. The LSU partnership and the combined size and expertise of the Center’s team of ten medical physicists, six medical dosimetrists and six radiation oncologists are unique to Mary Bird Perkins and cannot be found elsewhere in Louisiana. In many ways, the battle against cancer begins in the community with education and early detection. In 2005, the C.A.R.E. Network and its partners conducted over 70 free cancer screenings in 12 Louisiana parishes, serving in excess of 3,400 participants. These efforts will only grow in the future with the recent delivery of the Early Bird, the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated exclusively to comprehensive cancer screenings and patient education. This effort was made possible through generous donations you will read about in the pages ahead. The C.A.R.E. Network also conducted numerous programs to support the needs of cancer patients, planned and organized professional education programs attended by over 700 health care professionals and helped educate over 3,500 people about cancer prevention and early detection. The grassroots approach of the C.A.R.E. Network is working to save lives. Absent your generous support, these programs and services would not be possible. To the many individuals, businesses, foundations and groups that supported Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center this past year, thank you for the important role you played in the ongoing fight against cancer. We look forward to the continued partnership we have enjoyed with you as we work together to improve the health of our community for generations to come. Sincerely,

Laser beams are used to align patients on the TomoTherapy HIART System. TomoTherapy delivers radiation through hundreds of entry points, rather than just a few as in traditional radiation therapy. With TomoTherapy, radiation beams circle around a patient as they move through the opening of the device. Because of this innovation, many different cancer sites can be treated during a single radiation appointment. No other equipment available today can treat multiple sites at the same time with such delicate precision. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center 5

Medical Physics Team Works with LSU to Research Future Radiation Therapy LSU Academic Partnership Delivers Experts Needed in Cancer Care

LSU and MBPCC have developed a nationally competitive medical physics program. The joint research and academic venture promises to deliver important biomedical research, improved treatments for patients and economic development opportunities for the community. Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom (pictured), one of the world’s foremost scholars in the area of medical physics, is leading the partnership.

“The Center’s joint education and research venture with the Louisiana State University Department of Physics and Astronomy has opened up new areas of research that will help patients in Louisiana and throughout the world,” according to Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, PhD, former chair of the Department of Radiation Physics at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and now Mary Bird Perkins’ new Chief of Physics and leader of its research effort.

“To fully utilize the potential of the image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) treatment technologies at Mary Bird Perkins requires a commitment to medical physics research aimed at finding better ways to fight cancer with radiation.” Medical physics is the science behind the methods and technology used to see cancer with imaging equipment to help plan for how best to pinpoint it. Mary Bird Perkins’ expert ten-member medical physics team has access to the best equipment available, due to the Center’s nearly $25 million investment in leading-edge technology. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is one of only three facilities

you get a new piece of equipment, you simply turn it on. Not so. These are incredibly complex technologies that require expert support. The level of medical physics support at Mary Bird Perkins is unmatched, something you won’t find anywhere else in Louisiana.”

Other research in 2005 has included how best to deliver radiation treatment to shallow cancers – cancers that lay close to the surface of the skin (within 6 cm). TomoTherapy offers an alternative to other therapies available for shallow cancers and the potential to

treatment and is the first fully integrated image guided treatment system. It sees and treats by combining 3-D images and treatment to provide patients with the best possible outcome. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is one of just 20 sites in the world to serve as a TomoTherapy Center of Excellence, taking part in research studies involving this groundbreaking equipment that is capable of treating multiple areas of the body in a single integrated fashion.

In 2005, much progress has been made in LSU’s Medical Physics and Health Physics Program. The program is now one of the most nationally competitive programs in the country. “Our initial focus has been to enhance the educational process and to seed research programs, both important to our ability to improve the future practice of radiation therapy. With these goals mostly accomplished, the program will focus in 2006 on its goal of national accreditation, the next step before adding

a noninvasive manner offering patients better outcomes and improved comfort. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is the only facility in Louisiana, and one of just 36 in the country, with this highly specialized technology. The Center’s medical physics team provides the technical support the Novalis system requires.

“Our commitment to provide all patients with the best radiation treatment available drives everything we do,” said Todd Stevens, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center president and CEO. “This partnership brings together a powerful combination of resources that can make a real difference in the way cancer is ultimately treated.”

In the future, image guidance will be used to evaluate the movement of the lung or liver with respiration and trigger the radiation beam based on the movement of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center 7

35 Years of Partnership in the Fight Against Cancer ExxonMobil’s Commitment Steadfast and Inspiring

Dr. Tommy John (l), medical director for ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge operations, and the company’s Senior Public Affairs Advisor Charlie Rowton (r), see the mobile medical clinic as having a major impact on the region.

ExxonMobil began its support of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center more than three decades ago when, in 1971, Exxon Chemical Americas and Exxon Company USA helped establish the original Mary Bird Perkins Radiation Treatment Center. The company has been a partner ever since, providing philanthropic gifts during the Center’s capital and annual giving campaigns over many years. ExxonMobil’s Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) encourages employees, retirees and other eligible participants to actively contribute their time and talent to nonprofit organizations, and the company makes contributions on their behalf. While Mary Bird Perkins has been the beneficiary of VIP grants over the years, so have many other Baton Rouge area nonprofits and schools. “In 2005, ExxonMobil volunteers worked more than 46,000 hours bringing in over $745,000 to Baton Rouge area nonprofits and schools,” said Senior Public Affairs Advisor Charlie Rowton. The company’s senior management team has been generous in giving of its time to Mary Bird Perkins

as well. Ed Galante, who recently retired as senior vice president of ExxonMobil Corporation, served on Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Board of Directors from 1990 to 1992 while he was manager of the Baton Rouge refinery. Rowton has served for several years as a volunteer fund-raiser and was a member of the 2005 Annual Giving Campaign Cabinet. His capable leadership of the Industry Division helped contribute to the success of the annual campaign, the most successful in the Center’s history. “Mary Bird’s willingness to go beyond its physical building and get out into the community is one of the main reasons we feel so positive about our partnership. It is important to us to support organizations that provide needed services to the population of north Baton Rouge who we refer to as our near neighbors, those neighbors near the refinery and chemical plant,” said Rowton. He said another group of near neighbors includes the residents of Baker, Scotlandville and the Alsen-St. Irma Lee community around ExxonMobil’s north plants.

3/18/2006 11:01:55 AM

“We have four areas that we focus on that top our philanthropic priorities with services and activities important to our near neighbors leading the way. Mary Bird’s C.A.R.E. Network has partnered with us in providing cancer screenings and education at the annual Meet Your Neighbor Day in North Baton Rouge, and we’re always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for those who live near our facilities,” he explained. When a $50,000 challenge grant from The Charles M. and Mary D. Grant Foundation was received by the Center toward the purchase of a mobile medical clinic for cancer screenings, it was contingent upon the acquisition of $100,000 in additional funding for the project by the end of 2005. ExxonMobil Baton Rouge stepped forward to meet this challenge and donated $100,000 to make the mobile medical clinic a reality. Combined with previously committed funds and other community support, all necessary funding was secured. The C.A.R.E. Network accepted delivery of the mobile medical clinic in December 2005. The clinic on wheels was named the Early Bird in reference to the important message that early detection saves lives. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is now able to bring to communities the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated exclusively to comprehensive cancer screenings and patient education. Dr. Tommy John, medical director for ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge operations, sees the mobile medical clinic as having a major impact in the region. “To reach underserved populations where people are least likely to travel great distances for a screening, a mobile medical clinic designed specifically for community cancer screenings is the perfect solution.” “We are proud of our partnership with Mary Bird Perkins and its commitment to addressing important community challenges and seeing them as opportunities,” said Rowton. “We’re excited about this project and the contribution it will make to the well-being of citizens throughout southeast Louisiana.”

Early Bird Brings Early Detection to the Community Early detection saves lives. The importance of that fact cannot be overstated. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network, intent upon increasing its screening services and ultimately lowering cancer mortality rates in its service area and beyond, now has the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated to comprehensive community cancer screenings and patient education. The customized mobile medical clinic will host over 100 screenings in 2006, allowing the Center’s C.A.R.E. Network to provide free community cancer screenings across a broad region of our state, a service area that is home to one-fourth of the entire population of Louisiana and many of its poorest residents. “As long as there are individuals without access to cancer screenings due to lack of financial or facility resources, there will be a need for the mobile medical clinic,” said C.A.R.E. Network Executive Director Lori McCallum. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the community, help is on the way for those most at risk. Purchase of the Early Bird was made possible by grants from the following: ExxonMobil Baton Rouge The Charles M. and Mary D. Diligence in Early Detection Annual Screening Mammograms Save Deloris Gray’s Life

Thanks to early detection, Deloris Gray (l) is recuperating from surgery and will soon be back to cooking for her granddaughter Kennedi (r).

Gray is working on getting the strength back in her right arm so she can stir up some of the family’s favorite dishes. “When I get well, the first thing I plan to do is cook my grandbaby a steak. She likes steak. She likes food,” laughed 56-year-old Gray.

Because of a younger sister who had breast cancer, Gray began having annual mammograms at the recommended age. She never missed. But when she lost her job in 2003 after 27 years as a unit secretary at a local hospital, she also lost her health insurance.

Although concerned, Gray was grateful everyone was so vigilant in making sure she followed up on the irregularity that was found. “Even when they’re told something might be wrong, a lot of women don’t follow up and don’t go back. Thank God I did.” A digital mammogram was the recommended follow-up in 2005. “When they told me the radiologist wanted to talk to me after I was through, I knew that wasn’t good,”

Gray’s Christmas present came on December 21. The pathology report indicated that none of the resected lymph nodes contained any cancer cells. “I’m a living witness that early detection saves lives,” she stated. “Women should know that a mammogram only takes a few minutes of your time and is an investment for a lifetime. They should pay attention to advertisements offering free mammograms if they can’t afford to pay. I’m so grateful that the services of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network were there for me.”

she said. “He told me I needed a biopsy and that he saw something that made him concerned.”

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC) believes every Louisiana citizen has the right to information and services to allow them to make informed decisions and to have access to basic health care services. To address its mission, MBPCC created the C.A.R.E. Network in 2002 to plan and implement services and programs for cancer patients, health care professionals and the general public including social services, nutritional services, dental services, transportation, professional education, patient education, community education, clinical research, clinical trials, tumor registry, cancer screenings, lymphedema clinics and interactive cancer risk assessments. The C.A.R.E. Network’s premier platform is its strategic and aggressive early detection efforts. These services are made available through the generosity of the community. The C.A.R.E. Network is grateful to those physicians, allied health professionals, hospitals and agencies that have partnered to offer the many early detection and education services that were provided to the community in 2005.

Investment History

INVESTMENTS IN THE COMMUNITY Since 2000, Mary Bird Perkins has invested nearly $25 million in patient care treatment technology. During 2005, significant investments were also made in research, including over $1 million for the MBPCC-LSU academic and research partnership. Also in 2005, 12 percent of the Center’s new patients were medically indigent which resulted in the provision of unsubsidized radiation therapy care of almost $5 million. Further, over $1.3 million was returned to the community through C.A.R.E. Network programs. On the pages that follow, we gratefully recognize thousands of generous individuals and businesses that have enabled Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s mission.

Foundation Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation was chartered on January 1, 2005, to manage and oversee the successful growth of the endowment. The creation of this separate 501(c)(3) entity – a wholly owned subsidiary of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center – will help provide for the future prosperity of the Center, building long-term financial security that will help the Center continue the important work it is doing to positively impact the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones for many decades to come. An endowment “fund” was started in 1995 when the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Directors asked a group of volunteer community l e a d e r s t o bu i l d a p e r m a n e n t endowment for the Center. Over the years, through steadfast leadership and vision, the endowment has grown to present holdings of $2.6 million. The fund was transferred to the Foundation upon its establishment and is now overseen by the Foundation Board. The community’s support of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has played a major role in bringing the Center to this milestone in its history. On the pages that follow you will find a listing of Legacy Builders, those individuals who have made or informed us of their intent to make a planned gift through their estate plans. Donors who have made outright gifts of $10,000 or more to the endowment or created endowed gifts for specific MBPCC programs are also recognized as Legacy Builders.
